Comments: It was a fine and mild day up at South Belgrave that greeted the Jets for round one. Whilst overcast for much of the time, there was only an occasional breeze through the afternoon, but nothing to sway advantage toward one end or the other.
There'd been a fair bit of gossip suggesting that the Saints had recruited well over the summer. Whilst not exactly sure on the details, I thought they looked quite a bit taller across the back line than I remember them from 2008. I was interested to see how much they'd improved since their inaugural EFL season, and also how fired up the Jets would be with new coach Steve Buckle at the helm.
The game was very defensive in the first part of the opening quarter, neither side able to gain much momentum until Lukas Appleby kicked truly just on the 10 minute mark, and then again a couple of minutes later. Team mate Nick Stowe got his first major at the 16 minute mark to give the home side a three goal advantage. Jets forward pocket player Dean Thomas got his first goal a few minutes later, and Leigh Odermatt followed suit soon after. Darren Kennedy closed out the quarter with another goal to South Belgrave to give them a handy 12 point lead at the first break.
Steve Buckle urged his players on during the huddle at quarter time. The main directive was to be more composed when delivering the ball forward to try and hit targets more cleanly.
The Saints came out of the blocks strongly, with four goals in the opening 16 minutes to Nick Cox, Appleby and Kennedy. This blew the lead open to 39 points before the Jets midfielders stepped it up a notch and started exerting pressure, creating turnovers and rebounding the play back to their forward line. New ruckman Brett Enever got his first goal for the Jets at the 18 minute mark. Mick Aitken booted two in a few minutes, followed by vice captain Jono Knudsen and another to Dean Thomas at the 30 minute mark. The 39 point lead held by the Saints had been whittled down to just 10, giving the Jets supporters some confidence that the tide had turned.
Steve Buckle praised the midfielders for the lift in intensity in the second quarter, but also said that the team must reduce the number of fumbles across the board. He also reminded players to stay manned up and not to stray away into a contest too often.
The third quarter saw the Jets continue their good form. A goal to Aitken in the opening minute was followed by more very defensive play from both sides. Odermatt booted his second goal at the 18 minute mark, as did Enever a couple of minutes later. Propped on one knee with more opposition closing in rapidly following a marking contest, Enever managed to stand and quickly snap a shot from 45 metres out, no time for a run up. Nice. The defensive pressure continued. Appleby finally broke the drought for the Saints at the 24 minute mark, their first goal in over 40 minutes of play. Kevin Clark booted a goal at the 27 minute mark, giving the Jets a slender 11 point lead at the last break.
During the final huddle, the players were urged to make tackles stick, reduce the fumbles and look for options behind to drive the ball forward when under pressure.
Appleby goaled for the Saints just 45 seconds into the final quarter. Kevin Clark snapped a beauty from about 40 metres out on the boundary line five minutes later. Jono Knudsen got his second soon after that. Tom Hallinan kept the Saints in it with his first goal nine minutes in. Aitken booted another two, Appleby responded with his 6th for the match, followed by another to Odermatt and Cox to round out the match. The Jets held on to win by 14 points.
Coach Buckle was very happy with the Jets performance from the 2nd half of the 2nd quarter onwards. They came to make a statement and achieved it well.
It was truly a team effort. When the onballers lifted, the rest of the team followed suit and the confidence returned. Kevin Clark was judged best on field for the Jets. His ability to chase and tackle is great, and when under pressure from the opposition, seems to have more time than most to size up his options and still deliver the ball to a teammate. Levi Horton and Jono Knudsen assisted well around the midfield too.
Peter Ferrier did a great job in minimising the impact of Appleby for much of the game. New ruckman Brett Enever played strongly too.
Lets hope that the team can play a full four quarters at the same intensity shown in this game when they host Nunawading next week.

Comments: Our first game of the season.
Result - we had it won, drawn, final result, we lost by a point.
Whilst as a group we are very disappointed with the result, if we learn by it, it will definitely be a plus.
If we don’t then like the game itself we will have wasted our time.
The game highlighted to us all if we play the type of football we train for we can match any team this season.
Coming from three goals down twice in the match to take a 19 point lead with 7 minutes to go and then drop the game does not do justice to our work and skill rate on the day.
Our tackling in the forward half, our sometimes centre clearances and the work rate in the backline were our standouts until the last 7 minutes.
Whilst we played very good team football for 95% of the match, our more consistent players on the day were: Jack Bachelor, Anthony Bucelo, Zac Parr, Callum Petrie, Jason Hunt and Alex Young.

Comments: The Jets hosted Nunawading for their first home game of season 2010. The recent history of Nunawading FC is common knowledge to many, struggling to obtain assistance off the field and retain enough quality players to be competitive in 3rd division, they requested the EFL to allow them to drop down to 4th division for this season in order to rebuild. The decision was eventually approved with Kilsyth rising to 3rd division as part of the swap.
The Jets played the Lions twice in 2009 in 3rd division; in round two the Lions prevailed by just six points at Koonung Reserve, and in round 11, the Jets hung on to win by just seven points at home. With the Lions coming off a 122 point hiding at the hands of Glen Waverley Hawks, coach Steven Buckle warned the Jets not to be complacent as Nunawading would pull out all stops to rebound strongly.
It was a wonderfully warm and sunny day at HE Parker Reserve with an expected top temperature of 27c and a moderate northerly pushing toward the Dandenong Creek end of the ground. The Lions got off to a quick start with a goal to Jason Philactides in the opening 45 seconds. The Jets then took control with four goals in succession to Leigh Odermatt, Robby Savory, Mick Aitken and Odermatt again. Adam Meagher goaled at the 12 minute mark, Aitken got his second six minutes later. The Lions fought on and closed out the quarter with another three goals to trail by just six points at the first break. I thought Levi Horton was playing well through the middle, and Robby Savory's strong pack mark at the 23 minute mark was a highlight.
Coach Steve Buckle addressed the team during the huddle, very concerned at the complacency shown by some of his team mates. Lazy footy needed to be replaced by discipline in following the game plan, lifting the work rate and improving on the sloppy disposals so far.
The Lions took the lead in the second quarter with two opening goals at the one and nine minute marks. Similar to last week's match against South Belgrave, the Jets finally started to get the upper hand midway through the second quarter. In this case, they did it in style with eight unanswered goals in just 21 minutes of play; Aitken, Will Villani, Dave Sindrey booted one a piece before Chris Walters strayed up forward for two in a row. Levi Horton snapped truly from a tight angle in the pocket at the 28 minute mark and Odermatt followed soon after with his third. In a superb piece of play, Sam Anderson tapped from the centre bounce straight to Kevin Clark who in turn booted truly to the forward line where Jono Knudsen was able to capitalise with his first goal. Decisive, impressive, confident play by the Jets to round out the quarter.
Dave Sindrey carved up the wing with ease during the 2nd term and Sam Anderson impressed with his ruck work too. Kevin Clark and Levi Horton were really starting to dominate the centre with ease.
Steve Buckle was impressed with the improvement as he addressed the side in the rooms at half time. He reiterated that when the game plan is followed, the results do come. The intensity had lifted, but there was still improvement to be made when delivering to the forward line. It soon became apparent that Mick Aitken and new ruckman Brett Enever would not be taking the field in the second half due to injury, thus placing extra pressure on the rest of the team to battle on in the warm conditions with less opportunity for a spell on the bench.
The third quarter saw the Jets continue their fluent attack with goals to Dean Thomas, Duncan Jones, Jono Knudsen, Odermatt (x2), Savory and Steve Burns. The Lions could manage just three for the term and trailed by 73 points at the last break. It was scintillating play by the Jets, Jono, Burns and Odermatt proving too hard to handle.
Buckle addressed the huddle at the last break and asked that the team maintain the discipline and run the game out as strongly as possible. The Jets did just that with goals to Savory, Buckle (x2), Jono and Horton. Michael Britten and Rhys Harrop added the only two goals for the Lions.
It truly was a great team performance by the Jets. That said, Levi deserved best on ground honours for his efforts, setting a fine captain's example. Kevin Clark continued his great form from last week and Leigh Odermatt really dominated the half forward line. Dylan Sverns and Steve Burns contributed well across the back line, and Robby Savory returned the favour of coming straight back into the seniors with a very solid performance up forward. With 12 different goal kickers for the game, the Jets should grow in confidence to be able to mix things up and have a shot when in range, much like their style of play during 2008.
Next week sees the boys travel to Ferntree Gully, a team that have also started their season well. It will surely be a tough encounter so I urge you all to get to Ferntree Gully Reserve, Glenfern Rd, Ferntree Gully and give them your support.

Comments: What a difference a week makes!
3/4 quarter time, exactly same scenario as the week before, 10 points in front. Final quarter, get out to a three goal lead then watch opposition hit the front with 70 seconds to go.
This time the boys showed what they were really made of. The Jets fighting spirit, never say die attitude, belief in each other, shone through. Two goals within 60 seconds, final siren and at last the “ Team” song.
A great result, and a tribute to the hard work and self belief shown in each other, particularly after last week.
We still have a considerable amount of work to do regarding turnovers and our overall skills and decision making. We let teams back into the game through these errors.
However we have put one demon to rest regarding mental toughness. Now we work as a group to improve and challenge ourselves further.
On a day where every team member can hold his head very high, these players really stood out: Jason Hunt, VV, Blake, Darcy Grasby, and Golden Boot Goodey.

Comments: The Jets traveled to Ferntree Gully last Saturday to take on the in form Eagles, second on the ladder and also undefeated. The previous visit to this ground in round four 2008 saw the Jets hang on to win by just four points. The story was different when the Jets hosted in round 13 that year, running home comfortable 90 point winners.
The Eagles had apparently recruited well recently, and with a new coach in place were looking strong in their early victories over Canterbury and South Belgrave. The Jets meanwhile went into this game without the likes of Mick Aitken, Jono Knudsen and new ruckman Brett Enever due to injuries. Into the side came two colts players in Jack Batchelor and Lachlan Goodey having their first crack at senior footy, and Justin Fry. Given the somewhat slow starts in rounds one and two, a good start would be necessary if the Jets were to contain the Eagles on their home turf.
Unfortunately, that turned out not to be the case. Following heavy rain earlier in the day, conditions were fine by the time the seniors match started, although a gusty northerly caused some havoc as it blew diagonally across the ground. Ben Morris opened the scoring up for the Eagles with a goal just one minute in. Dave Sindrey responded soon after for the Jets. When playing coach Steve Buckle injured his knee at the 12 minute mark, things were starting to look a little grim. The Eagles booted five goals unanswered to finish out the term and set up a 33 point lead.
During the huddle, Bucks asked the players to lift their work rate, stick to their zoning structures and communicate better.
The Eagles came out and totally dominated the second quarter. Aside from a nice goal to Steve Burns from the pocket boundary line against a stiff breeze at the 14 minute mark, there was little to cheer about. Morris was running amok in the Eagles forward line, booting six goals for the term, including four in a row in just eight minutes at one stage. There was little the Jets could do to quell the Eagles delivery to their forward line. With eight goals for the term, the home side set up a commanding 82 point lead at the major break.
The coaches were dismayed with the poor performance of the Jets as they addressed them in the rooms at half time. There was a general lack of discipline and work rate resulting in too many turnovers, and the lack of determination when leading for teammates was worrying. The two debutantes in Batchelor and Goodey seemed to be the only one's prepared to put their head over the ball.
Eagles captain Daniel De Ieso got the first major of the third quarter three minutes in. Dave Sindrey kicked his second for the game some five minutes later. Leigh Odermatt's goal at the ten minute mark was a rare highlight. Kicked low straight towards an opponent from about 25 - 30 metres out, it bounced suddenly upward and over said opponent through the big sticks. I doubt this is something that could be replicated through practice, it was just one of those things that happens with an oval ball. Many times, the bounce just goes wrong, this time, oh so right. Thereafter though, the Eagles resumed control and slammed home six more goals for the term, further extending their lead to 112 points.
As is usual when a team is on a hiding to nothing, the final address to the huddle was about trying to salvage something from the game, showing some pride to each other and the supporters.
The fourth quarter saw Levi Horton bag a goal one minute in, and Dylan Sverns managed a couple later in the quarter. The Eagles continued on their merry way with a further six goals. Morris ended with twelve for the match, an outstanding effort given the swirly conditions. Even if the Jets had a full list to pick from, I'm not sure who could have held him for long. The Eagles won comfortably by 128 points.
There were a few solid performances for the Jets from the likes of Chris Walters, Ali Knudsen, Jack Batchelor who tried hard all day and impressed me with his pace, Lachlan Goodey who put his body on the line time and again, Chris Paver, Sam Anderson and Kevin Clark.
Injuries are a fact of life for any footy club and I take nothing away from the Eagles victory due to the struggles the Jets had in that department. They gave the Jets a reality check on how committed they need to be to dominate in fourth division this year. The Jets must lift their intensity both at training and on game day if they are to improve on this dismal outing. I certainly hope they can do that when they take on Surrey Park this coming Saturday.

Comments: We traveled to Ferntree Gully record 1 win/ 1 narrow loss. Result as from the score a huge defeat.
We played a very well drilled and disciplined football side. From our part we were never in the contest. Once again we got off to a poor start and then the wheels fell off. We deserted our game plan and played for ourselves.
After half time we applied some pressure which resulted in good passages of football. However, it was most disappointing some players took it upon themselves to play where they wanted to. Hence, when we won the ball and moved forward they were nowhere to be seen, out of position chasing kicks.
It is very disappointing for players to work hard, win the football then to find when they kick or look up to pass the ball, their teammate required to be in that position has disappeared. We only had to look at our opponents to see what team play and playing to a game plan can achieve.
As I see it we certainly have the football talent. We proved that in passages of play through this game. It now depends on whether we have the heart and desire to work as hard as our opponents on the training track to achieve the results all of us know can be there.
Our more consistent players on the day:
VV, Anthony, Jordie, Nick Jeff’s

Comments: The Jets hosted the Panthers for the first time since 2008 last Saturday. Whilst it would be fair to say that Surrey have struggled in recent years - they last played finals in 2006 and finished bottom last year, they did show up a complacent Jets unit in 2007, beating us by 54 points in Round 12. The two meetings in 2008 were a different story with the Jets winning by 133 and 220 points respectively. Given the Jets poor showing from last week, it would be interesting to see if they could bounce back or if complacency would be costly once again.
It was a fine, sunny afternoon with a moderately gusty wind blowing in from the north, favouring the creek end of the ground. The Panthers kicked with the breeze in the first term. Kevin Clark opened the scoring for the Jets two minutes in with his first goal. Jon Vanderwiel responded soon after to get the Panthers on the board. Brett Enever, back from a two week rest due to injury, booted truly at the seven minute mark. Dean Thomas followed suit some five minutes later. The rest of the quarter was a scrappy affair with neither side really dominating one way or the other. When Gareth Woodcock hurt his achilles and collapsed at the 18 minute mark, Danny Pullen swooped in for an easy goal from the pocket.
With Gareth sidelined, the Jets were down one man on the bench. Coach Steve Buckle, himself sidelined due to a serious knee injury from last week, addressed the players in the huddle at the first break. He urged the players to get their head over the ball, and to reduce the number of fumbles. He also reminded the defenders not to let the Panther forwards get goal side of them. On the positive side, he said that the Jets forwards were presenting well.
The second quarter saw the Jets dominate, holding the Panthers to just 0.1 whilst booting 7.5 themselves. The goals in this quarter came from Levi Horton, Enever (x2), Leigh Odermatt (x2) Brad Greaves (playing his first senior match this year) and Clark. Kev's goal was particularly impressive as it was a snap from about 50m out on his third possession in that one brief bit of play. His run and determination paid off handsomely.
The coaches were far more content at the half time break, asking for more of the same and praising the forwards for their increased pressure during the second quarter.
The third quarter saw the Panthers lift and the Jets drop away. Ewan Jon goaled for the Panthers at the two minute mark and Pullen followed up with his second major five minutes later. The Jets really struggled into the wind, kicking 2.5 for the term, Enever and Clark kicking the only goals at 23 and 25 minute marks. It was very scrappy footy.
Bucks was critical of the team's efforts in the third quarter, calling it dumb footy. The forwards weren't leading well enough and tackles weren't sticking like they should. He urged the team to make a stand and finish the game off strongly.
The Jets responded brilliantly with an 8.1 to 0.1 last term. Clark snapped truly from a tight angle in the pocket just two minutes in. Enever got his fifth major ten minutes in. This was followed with more goals to Horton (x2), Odermatt (x2), Robby Savory and Clark again.
The coach was well pleased with the end result and the way the boys responded in the fourth quarter. The back line stood up well with Will Villani, Jaime Villani and Brent Furniss providing plenty of run. Sam Barling contributed strongly in his first senior game for the Jets. Peter Ferrier dominated when switched onto the ball and Enever's return was welcome, playing up forward for the most part.
Chris Walters, Clark, Chris Paver, Steve Burns, Odermatt, Horton and Dylan Sverns also played well. In fact, it was hard to pick a dud player on the day.
The Jets eventually ran out winners by 102 points. It could have been more if not for the third quarter lapse. I hope that they can be switched on for four quarters when they travel to Canterbury for the first time next Saturday.

Comments: We had a couple of questions hanging over our head from our first three games and our response in this game would indicate where we stood in this competition.
We were coming off a heavy defeat from FTG with the character and team ethic in question. We also had faded badly in our first two games with the question being asked, could we put teams away after gaining the lead?
With one win and two losses and playing a side with similar results, this was an eight point game for us.
Result: 60 point plus win from a very, very good team effort.
We have now set ourselves a new standard in relation to team work and pressure football. The question we now have to answer is can we be consistent and string wins together in this fashion?
As I have indicated it was a team effort, but I would like to mention Dyson, our captain Sam, Anthony and Darcy Grasby for really setting the standard for the day and hopefully the rest of the season.
We won’t mention Golden Boot!, however special praise to James Taylor who played very well but also was on the receiving end of a very ordinary incident in which the tribunal will have the final say.
His self control, and desire not to take the focus away from the team playing football should not be lost on anyone at Heathmont let alone our opposition.
Well done James.
- Ian Jones
More Comments: With the cold weather finally upon us, the 18s for the first time literally kicked the dew off in search of a second win for the win over new found rivals South Belgrave.
After coming of a big loss to Ferntree Gully and going down by a point to the saints in round one, redemption was the key word, we got it served with a nice side salad of a 12 goal win.
In the first term we kicked with the wind, only able to manage 2.3 for the quarter from a mountain of opportunities inside forward 50. The second quarter proved much the same as we kicked 2.5 to end up 4.8 for the half and keeping South Belgrave in the game with our inaccuracy.
In the rooms it became clear to every player that this was the one that the boys would not let slip, that it would take a four quarter performance from every player to get over the line.
Coming out of the main break we were challenged early, credit to our boys to stick it out and pile on four goals to one in the third term and open up the game.
The last quarter was a brilliant effort was our boys putting salt all over the wound and kicking 9.8 for the quarter. South Belgrave became quite undisciplined but praise to the Heathmont boys as they went about beating the Saints where it hurt, on the scoreboard.
A great effort by the boys and a well deserved win: Heathmont 17.17.119 to South Belgrave 8.7.55 a 64 point win.
A brilliant effort from every player on the ground to really show that we are a very classy side when we play as one unit. Its starting to show now that we are a quality side and hopefully in future weeks we can hold down the fort once again 2-0 at home and looking to hold strong at the hanger for the rest of the year.
Goal kickers: Lachy “ Golden boot” Goodey 9 , Jesse “Godra” Francis 2, J. Batchelor 2, D. Grasby, James “ I can’t find my tooth” Taylor, J. Morrison-Story, J. Matcott, J. Giraud

Comments: The Jets traveled to Canterbury Reserve to take on the Cobras for the first time since their entry to the EFL competition in 2009. The home side were an unknown quantity in the Jets eyes, although would have gone into the match with some confidence following their 12 point win over the Eastern Lions in round four. The Jets meanwhile had had a good week on the training track following their 102 point win against Surrey Park. Hopefully the Jets would come out firing from the beginning and come home with a win. That turned out not to be...
It was a fine and sunny day with barely a breeze about at Canterbury Reserve, perfect footy weather. For those that haven't seen it before, the ground is somewhat narrower and shorter than HE Parker, although I figure it to be bigger than Koonung Reserve where Nunawading play. Aside from a muddy centre square (apparently not helped by the grass cricket pitches in place during the summer), the ground seemed to be in fine nick.
The first quarter started off in a scrappy manner. The Cobras were having a dip, but their inaccuracy was costing them. It wasn't until the 12 minute mark that Andrew Baker slotted their first major. The Jets were struggling to get the ball past the half forward line, the result being that Leigh Odermatt kicked their only goal at the 17 minute mark. James Sanford responded soon after for the Cobras and they took a 10 point lead into the first break. With seven behinds kicked for the term by the Cobras, it could have been substantially higher.
Coach Steve Buckle urged his players to lift when addressing them during the huddle. Things to improve on were more leads form the forwards, getting tackles to stick, improve disposals and increase the work rate generally.
The second quarter saw more of the scrappy play evident in the first term. Brent Isles goaled for Canterbury nine minutes in. Duncan Jones responded soon after. There were further goals to Scott Burson and Isles for Canterbury before the Jets had a purple patch of three goals in as many minutes late in the term, coming from Kevin Clark, Dean Thomas and Jono Knudsen. Baker closed out the half with a final goal to the Cobras at the 28 minute mark to give them a six point lead at the major break.
Bucks gave the Jets players a real spray in the rooms at half time with only Dylan Sverns, Kevin Clark and Jono being spared for playing pretty well so far. Complacency was costing the Jets the game. No zoning up, lack of intensity and lack of respect for opponents were some issues highlighted by Bucks.
Isles and Baker goaled in the early minutes of the third term for the Cobras before Peter Ferrier and Odermatt responded in kind for the Jets. John Tsetsenekos kicked truly for Canterbury at the 10 minute mark followed by Dean Thomas with his second for the game. Further goals to Baker and Isles rounded out the quarter and gave the home side a handy 19 point lead at the last change.
Bucks stressed that this was the Jets season on the line. Failure to respond here could be very damaging indeed. He asked them to lift once more, use the centre corridor and show 'em the best that the Jets could deliver.
With just three goals in the final term, one to Robby Savory and another to both Isles and Baker, that wasn't be. It was a scrappy ending to a very ordinary game for the Jets.
There were some solid performances from the Jets on the day. Dylan Sverns was fantastic at full back, stopping many scoring attempts from the Cobras. Brent Furniss once again held his spot across half back and Kevin Clark ran the game out well. Peter Ferrier and Chris Walters deserve a mention, as does Leigh Odermatt who in my opinion presented well up forward, particularly from the second quarter onwards.
Full credit must go to Canterbury. They played out the game well and at least looked interested in winning it. That sense of self belief will see them win some more games this season for sure.
The Jets on the other hand, were far from switched on. Why, I do not know. I only hope they show some more pride in their game next week when they travel to Capital Reserve to take on the unbeaten Glen Waverley Hawks. It will be a formidable task to beat them, but with a change in attitude and some self belief, nothing is impossible.
Good luck!

Comments: What a difference a month can make...
We headed out to Fairpark Reserve? Batterham Reserve? In the end it was Fairpark Reserve to take on Eastern Lions with an away record which could be compared to that of Richmond.
We headed out onto the ground with the clear intent of making a statement to not only the Lions but to the competition and show that the Heathmont 18s, both home and away were a force to be feared.
The boys got off to a good start, holding the lions to the one late goal in the last few seconds of the quarter. We were moving the ball well and looked smooth when we used the corridor to advantage, our pressure was a catalyst for turnovers that Eastern made and we made them pay kicking the first four goals of the game to open up a 20 point lead by quarter time.
If we had an intention, the second quarter made it clearly evident seven goals to two, with accuracy not troubling us. The boys were looking smooth, playing with not only class but the intent to get in and under. A minor slip on the last line (by myself) and the Lions ended up with two for the term. A commanding second term and solid work for the half - job not done yet.
At half time we spoke about making this statement to the competition, to come out and put the game to rest early in the second half. The basis of those was echoed by every player as we ran out, unfortunately we couldn't do so and Eastern controlled the 3rd term to out score us by seven points, a figure that did not sit well with players and especially the coach. Jonesy put it on the boys to finish the game out strongly.
The last quarter saw a flow of goals, our boys managing to slot though ten majors to the Lions three. A grand finish after a dismal third term, in the end an 87 point win, and another clear demonstration of our development as a side.

Comments: The Jets traveled to Capital Reserve to take on the unbeaten Glen Waverley Hawks last Saturday. The Hawks have gone from strength to strength in recent years. From breaking a 50 game losing streak in round 16 2007 against Surrey Park, they made the preliminary final in 2008 when the Jets defeated them by 21 points, and the qualifying final in 2009 when they were bundled out by the Basin. Having started strongly in 2010, the Hawks on their home paddock were always going to be a tough challenge, especially given the Jets inconsistencies so far.
It was a fine and cool day once again, perfect for footy. As the opening term got underway, I hoped the Jets would come out switched on and raring to go. That wasn't to be unfortunately as the Hawks set about dominating the game from the start. Early goals to Josh Gray and Matt Carnelly got them on the board before Peter Ferrier responded for the Jets at the eight minute mark. The Hawks were disciplined, running in packs and driving the ball forward relentlessly as they slammed home another eight goals for the term. Carnelly finished with four for the term, Simon Grasser and Matthew Smith two each, and singles to Gray and Rob Davies.
Coach Steve Buckle addressed the team at the quarter time huddle, requesting the players to play man on man and for the defenders not to get caught out on the wrong side of their opponents. He also asked them to try and create some run and remain positive.
The second quarter was more of the same though, with the Hawks extending their 58 point lead at the first break to 101 points at half time. Grasser and Carnelly continued the onslaught with two goals each, and singles to Davies, Brad Riddle and Darren Dewar. The Jets were failing to man up and utilise their pace against what is quite a tall Hawks squad. Poor delivery to the forward line via long bombs was not helping either.
The Jets definitely came out looking to salvage some pride in the third quarter. By beginning to man up and apply some pressure (20 tackles for the term compared to 26 in the first half), they were able to stifle the run of the Hawks and actually be competitive. Following an early goal to Kevin Clark just two minutes in, it took a further nine minutes for Carnelly and Matthew Fraser to respond in kind. Ferrier popped through his second goal for the game at the 17 minute mark, Carnelly booted his eighth soon after. Andy Davidson in his first senior game for the Jets as replacement for the injured Dean Thomas, goaled at the 23 minute mark. Carnelly got another two and Davies another one for the Hawks, before a late goal to Leigh Odermatt.
Bucks was pleased with the team's endeavour in that third quarter and asked them to run out the game strongly with an even better work rate and more tackling pressure.
The boys continued where they left off in the third term. The scoring was subdued compared to earlier in the game with a goal each to Clark and Davidson for the Jets countered by one each to Wayne Magee, Andrew Azzopardi and Carnelly for the Hawks.
Coach Buckle was proud of the team's second half as they had improved in manning up and following the Jets game plan.
Whilst the end result of a 122 point loss was ultimately very disappointing, I came away from the game more pleased than I had last week from the loss to Canterbury. I expected the Hawks game to be tough, but the way the Jets actually applied themselves in the second half against a top side showed some real potential. Maybe, just maybe, this will instill a bit of self belief back in the side. At the very least, it should remind them of the effort needed if they are to be competitive and make the finals later in the year.
Luke Broadbent was a pretty obvious choice for best on ground for the Jets. His ability to drive the ball forward and create opportunities was sensational. Sam Barling copped one on the chin, literally, but ended up nullifying his opponent in a strong performance. Peter Ferrier, Leigh Odermatt, Chris Paver, Chris Walters and Kevin Clark continued their solid form also.
I firmly believe that the Jets have enough depth in the squad to cover key injury absences such as Mick Aitken, Dean Thomas, Ali Knudsen and coach Steve Buckle. They just need to be mentally switched on for a full four quarter effort and apply themselves like they did in that second half and the confidence will return. I hope they can do that in this coming Saturday's match against Forest Hill at home. Good luck lads.

Comments: After an extremely positive fortnight, the under 18's took on the winless Glen Waverley Hawks, a side on the bottom of the ladder but not a bottom of the ladder side.
The Hawks came out hard as we thought they would, and from the outset really put us on the back foot.
A tough first term, we found ourselves a goal down early after a quite poor performance.
In the second term, we came out didn't play with the toughness and the determination that had brought on our success in the past two weeks. The Hawks managed six goals to three in the second term and went into half time with a four goal lead.
We weren't playing as a team, blazing away to no avail, our forwards were well held and we were stuck trying to find other avenues to goal. At half time we put it to each other to actually take the half time talk out onto the ground.
We did just that, kicking seven goals to two and playing some very good football, linking up through the middle of the ground and working for goals. We looked like a completely different side, something had clicked and we lifted our heads and it became infectious. With the crowd now behind us we skipped to a seven point lead.
At three quarter time we wanted to keep out emotions in check, we settled from our high and unfortunately that went out onto the ground in the last term, the Hawks kicked eight goals in the last to our one, and showed to us that they weren't a bottom side and very competitive on their day.
We were a better side but not on the day, we needed to play four quarters to make sure that we got over the line.
We have a big game this week, Forest Hill back on our home paddock and a chance to make it three - zero at home and show to the competition we are a force this year.

Comments: Heathmont hosted Forest Hill for the first time since round 15 2008, at a time when the Jets were on a 13 game winning streak. Lee Odermatt was one of 11 goal kickers that day, and with four majors to his name was declared best on ground as the Jets made it 14 in a row with a 76 point thumping.
Much has changed since then of course, and not just for the Jets. Forest Hill secured the services of Stuart Wynd as playing coach and Adam Slater for a bit of extra experience in 2010. The Jets brought back many games worth of experience themselves for this match, with the likes of Steve Shore & Travis Ling in for their first senior games in quite a while, and Mick Aitken and Peter Forsyth returning from lengthy injuries.
With fine conditions and a chilly, moderate southerly blowing up from the creek end, the game was underway. There was plenty of pressure applied from both sides. Levi Horton snagged the first goal of the game seven minutes in. Daniel Adams responded five minutes later for the Zebras, and followed up with his second just a few minutes later. Leigh Odermatt snapped truly from a tight angle in the pocket in front of the cricket nets at the 15 minute mark to draw the teams level. The rest of the quarter was one of great defensive pressure and the few scoring shots sailed through for behinds only.
Coach Steve Buckle was pleased with the Jets efforts in the first term during his huddle speech. He urged them continue the good work, and utilise their pace through the centre corridor whenever possible.
The second term saw the Jets kicking up the hill with the breeze. Mick Aitken got his first major just two minutes in. Adams responded in kind with his third for the game seven minutes later. Jono Knudsen sprinted through the middle into centre half forward to kick a goal at the 12 minute mark. Jarrod Hills and Adam Slater got one each for the Zebras before the quarter wrapped up much like the first, more behinds.
The Jets trailed slightly at the major break as Bucks addressed the team in the rooms. Whilst generally pleased with the first half, all agreed that the tempo could go up a notch or two if the Jets really applied themselves. He praised Odermatt, Horton and Chris Walters for their strong leads, and Dave Sindrey for his pace along the wing. He also asked that there be more talk amongst the players as lack of it had cost a couple of goals so far.
Aitken got the Jets off to a good start with his second goal three minutes into the third quarter. Wynd and Slater replied for the Zebras soon after. Chris Walters goaled at the 13 minute mark, and then Forest Hill really took the game on with four in a row in reply; Slater booted three of them and Wynd the other. When Aitken goaled after the siren, it brought the Zebras lead back to 23 points.
In his address to the players at the last break, Bucks asked the midfielders to lift and for everyone to play on wherever possible, thus taking advantage of the team's pace.
An opening minute goal to Hayden Sekula upped the ante again for the Zebras. When Slater bagged his sixth, nine minutes in, the Jets were staring at a six goal deficit with roughly 20 minutes left to play. It looked all over bar the shouting, but the Jets were having none of that. Sindrey accepted a centre clearance following Slater's last goal and tore through the middle to respond in kind some 40 seconds later. Levi Horton responded well and kicked the next two, before Duncan Jones kicked truly around the 23 minute mark. When Aitken kicked a behind, followed by another goal, the Jets trailed by just one point.
The siren blew to end the match soon after. An unusual quietness was evident as both teams patiently waited for the goal umpires to confirm the score. When they waved flags to indicate that the scoreboard was indeed correct, the Jets players were clearly disappointed. To have gotten so close and fall short by the narrowest of margins was devastating.
Following the game, Bucks addressed the team back in the rooms. He likened the defeat to a finals loss, that's how tough it felt. He praised the team for their fight back in the final term, suggesting that they were simply unstoppable when they exploited their pace and ran the ball so well. Once again though, a lapse during the game, this time in the third term, cost the Jets the match.
There were many consistent players for the Jets on the day. Pete Forsyth and Steve Shore may have mentioned they were a bit underdone on fitness, but you'd never know it to see them defend so well. Leigh Odermatt provided many great leads, not just across half forward, but also pushing further back when the need arose. Kevin Clark continued his good form, and Levi really lifted in that last quarter to lead by example. Dave Sindrey and Steve Burns also impressed with their strong running and delivery of the ball. Jono Knudsen played well in his 100th game for the club, but like most, would have preferred a few extra minutes to finish it off with a win.
Congratulations to the Zebras on the win. The Jets now have a week off before hosting arch rivals the Basin. Hopefully they can go one better and get their season back on track with a victory.

Comments: The Jets hosted the Basin last Saturday in front of a decent sized crowd, thanks in part to the extras on hand for the Past Players and Officials luncheon, and the loyal supporters from the Basin. The last time these two teams met was in round 12 2008 when the Jets triumphed by 82 points at Batterham Reserve. Earlier that season, the Jets won by a lesser margin of just 28 points at home in round three.
It was an overcast day with a mild south westerly blowing up from the Dandenong creek end of the ground. Earlier sun had disappeared, drizzle set in around during the first quarter, and steady rain fell throughout the second half.
The reserves had held on for a nice 31 point victory and headed into the rooms to sing the club song. Seniors coach Steve Buckle called his squad back into the rooms following their regular warm up on the top oval. The seniors were joined by the reserves as Bucks urged his team to come out firing and play hard. I won't attempt to paraphrase it too much more than that, but it was motivational in my mind and I hoped it would have the players pumped up, ready to go.
Unfortunately that wasn't to be the case as the Jets struggled to gain any advantage over the Bears. With just two goals for the term to Mick Aitken (9 min mark) and Luke Broadbent (27 min mark) the Jets weren't able to keep up with the Bears as they slammed home six majors for the quarter. Brent Reiner did the most damage with three goals; singles came from Daniel Den Braber, Shane Hamilton and Max Kruger, the latter right on the siren to end the first quarter.
Bucks addressed the lads in the huddle, praising Jono Knudsen for his efforts so far. He asked the players to get their heads over the ball better, play low and drive the ball forward at all costs. Over use of handball in the wet conditions was proving costly at times.
The second quarter started slowly, neither side scoring a goal until David Taylor slotted one through at the 12 minute mark for the Basin. Reiner and Josh Lee followed suit before David Sindrey kicked truly for the Jets at the 24 minute mark. Lee closed out the quarter with another one for the Bears to give them a very handy 49 point lead.
The mood in the rooms during the half time break was somewhat bleak, contrasting greatly from before the game. The leaders amongst the team did their best to talk up the Jets chances. Coach Buckle said that the boys were not manning up or leading to the ball well enough, and that they must watch opponent Todd Power carefully and try to minimise his impact on the game. He also asked that they play smarter wet weather footy, driving the ball forward quickly at all costs. A representative from the past players suggested to Bucks that he bring the payers out onto the field via the main club room in order to spur them on. Despite the best wishes from the past players in attendance as the players ran past, the Jets failed to fire.
As the rain set in, at times very heavily, the scoring opportunities were diminished in the second half. The Jets only added two behinds for the third term whilst Brent Dower and Stephen Tibb snagged a goal each for the Bears, extending their lead out to 64 points at the last break. To the Jets credit, they had managed to defend better during this term, with the midfielders getting on top to restrict the opposition forays into their forward zone.
Bucks asked that they keep up and even increase the pressure from the third term for the final one.
The Jets did their best, matching the Bears with one goal a piece; Jono Knudsen slotted through his at the two minute mark, Andrew Battye for the Bears at the 16 minute mark. Both teams looked happy to hear the final siren, just so they could retreat to the rooms and escape the cold and wet conditions on field.
Luke Broadbent played well all day, setting an example to teammates, as did Jono Knudsen. Travis Ling provided a some drive drive through the middle and Dave Sindrey did his best along the wings. Robby Savory, Jake Sherriff and Leigh Odermatt all had solid games too.
The Jets were second to the footy for most of the game. Their lack of discipline in following the game plan laid out by the coaches is costing them dearly far too often. They need a bit more conviction in how they approach the game, perhaps a bit of aggro too. Morale seems to be down, only adding to the problems.
I hope that the coaches and players alike can get the team united to the cause soon so that season 2010 can be rescued. It's too early to rule us out of finals contention, but sitting in eighth position and two and half games shy of fifth is certainly making it hard with only eight games to go. The loyal Jets supporters will be there to cheer you on every step of the way, starting with Nunawading in a couple of weeks.
It's over to you boys!

Comments: Round nine for the under 18's and another hard task with the boys facing The Basin for the first time this season. Both sides had been up and down in form over recent weeks, especially ourselves, after a positive start to the year the losses to the Glen Waverley Hawks and Forest Hill had put us back with the pack.
Our first half showed true guts and we came into the rooms trailing by five points, with only simple errors costing us the lead and handing The Basin the upper hand. At half time we spoke about playing four quarters and running out the game to take the four points.
This week proved again to be a hard task as we came out of the break and booted the first three goals to hit a nice 12 point lead mid way through the term. But for us that was all she wrote, the Bears kicked the next seven of the term and went into the final break with a five goal lead.
The final term was once again not our best, we ran out of legs and couldn't give anymore against a Basin attack that kicked nine goals to one in the final term against us.
Over the last three weeks we have played solid football for a half (second against Glen Waverley, and the first half against Forest Hill and The Basin). It's a big test in two weeks time up against a side that beat us by ten goals but are not a ten goal better side. It's up to every player to put it to themselves to play out four quarters and we can still make a push for the top and a late surge for the double chance.
Better Players: Anthony Bucello, Nick Jeffs, Batchy.

Comments: The Jets traveled to Koonung Reserve to take on the Lions last Saturday. Due to new turf being laid on their usual top oval this season, the game was played on their slightly larger (although still very small) bottom ground. The sides last met in round two when the Jets won comfortably by 92 points at home. Our form since then has resulted in only one win over Surrey Park so I was keen to see if the Jets would adapt to the different conditions and rebound at last for their first win in seven weeks.
The Jets coaching panel had made numerous changes for the game, bringing in two debutantes in Kieran O'Driscoll and Nick Seller, and bringing back Jaime Campbell and David Want for their first senior games this year. Weather wise, there was patchy cloud and a moderate north westerly blowing in from one of the pockets, partly favouring the clubroom end of the ground.
The early part of the first quarter was a bit of a struggle for both sides with lots of rebound out of defence. Jason Eversteyn kicked the first major of the game for the Lions five minutes in. The Jets kicking into the forward line was a bit wayward early on. David Sindrey got the first major on the board for the Jets at the nine minute mark. Kevin Clark followed suit a few minutes later. Ben Tomazic kicked truly for the Lions at the 17 minute mark to even things up before the Jets picked up the pace and pressure. Strong marks to Leigh Odermatt saw him kick two quick consecutive goals. Steve Burns and Levi Horton snagged a goal each to end the quarter with the Jets holding a handy 25 point lead.
Coach Steve Buckle was very pleased with the way the boys had started, suggesting it was the best quarter of footy from them for the year. The physical pressure from tackles, bumps (Travis Ling delivered a ripper of a hip and shoulder, completely legitimate) and smothers was a joy to watch. Combine that with the right mix of handball, run and kick, it was fantastic. Bucks just asked them to keep it going.
Jono Knudsen opened the second term with a goal just two minutes in. Mark Wilson replied for the Lions six minutes later. Thereafter, the Jets got on a roll with further goals to Odermatt, Knudsen, Dylan Sverns, Burns and debutante Nick Seller (the boy knows how to celebrate a goal). Tomazic replied for the Lions, followed by Luke Broadbent for the Jets to round out the quarter. One of the highlights of the quarter for me was the marvelous chase along the wing by Kieran O'Driscoll, followed up with a perfect tackle from behind on his opponent. Such determination was awesome to see.
Bucks was all smiles as he addressed the team in the rooms at the major break. He did warn the players not to get too cocky, despite the 58 point lead they enjoyed. He was pleased with the way they were linking up on the run and asked them to maintain the intensity during the next quarter.
The intensity did dwindle slightly in the the third quarter as the Lions did their best to rebound. Goals were hard to come by due to the swirly conditions. Clark booted his second for the game some 10 minutes into the quarter. Adam Meagher and Joshua Williams kicked a goal each for the Lions, followed by one each to Odermatt, Burns and Chris Walters to finish the term.
The final huddle had Bucks asking for the Jets to run out the last quarter and boot eight goals if possible. They would go one better than that...
Jason Philactides got the Lions on the board at the three minute mark. Jono kicked an absolute ripper a minute later for the Jets when he leapt and snapped one from up high, some ten meters out on an angle as the ball was racing toward the line with numerous players in tow. Seller popped up with two quick goals (one was a beauty from tight in the pocket) before Meagher dobbed his second for the Lions at the 13 minute mark. Thereafter, it was one way traffic as the Jets went on a rampage. Goals came from Sindrey, Horton (x2) Clark, Horton (again!) and Peter Ferrier.
The final onslaught saw the Jets run out winners by 124 points. With 51 scoring shots including 25 behinds, I wonder how things may have been if they were more accurate. Despite the huge margin, one of the best statistics was the spread off goal kickers, half the team kicked one or more, easily making up for the absence of Mick Aitken. Steve Buckle was rapt at the end of the game and let the boys know just how pleased he was when addressing them back in the rooms.
This was the most consistent effort I've seen from the Jets this year, a full four quarter effort. There were no passengers at all. It's almost unfair to single blokes out for attention when the whole side played so well, but I'll do it anyway. Dave Want was sensational - I lost count of the number of smothers and tackles he laid. Knudsen, Levi and Sindrey lead by example all day. Steve Shore played his best game since his return to the Jets a few weeks back. Odermatt was in fine form too, I didn't see him drop a mark all day and a fair number of them were contested heavily. Jake Sherriff and Jaime Campbell played well across the backline too.
Whilst the high winning margin is important in the scheme of things as the Jets try to claw their way back up the ladder into finals contention, the way they played this game out was more important. Having the whole side working as one should boost their confidence and morale. I hope it carries into the next game when they host South Belgrave.
Well done lads!

Comments: Another game at home for the under 18's and another chance to tick off another win up against one of the form sides in Forest Hill. Having played them once before, we knew what we were in for. In the first encounter the boys managed to stay with the Zebras up until half time before their class proved too much for our boys and they ran out comprehensive winners.
After not winning a game for the last month the boys found it hard from the outset, skills and chances in front of goal were not up to standard and it showed on the scoreboard as we kicked 1.5 to 5.2 and trailed from the start. The second quarter proved much of the same with the Zebras putting on eight more goals to extend the lead further.
After half time, we spoke about earning back some pride and some respect. We showed a lot more fight in the third term but still managed again to let through eight goals. The boys were applying the pressure but the class of Forest Hill made us look really second rate.
A disappointing last term and what was one of our worst of the year, only letting though another eight but the intent was not there and there was no pressure on Forest Hill's disposals.
In the end it was a loss that we saw coming, but not by that much. Over the next two weeks we have two chances to once again get back on the winners list but can't take either opponent lightly.
Finals are the key, once we make that final five anything can happen.

Comments: The Jets hosted the Saints on Saturday, hoping to continue on with their good form from last week, and come out on top as they did in round one up at South Belgrave Reserve. That game saw them recover from a slow start to pull ahead and hold on for a 14 point win, with Mick Aitken booting five goals for the Jets.
Since round three, the Saints have gone from strength to strength. Following a loss to ladder leaders Ferntree Gully in round two, they've strung together six wins and a draw to stake a place in the top five. The Jets inconsistent form has resulted in them falling out of the top five, leaving them trying to find a way back in before it's too late.
A big crowd was in attendance thanks to the President's luncheon and a good showing from the Saints supporters. It was a pretty chilly, overcast day. Steady rain in recent days contributed to the ground being very muddy in the centre in particular. Heavy rain continued for the first half before easing during the second. Whilst not overly windy, the Dandenong creek end of the ground saw most of the goal kicking action for the match (perhaps 'kicking with the tide' was the way to go).
The Saints did kick to the creek end during the first term and dominated proceedings early on. Darren Kennedy got the first goal for the visitors six minutes in. Lukas Appleby followed suit with two in a row soon after. It took until the 14 minute mark for Luke Broadbent of the Jets to register the first of their two behinds for the quarter. Whilst the defensive pressure from the Saints was high, the Jets were showing signs of playing smarter wet weather footy than their last home game against the Basin. Nick Cox and Appleby goaled for the Saints to give them a 32 point lead at the first break.
Coach Steve Buckle's address to the players in the huddle focused on guarding dangerous forward Appleby, increasing the talk out on the field and hopefully getting the backs to set the tempo a bit more.
The Jets got off to a cracker of a start in the second term with the opening bounce being cleared quickly to Levi Horton for his first goal of the day just 45 seconds in. Kevin Clark popped up for a goal five minutes later before Nick Stow responded for the Saints. Following Horton's second and third goals at the 11 & 14 minute marks respectively, there was a lull in proceedings goal wise as both sides struggled for forward momentum. Luke Broadbent got things back on track at the 23 minute mark when he kicked a lovely goal on the run from about 50 - 60 metres out, the ball skidding through the open goal square. Very smart play indeed. Cox booted his second goal for the match to close out the quarter and give the visitors a 13 point lead at the major break.
The mood in the rooms at half time was upbeat, the focus on staying warm. After a brief chat from Bucks on minimising turnovers and staying positive, the Jets were back on the ground early to keep moving and warm up again.
The third term was not kind to the Jets. Their intensity dropped off a little, tackles started to slip and occasional over use of handball resulted in turnovers to the Saints. It was typical scrappy wet weather footy. Whilst far from a one-sided affair in general play, the Jets did struggle to capitalise. Appleby was the sole goal kicker for the term, bagging three to push the lead back out to 37 points at the last break.
Bucks urged the Jets forwards to play in front of their opponents in the final term to maximise the chances of a clean mark. Leigh Odermatt goaled two minutes in for the Jets to keep them in with a chance before Tom Hallinan responded for the Saints soon after. A final (seventh) goal for Appleby at the 23 minute mark capped off a 44 point win for the visitors.
There were numerous solid efforts for the Jets on the day. Luke Broadbent continued his good form with Best on Ground honours - what a season this guy is having! Steve Shore played well around the centre, using his height and strength to advantage in many a marking contest. Jake Sherriff played well down back, as did Dylan Sverns and Robby Savory, the latter having the unenviable task of trying to hold Appleby. Justin Fry did very well in the ruck, whilst Kevin Clark and Steve Burns ran and attacked the ball all day at every opportunity. Levi Horton did what all captains should do; leading by example, he made the most of his opportunities to keep the Jets in the contest during the second quarter.
Coach Buckle was happy that the Jets gave it a real crack all day, whilst conceding that they probably lost out in strength in the latter part of the game against what is a pretty tall side in South Belgrave.
Unfortunately, the loss puts the Jets 14 points behind the Saints who are currently fifth on the ladder. With only six more games to go (plus a bye), the task of making finals is tough to say the least. I hope the Jets fight it out to the end, starting with a win (fingers crossed) against the Eastern Lions next week at Fairpark Reserve.
Go Jets!

Comments: It was a knockout final of sorts for the under 18's on Saturday. Coming into the game, our boys sat in fifth position, a game and around 20% ahead of South Belgrave. A win to us would begin to shut the door and put us two games in front.
The ledger between the two sides was squared at one win a piece. We went down in dramatic fashion at South Belgrave after the siren by the slimmest of margins (one point). Our boys turned it around four weeks later with a comprehensive 64 point win.
Before the game, each player knew how important this game was to the opposition, they were going to come out firing, put the pressure on early and hope that we crumbled. The first term was definitely a tussle as we kicked two goals to their three and were still moving the ball reasonably well considering the conditions.
The second quarter proved to be our Kryptonite this week as the Saints skipped out to a four goal lead at half time and we managed just five behinds for the term. They had only had two more scoring shots but had found themselves edging further and further out of reach.
At three quarter time, a tough tussle in the third had seen us outscore them by two points, two points less to get in the final quarter. It was all or nothing for our boys as we lined up, pushing up the hill had its advantages in the final term with the sun at the backs of our marking forwards. It was going to take an effort, the ruck work from Nick Jeffs was second to none especially in that last term, giving us the run we needed from the middle as we booted 4.5 in the final term and probably should have had a few more.
In the last term we held the ball in our forward line for a majority of the time but with spare men pushing down it became harder to score. After some undisciplined action from the South Belgrave midfield which will now see one player on the sidelines for three matches, Anthony Bucello set up a nice team goal to add to the three he personally already had. When James Taylor slotted his second for the day and celebrated accordingly, we had jumped to a nine point lead and had a base to work from. One final extra goal was scored and that was game.
A well deserved win after a hard six weeks. The boys ran out the game in the best possible way and really stamped their claim on at least fifth spot this season.

Comments: It's been over two years since the Jets have played the Lions at Fairpark Reserve. Back in round eight 2008, Kevin Clark helped the Jets to a 29 point victory by booting five goals for the day. The return match at HE Parker Reserve later that year saw the Jets cruise home by 88 points in round 17, with Danny Baker booting five goals also. Due to the fact that we have 11 teams in 4th Division this year, we don't play every team twice, hence this was to be our only game against the Lions for 2010.
It's fair to say the Lions haven't had a good run so far this year, with only one win against Surrey Park in round one to their name. That said, the Jets and Lions have had a pretty good rivalry in recent years so I expected them to come out firing and give it their all.
It was a drizzly day without any breeze to speak of last Saturday. Recent rain has obviously caused havoc to the Fairpark Reserve surface, with much of it feeling like a glue pot to wade through. The Jets got away to a good start with early goals to Levi Horton and Kevin Clark. Jacob Meyer got the Lions on the board with their first goal nine minutes in, closely followed by Gareth Bailey. Horton booted his second at the 18 minute mark. Further goals to Steve Sigismundi and Ben Podger-Carroll gave the Lions the lead. Duncan Jones goaled from about 45 metres out at half forward, Reece Taranto responded in the dying moments of the quarter to help the Lions retain an eight point lead at the first break.
Coach Steve Buckle suggested that after a great start, the Jets had lapsed in the first term. He praised Jones's attack on the ball and the good work of Steve Burns and Jono Knudsen. He urged the team to get smarter when driving the ball from the backline, lift the work rate and keep their heads over the ball.
The Lions started the second quarter where they left off, booting early goals via Jamie Devenish and David Ryan to further extend their lead. Jones booted his second for the Jets seven minutes in to steady the ship. The muddy conditions prevented both sides from gaining much on the scoreboard in the following period. At around the 18 minute mark, a few remarks, coupled with some jumper punches led to a full on melee right in front of the pavilion. This was further ignited when Meyer charged in from 30 metres away to crunch into the back of Sam Anderson. It was a chaotic scene, one for which I was stunned not to see a single yellow or red card appear. As is often the case, the umpires just balled it up and play continued. Very soon after, Meyer was rewarded with a free and converted for his second goal of the game, much to the dismay of the Jets supporters. Perhaps the melee was enough to spark the Jets into action. A quick reply from Chris Walters was great to see. Horton booted his third at the 27 minute mark to bring the Lions lead back to just six points at half time.
Bucks was peeved at the way the Jets started that second quarter, highlighting that they were too slow to respond at times and let their opponents play of them too much. He was however rapt with the way they lifted during the latter part, how they chased and were hard at the contest.
The third quarter was very even, goal scoring wise. Leigh Odermatt got his first for the game in the opening passage of play, one minute in. Leigh Rankin responded for the Lions a few minutes later. Scoring slowed somewhat until Clark got his second major at the 19 minute mark. Joel Margenberg goaled for the Lions five minutes later to close out the quarter and maintain their six point lead.
In the final huddle, Bucks urged the players to pick up the pace again, hit the contest hard and to give the forwards room to lead by when deep in attack.
The Jets certainly lifted in the final term. Odermatt booted his second goal seven minutes in. Peter Forsyth, playing at full forward following his return from injury, finally broke through for his first goal at the 32 minute mark. Clark snapped a beauty from the pocket for his third, five minutes later. When Sindrey goaled at the 29 minute mark, the game had definitely swung the Jets way. Rankin got his second for the Lions at the 34 minute mark, Forsyth then closed out the game with his second at the 38 minute mark. The quarter ran so long in part due to a stretcher being needed to get Jaime Campbell off the field following a leg injury.
The end result was a 22 point win for the Jets in very trying conditions. Bucks was rapt with the player's endeavour and they way they ran out the game strongly. He named Odermatt, Kieran O'Driscoll, Nick Seller, Justin Fry, David Want, Jono Knudsen, Burns and Clark as some of the better players for the day and it would be hard to argue against that. Horton lead well all day and Dylan Sverns was great across the back line too.
Melee aside, it was a pretty good tussle in muddy conditions to watch. The Jets have adapted to this style of play out of necessity in recent weeks. I only hope they can continue their winning run against Canterbury at home this week.
Go Jets!

Comments: It was another big game for the under 18's on the weekend and a chance to open up a gap between ourselves and the sides outside the top five. The Eastern Lions put it to us in the first encounter with the boys getting over the line by seven points, then with Jesse "Godra" Francis leading the way with ten goals in an 80 point win. This week saw us head to Fairpark once again in what quickly became a very defensive match. In the end the boys got up by 14 points.
It was reasonably close in the first quarter. The Lions were the first to score a major. In the end the boys went into the first break leading, but only just with the backline holding well against a few shots from the Lions forwards.
The second term proved much of the same with our boys managing a few majors while we held the Lions well across half back. Some good work saw us leading at the half time break, with a mountain of work to do to really shake Eastern off our tails.
A defensive match quickly turned into scoring stalemate with the Lions not being able to pass into their forward 50, but managing with numbers back to keep us from really applying scoreboard pressure at what was the scoring end. Tempers flared after big Bryce stepped in to give Nick Anderson a helping hand, earning himself the respect of his teammates and a yellow card in the process, whist his opponent was sent off by the red.
After that it was like spot fires around the ground as the game started to heat up. The Lions couldn't score and resorted to fists to solve the situation. Managing 2.5 for the quarter, we opened out the lead and went in 20 points clear.
The final term saw us nicely ahead early but slip ups at crucial points saw the Lions get back to within three kicks at the final whistle. In the end it was a reasonable win for our boys and another step on the path to finals.
The conduct of our boys was unquestionable during the third term. When challenged physically, every single player found the line between mateship and fist fights. When the game got to an uncontrollable point during that third term, our boys demonstrated the mateship within our side.
Mateship is something that we have lacked over the first few months to an extent. Every boy on that field should be proud of the way they handled themselves during that period, we kept our heads in the game and made them pay on the scoreboard.
Well done lads!

Comments: The Jets hosted the Cobras for the first time last Saturday, looking to redeem themselves following a fairly dismal effort in round five. That day saw the Cobras win by 26 points at home to notch up their second win for the season. They'd since won another three, drawing level with the Jets on 20 ladder points going into this game. With fifth spot on the ladder still up for grabs, both sides had plenty to play for going into this match at HE Parker Reserve.
Several changes were made for the Jets with Ali Knudsen returning from a lengthy injury, Jake Sherriff back, and most notably, Wally Galbraith being elevated to the seniors to play his 200th game. Nick Seller, Jaime Campbell and Peter Ferrier were the players dropped.
Despite being cloudy, the rain stayed away for the duration of the match. The centre square area was still exceptionally heavy with mud, but the rest of the ground wasn't too bad. The biggest weather influence came from a strong north westerly with the bureau predicting up to 100 kmh gusts. Whilst the pavilion wing of the ground was somewhat protected, elsewhere it was very windy resulting in numerous shots on goal drifting offline.
The Cobras kicked with the breeze to the creek end during the first term. Will Villani booted the first goal for the Jets four minutes in. Despite the best efforts of both sides, only two more goals were kicked for the quarter, coming from Brent Isles and Justin Ellis for Canterbury around the 17 minute mark. The wind was playing its part as much as the defensive efforts of both sides in denying goals.
Coach Steve Buckle was pleased with the good start in trying conditions. He suggested that the Jets aim to run and carry a bit more, and then kick longer to get past the opposition's defenders as they were dropping back in numbers.
The second quarter saw the Jets capitalise with the breeze. Kieran O'Driscoll (long bomb to an open goal square), Leigh Odermatt, Dave Sindrey and Peter Forsyth booted a goal each before Richard Porter could respond for the Cobras at the 16 minute mark. Sindrey responded with his second a couple of minutes later with a lovely snap on the run and celebrated in style. Late goals came from David Carroll, then Odermatt and finally Matthew Pollett after the siren.
The Jets held a handy 17 point lead at half time as Bucks addressed the players back in the rooms. He was very pleased with the bulk of that 2nd quarter with great leads from the forwards etc. He was also very annoyed with some laziness in the closing couple of minutes that handed the visitors an easy late goal. He reiterated that the players must remain switched on at all times.
Odermatt was the Jets sole goal scorer during the third quarter with one four minutes in followed by a lovely set shot from tight in the pocket some ten minutes later. Isles bombed one long into an open goal square at the 18 minute mark to keep the visitors in it at three quarter time. The Jets were in front by only 23 points.
In his final huddle address, Bucks urged the players to keep up the good work and run the game out in style to honour Wally in his 200th game.
The Jets did just that. An opening goal to John Bakopoulos two minutes in was all the Cobras could muster. Odermatt and Kevin Clark booted one each in an otherwise inaccurate quarter (eight behinds were kicked) to give the Jets a 35 point win in the end.
Odermatt achieved best on ground honours for the second week in a row, with what Bucks proclaimed was his best game for the year. His work rate in running, creating leads and booting goals was second to none. Awesome job. Dylan Sverns was great across the backline, reading the play well and repelling the ball back up forward time and again. Sindrey was back to his best, 'owning' the scoreboard side wing of the ground and running the ball along it numerous times. Jake Sherriff and Duncan Jones both had solid games, as did rookie Kieran O'Driscoll.
It was a very solid team effort from the Jets, one which did do Wally proud, but just as importantly, kept their finals hopes alive. The next test will be when they host Templestowe after the bye on July 24th. I'm looking forward to that one greatly.
Go Jets!

Comments: The Jets hosted Templestowe last Saturday, the first meeting between the two sides since that infamous match in 2006 when the Jets won on an adjusted score by one point. It was in round 15 at Templestowe Reserve that the home side were found to have 19 players on the field about 10 minutes into the third quarter. A head count was called and after a review by the EFL on the following Tuesday, the score of 13.2 accrued by Templestowe to that point in the game was nullified, giving the Jets their second win for the season. That's no way to win a footy match and to this day remains one of the strangest days I've ever had at a game.
This game for the Jets was a chance to redeem themselves with a proper win and keep their finals hopes alive for 2010. It was always going to be a tough assignment as the Dockers were sitting second on the ladder and had only lost two games for the year. Their full forward Paul Eccles went into the game on 89 goals for the season too, leading the fourth division goal kicking tally following an 11 goal haul last week against Canterbury.
Weather wise, it was a drizzly, overcast day with minimal breeze. The ground was still quite heavy from previous day's rain, particularly in the centre square which remained devoid of any grass to speak of.
The first quarter was a terrific contest with both sides playing tough, uncompromising, defensive footy. Ryan Bain got the first goal on the board for the visitors eight minutes into the game. It took a further eight minutes for the next goal, this time to Eccles. Levi Horton put the Jets on the board at the 23 minute mark before Kane Maghamez responded with his first major to close out the quarter and give the Dockers an 11 point lead.
Coach Steve Buckle was very pleased with the way the Jets handled the pressure during the first term. He urged them to keep up the good work, adding that they should try to avoid having too many numbers diving on the ball as this had been exploited a bit by the visitors.
The second quarter saw the Dockers really turn up the tempo. Holding the Jets goalless for the term was bad enough, adding 7.5 to extend their lead to 57 points at half time added insult to injury, literally. Duncan Jones hurt his knee quite severely at the 16 minute mark and had to be taken from the field on a stretcher. This was the only real interruption to the flurry of goals that came from Eccles (x3), Matthew Groat (x2), Troy Rosenlis and Maghamez.
Bucks was obviously concerned with the way the Jets played out that second quarter. The intensity and communication evident in the first quarter had dropped off a bit. Over use of handballs was resulting in turnovers, as was sloppy kicking. He asked that the boys pick themselves up to run out the game as best as possible, knowing their season was on the line.
Maghamez opened the goal kicking in the third term 90 seconds in. Will Villani bagged one for the Jets a few minutes later. Eccles dobbed his sixth for the game soon after, followed by Emil Ware to further extend the Docker's lead. Peter Forsyth got the Jets second goal for the term at the 11 minute mark. Thereafter, it was all Dockers with further goals to Eccles, Groat (x2) and Maghamez.
The final huddle saw the Jets trailing by 85 points and looking defeated. The Jets had held on reasonably well for much of that third quarter, but once again turnovers proved very costly. The call from Bucks was to try and win the last quarter to salvage some pride in the match.
Will Villani snagged his second for the game from the opening passage of play in the final term. Groat bagged his fourth soon after, followed by Eccles and Chris Davies. Robby Savory was given a run up forward and goaled at the 12 minute mark. Eccles once again responded soon after. Savory bagged one more at the 19 minute mark before Eccles booted his tenth for the day to close out the game.
Bucks summed it up simply, the Jets were beaten by a much better side on the day. The Dockers are well disciplined in their attack on the ball, their disposals and their game plan. The Jets in contrast suffered from poor disposals at times and a lack of overall consistency.
Steve Shore played another top game for the Jets, this time taking out best on ground. Rookie Kieran O'Driscoll showed plenty of ability for someone new to the game. Dave Want, Sam Anderson, Brent Furniss, Dylan Sverns and Ali Knudsen also played well. Robby Savory had the unenviable task of trying to contain Eccles for much of the match. He did very well in the one on one contests, but I would guess he'd prefer to be up forward booting goals instead.
Whilst still mathematically possible to make the top five, it seems highly unlikely. The run home sees the Jets visit Forest Hill and the Basin, before hosting the Glen Waverley Hawks in the final round. Good luck to the boys - do your best and see what happens from here.
Go Jets!

Comments: The Jets traveled to Forest Hill Reserve last Saturday to take on the Zebras in yet another do or die effort to stay in the finals race. The Jets were out to redeem themselves against an opponent that pipped them by the narrowest of margins back in round seven at HE Parker reserve. That day saw the Zebras take control in the third quarter, followed by a spirited fight back in the final term by the Jets. If only that game had gone a minute or two longer!
It was a fine, mild and sunny day with occasional clouds blowing through courtesy of a gusty north westerly cutting diagonally from one pocket toward the clubrooms. The ground was in pretty good nick, a bit sandy/muddy in places but otherwise relatively dry.
The Jets had made seven changes for this game due to a combination of injury and personal commitment factors. Out was Peter Forsyth, Brent Furniss, Justin Fry, Sam Anderson, Duncan Jones, Brock Mason and captain Levi Horton. Travis Ling, Steve Burns, Dean Thomas, Sam Barling, Matt Baker, Wally Galbraith and Jake Sherriff came into replace them.
The Jets were kicking with the breeze in the first quarter and started off well with a goal to Kevin Clark in the first minute. Playing coach for the Zebras, Stuart Wynd, responded with his first a few minutes later. Steve Burns goaled at the ten minute mark, soon followed by Will Villani who's snap from 40m out was shepherded through the goal square. Ryan Payne goaled a minute later to keep the Zebras in touch. Burns snagged his second soon after. Leigh Odermatt snapped a nice 20m banana kick from the pocket to get his first at the 21 minute mark. Wynd closed out the term with two late goals to bring the Zebras back within nine points at the first break.
Coach Steve Buckle was very pleased with the opening term by the Jets. They had followed their game plan well, the midfield were on top, all were hitting targets and the forwards were in the best form he'd seen for the year so far due to the hard work and attacking pressure.
The home side got off to a good start in the second quarter with quick goals to Adam Slater and Shane Luby before Will Villani responded for the Jets four minutes in. Daniel Adams and Slater each goaled for the Zebras. When Clark responded for the Jets at the 18 minute mark, they were five points behind. Burns kicked his third at the 29 minute mark, followed by a late one to Luke Harley for the Zebras, giving the home side a seven point lead at the main break.
Bucks addressed the boys in the rooms at half time, saying how terrific they were playing at the moment. It was obvious that the passion to win had returned, the communication on field amongst teammates was up, as was their desire to apply tackling pressure. He urged them to remain focused on the job ahead, especially considering how Forest Hill had taken control in the third quarter the last time the teams met.
The third quarter was a great one for the Jets as they fought to take back the lead. The opening goal to Clark was the best of the day in my opinion. Odermatt was chasing the ball to the pocket area boundary with an opponent in hot pursuit. He deftly palmed the ball backwards to Clark who picked it up cleanly and snapped from a pretty tight angle, leveling the scores at 61 points each. Clever play indeed.
Dave Want got in on the goal kicking action with his first at the six minute mark. Another twelve minutes passed before Dave Sindrey had an easy set shot from the goal square (courtesy of a relayed free kick) to boot his first goal. Drew Keltie broke the drought for the Zebras at the 20 minute mark with his first goal. Jono Knudsen took possession from a ball up soon after, hand passed it to brother Ali who converted with a lovely snap from 40m out. Wynd responded with his fourth goal soon after. Odermatt booted his second for the day to close out the quarter and give the Jets a 13 point lead.
Bucks praised the Jets defenders for holding dangerous forward Adam Slater so well for the first three quarters. He also praised the forwards and the pressure they applied. He urged the whole team to continue the good work and to run the game out strongly.
Odermatt kicked his third goal for the day four minutes into the final term. Slater responded soon after for the Zebras. Robby Savory goaled at the nine minute mark. Little did anyone know, but that would be the final goal for the Jets that day. The Zebras got on a roll with six goals in the next ten minutes. Michael Volpi, Slater, Wynd, Keltie, Slater and Wynd again, did the damage to give the Zebras a 15 point lead by the 20 minute mark. Two more came from Chris Keech and Keltie to round out the game, with the home side winners by 28 points.
It was a disappointing finish to a terrific game of footy. Whether or not the Jets just ran out of steam, possibly eased off thinking they had enough of a lead, or were simply overrun by a better side on the end, we may never know. All I can say is that had they maintained that pressure all the way to the end, the result may have been more favourable. The disappointment was obvious in their eyes too. This was one that had slipped away despite a fantastic physical effort by the whole side for so much of the game. The coaching staff asked that the team forget about the last part of the game, instead concentrating on how well they played for most of it, when preparing themselves for next week.
Peter Ferrier played a great game, as did Dylan Sverns who had to perform much of the ruck work in the absence of Justin Fry and Sammy Anderson. Will Villani has turned goal sneak in recent weeks and is settling into that role well. Jake Sherriff was solid in defence. Kieran O'Driscoll continued his good form, as did the hard working Odermatt who ran many a lead and presented well all day. Nathan Parker is finding his feet in the senior squad, showing plenty of poise and pace to win numerous contests along the wing.
Whilst they may now be out of finals contention, I hope the boys can fire up again for their next game against arch rivals the Basin next week. The Jets really need to square the ledger with the Bears following the big loss to them back in round nine.
Go Jets!

Comments: The Jets traveled to Batterham Reserve to take on the Basin last Saturday, hoping to give a much better showing than that offered in round nine at HE Parker. That day saw the Bears hold the Jets to a measly 4.3 27 and run away with an easy 66 point win. With the finals officially out of reach for both sides, pride was the biggest thing at stake in the battle of 'The Best of the Rest' - those teams outside the top five.
The Jets had made three changes for the game, bringing in Peter Forsyth, Sam Anderson and Brent Furniss for Steve Shore, Peter Ferrier and Sam Barling.
It was a fine and sunny day at the Basin with a moderate breeze blowing up hill toward the clubroom end of the ground. The ground was in pretty good nick; whilst the drought tolerant grass had browned off a bit, it seemed to provide better traction in the wetter/muddier parts of the ground.
Kicking with the breeze, the Bears got off to a good start with a quick goal to Michael Pudney just 90 seconds into the match. The Jets defence was put to the test as the Bears drove forward relentlessly. Neither side was able to goal for some time until Dave Want kicked truly at the 11 minute mark. Jono Knudsen booted one a few minutes later to give the Jets a slender lead. Matthew Smith returned fire for the Bears at the 16 minute mark with hs first goal. With the defensive pressure remaining high from both sides, neither was able to goal thereafter for the term.
Coach Steve Buckle was rapt with the great start by the Jets. The intensity in their attack on the ball was high. The only suggested improvements were to take a little more time if possible to analyse leads before kicking long, and to get down low for clean pickups when the ball is grounded and in dispute.
The second term saw the Bears extend their lead with opening goals to Max Kruger and Pudney. Will Villani goaled for the Jets after roving a strongly contested pack mark (nearly held by Rob Savory) at the nine minute mark. Savory booted the next one though to put the Jets one point ahead a few minutes later. The Bears were quick to respond with goals to Steve Tibb and Pudney, and closed out the half with a late goal to Tibb.
Assistant coach Jason Fennell remarked on the difference between the two quarters, suggesting the Jets played as individuals in the second compared with as a team in the first. Further, the on field chat had dropped off, resulting in more kicks to contested situations rather than a teammate's strong lead. Bucks suggested that the forwards were not presenting enough leads in the last ten minutes of the quarter. With the game well within reach, he urged the players to kick to advantage better so the forwards could run onto the ball.
The Bears started the third term off with a quick goal to Smith in the opening minute. Aaron Grist followed suit at the eight minute mark. Jono Knudsen kicked his second for the match a couple of minutes later. Dylan Sverns battled away at full forward and was rewarded with a goal at the 15 minute mark to keep the Jets in touch. Andrew Battye goaled ten minutes later to close out the term and give the Bears a handy 23 point lead at the last break. It could have been a considerably larger lead had they not missed a few fairly easy shots.
Bucks address to the players in the huddle was to stick with it, attack at all costs, and switch the play across to opposite flanks quickly wherever possible.
The final term saw Dave Want boot his second goal with a fine snap from 35m out in the pocket just two minutes in. Matthew Biggs goaled for the Bears a few minutes later. Kevin Clark kicked a ripper from about 45m out soon after. Further defensive pressure stifled scoring somewhat until Savory booted two goals in two minutes, bringing the Jets within 10 points at the 21 minute mark. The Jets appeared to have enough momentum to win the game before Daniel Ben Braber sealed it for the Bears with a goal a couple of minutes later.
Bucks praised the Jets spirit in fighting back in the last quarter. He said that a lack of consistency combined with skill errors had contributed to the loss, with the Bears looking cleaner with their disposals.
Rob Savory was judged best on ground in the awards presented back at the rooms that night. Matt Baker played a great game in defence, ably supported by Jaime Villani. Dave Sindrey, Wally Galbraith, Kieran O'Driscoll and Leigh Odermatt also contributed well.
I hope that the Jets can bounce back with a win over Glen Waverley Hawks this coming Saturday at HE Parker Reserve. It would be a great way to end the season and set things up for a great social event that night. Good luck.
Go Jets!

Comments: The Jets hosted the Hawks last Saturday, hoping to win and close out the season in style. There was a lot of emotion riding on this one for Heathmont; Chris Walters playing his 200th and final game for the club, Levi Horton playing his last game as captain following six years at the helm, and wanting to win for Pete Ferrier and Chris Walters who both lost family members during the week. The team also wanted to redeem themselves following the 122 point thrashing the Hawks handed out in round six at Capital Reserve.
The Jets had made three changes to the side from last week; Ali Knudsen, Brent Furniss and Kieran O'Driscoll were out, replaced by Aaron Hamer (his senior debut after a strong season in the reserves), Levi Horton and Steve Shore.
It was a fine and cool day at HE Parker Reserve. The ground was still soggy thanks to higher than average rainfall, and there was a strong north westerly breeze present favouring the creek end of the ground. That breeze played havoc with quite a few kicks along the wing that ended up blowing off course and out of bounds on the full as the game progressed.
In a sign of solidarity and compassion for a grief stricken teammate, the Jets brought their pre-game huddle across to the boundary in front of where Peter Ferrier was standing, before shaking hands and wishing him well as they ran off to take their positions on the field. Double arm bands were worn as tribute to both the Ferrier and Walters families.
The Jets came out with a different game plan than usual, trying to flood the backline quite heavily and restrict the likes of Matt Carnelly who booted 11 goals back in round six. The defensive pressure was intense from both sides. It took until the 14 minute mark for the first goal to be scored, courtesy of Rob Davies for the Hawks. Leigh Odermatt responded for the Jets with a nice snap, 35m out in the pocket five minutes later. That was it - one goal each for the term! It was a great start for the Jets to hold the Hawks so well, given that the visitors were kicking with the breeze.
Coach Steve Buckle was full of praise for the Jets at the huddle. It was a fantastic start, the game plan was being followed and was working well so far, and the Jets were dictating the tempo to a large degree. The one point he made was for the players to consider options up forward carefully, rather than blazing away.
The second quarter was similar to the first, although the two goals went to the Jets alone. Odermatt booted his second for the game at the three minute mark. Dave Want goaled at the 14 minute mark with a lovely 45m kick from the boundary in the pocket. Holding the visitors to just one behind for the term was awesome to watch.
Bucks addressed the players in the rooms at half time in a quiet, composed manner. He claimed that the first half was the best half the Jets had played for competitiveness and discipline. He urged the players to stay mentally strong as the expectation was that the Hawks would fight back in the third quarter.
The Hawks did just that with goals to Davies and Clint Walker to open up the term and reduce the deficit. Odermatt got his third courtesy of a relayed free kick at the 12 minute mark. Walker replied for the visitors a few minutes later. Odermatt booted two more for the Jets, Davies and Raymond Sibly replied for the Hawks to close out a tense quarter and reduce the Jets lead to just two points.
The message at the final huddle was simple, keep up the good work and hold out the Hawks as best as possible.
An opening goal to Want just two minutes in stretched the lead back out and seemed to give the Jets some momentum. A tense, defensive period of 18 minutes passed without a goal being kicked by either team. Davies broke the drought with his fourth, followed by Josh Gray a few minutes later to give the Hawks a four point lead. When Davies booted his fifth at the 29 minute mark, it was game over.
The players looked 100% spent following the match. There was disappointment on their faces due to the emotion riding on this game, however I know they gave their absolute all and that's all any supporter can ask of any team - give it your best shot.
It's not always easy to select the best players when everyone played so well. Odermatt was outstanding with his work rate and five goals for the game. Jake Sherriff, Dylan Sverns, Robby Savory, Steve Burns, Want, Sam Anderson, Peter Forsyth and Jaime Villani all played above average games too.
That is it for the seniors 2010 season. The reserves and colts will go on to contest finals. Best of luck to both as they continue to represent the Heathmont Football Club.
Go Jets!
