Comments: This was the first meeting between the Jets and the Pioneers since that fateful grand final day in 2007 when the Jets lost by 104 points. Fresh from their own victory in last year's grand final (the flag was unfurled before the Jets faithful prior to the start of the game) and with a solid pre-season completed, the Jets were looking to regain some respect after the poor showing some 18 months prior.
The first quarter saw the visitors favoured with a nice breeze blowing up from the creek end. The Pioneers adapted well to the conditions, kicking into space when in attack, and dropping back to flood their defence whenever the Jets tried to make a forward move. Their accuracy in front of goal made the difference as the Jets struggled with the swirling conditions kicking into the breeze. The Jets had just one less scoring shot for the term but trailed by 21 points at quarter-time.
Our new senior coach Gareth Woodcock addressed the team at the first break, asking the players to help each other out with more talk. He was concerned that there were a couple of incidents where players were caught by their opponents that may not have occurred if they were warned accordingly. He said that the turnaround should come with the use of the breeze, as long as the forwards are given space to lead to the ball.
The second quarter was a reversal of the first, with the Jets holding the Pioneers goalless and responding with 4.6 for the term. Chris Paver, Leigh Odermatt, Dave Sindrey and Mick Aitken (back from his extended Queensland adventure) kicked a goal each. Dylan Sverns, Luke Broadbent, Peter Ferrier and newcomer, Steve Buckle, were all solid through the first half.
Gareth was please with the team's intensity during the 2nd quarter but reminded them that they would need to step it up a notch during the 3rd quarter. The tackle count would need to increase in order to hold Whitehorse at bay.
The breeze had dropped considerably by the time the 3rd quarter started and Whitehorse came out and took control early, kicking 4.3 to 0.2 for the term and once again holding our half forward line very well. Despite having two power forwards in Aitken and Danny Baker, the delivery just wasn't there for them.
With the margin just 19 points at the last break, the game was still up for grabs. Gareth asked the players to back themselves when running the ball forward, and to give the forwards more opportunity by kicking to a lead, rather then giving the Pioneers an opportunity to spoil when bombing the ball too deep.
The final quarter was quite a tussle but the Jets intensity seemed to drop a little in the end and the Pioneers prevailed by 29 points.
The back line were solid all day. Chris Walters teamed up well with Steve Buckle and Daniel Irwin. The younger players such as Kevin Clark, Luke Broadbent, Peter Ferrier, Dylan Sverns and Steve Burns all had consistently good games too.
Whilst the Jets can take some positives from this game, it was there to be won. There is no doubt that the team has improved considerably since the last time they met the Pioneers, and there is also no doubt that they can improve on what we saw on Saturday. Being round 1, it looked like they hadn't quite hit their stride, something I hope they can do for their next game against Nunawading on April 18th.

Comments: The Jets travelled to Koonung Reserve for their first game against Nunawading since Round 10 2006, when they lost to the tune of 31 points. For those that have not seen Koonung Reserve, it is definitely one of the smallest grounds in the EFL. As a result, a mistake in your forward line can very quickly come back to bite you at the other end.
It was a pleasant April day with no sign of any wind advantage. The Jets got off to a good start with two goals to Mick Aitken in the first 9 minutes before the Lions fought back. Further goals to Daniel Irwin, Aitken and Levi Horton saw the Jets take a handy 22 point lead into the first break. Leigh Odermatt did well at the stoppages up forward, and Dave Sindrey had a great quarter along the wing.
The second quarter saw a reversal of fortune with the home side booting the opening goal in the first minute. Aitken and Irwin were our only goal scorers for the quarter as the Lions took control and slammed home a very accurate 7.2 to regain the lead at half time by 9 points. The Jets seemed to struggle a bit in the ruck and our options up forward were well guarded by the Lions defenders.
The third quarter saw the scoring from both sides drop off a bit, although the Jets managed to grab a slender 5 point lead back. Goals came from Aitken (another 3) and Odermatt - both of whom kicked one under pressure from the boundary line from the pocket to lift the side when needed.
The Lions opened the final quarter with a quick goal in the first minute. Danny Baker was awarded a free at the 5 minute mark following a scuffle which saw a Nunawading player yellow carded, and kicked truly for his only goal of the day. When Odermatt got his second and Aitken his eighth, things were tense but looking ok for the Jets. Nunawading were not to be denied though, and responded with two late goals to overturn the slender lead and sneak home by 6 points.
If you were a neutral observer, the finish would have been thrilling. But to Jets players and supporters, the result was one of disappointment at letting one get away.
Mick Aitken was obviously in great form with 8 goals for the day. To give you some idea of the attention he commands, I was watching a passage of play late in the game and when the ball was kicked to the goal square, I counted six opponents ready to spoil. Matt Baker was solid across the back line, as were Steve Buckle and Peter Ferrier.
Rade Djuric had an ok day in the ruck, beaten from time to time, but always putting in a solid effort to collect possessions around the centre square. Dylan Sverns shared the ruck work with Rade and showed plenty of potential, and likewise made his presence felt with some strong possessions. Jono Knudsen and Dave Sindrey led by example with their tireless work rate.
Whilst a 0-2 start to the season is far from ideal, I'm confident a win won't be too far away. Let's hope it starts this coming Saturday when the Jets host Mitcham.

Comments: It was a very blustery day at HE Parker Reserve last Saturday as the Jets hosted Mitcham for the first time in many years. The strong breeze was a northerly which definitely favoured the Dandenong Creek end of the ground.
The Jets kicked into the breeze in the first quarter. It wasn't long before Mick Aitken kicked his first at the 3 minute mark. The Tigers responded well with a long bomb from about 60m out sailing through a minute later, followed by another four throughout the rest of the quarter. The Tigers took a handy 23 point lead into the first break.
Kevin Clark opened the second quarter with a nice snap from the pocket to get his first goal 4 minutes in. Aitken got his second a few minutes later, before the Tigers rallied with two answering goals. Whilst a late goal to Aitken saw the Tigers lead reduced to 15 points, it would be fair to say that the Jets failed to take real advantage of the breeze.
The third quarter saw the Jets boot 7.3 into the breeze whilst holding the Tigers to just 3.1. This was a sensational effort with the goals coming from Pete Forsyth with 2 (playing at CHF instead of CHB), Jono Knudsen, Aitken, Darryn Paul and Levi Horton.
The final quarter had the Jets on a roll, with Leigh Odermatt, Dave Sindrey and Aitken booting four majors in the first 16 minutes before Mitcham responded with 3 in a row. When Aitken nailed his 7th for the day from the pocket, it was all over as the Jets ran out comfortable 28 point winners.
Chris Walters, Matt Baker and Steve Buckle were solid across the back line all day. Peter Forsyth made a welcome return from injury and picked up some very handy possessions across half back in the first half. Jaime Villani did very well, with numerous contested possessions won.
Steve Burns, Dave Sindrey and Chris Paver had many good turns of speed, running the ball out of the pockets and along the wings time after time. Jono Knudsen played well around the centre too.
Odermatt and Aitken were awesome up forward, providing many options to attack. Whilst both are known for their great marking ability, it's their second efforts and ability to hold their footing that ensure their opponents are kept extra busy.
Whilst Dylan Sverns didn't appear to be involved in as much ruck work this week, his presence across half back when Pete Forsyth moved forward was invaluable, filling the hole and taking several good grabs.
Coach Gareth Woodcock was rapt in the team's performance after the game. Their ability to remain disciplined and play strong man on man footy during the third quarter set up the win, Gareth's first as senior coach. Hopefully this will be the start of some momentum in the Jets season. Next up is Coldstream on Saturday. Good luck lads.

Comments: The Jets travelled to Coldstream for their first match against the Cougars since round 14 2006. The Jets hosted that day and after 13 losses straight, broke through for their first win of 2006 by just 8 points. Mick Aitken kicked eight, and Kevin Clark kicked three on his senior debut, to ensure Levi Horton and Steve Tucker could celebrate their 150th and 100th games respectively.
Times have changed of course, and following a pretty consistent win against Mitcham the week prior, there were high hopes that the Jets could back it up again this week against Coldstream. I wrote recently about how small the Nunawading ground is at Koonung Reserve. The Coldstream Reserve is completely opposite, in fact probably the largest ground I have seen in my travels through EFL venues. It has very wide and open wings, something to be exploited by a quick running side.
The conditions were perfect, with barely a breeze to be felt and no sign of any rain as the game commenced. The Cougars Leam Doughty booted their first major at the three minute mark before Mick Aitken and Kevin Clark responded soon after. Doughty booted two more for the term and Aitken answered back with his second, as the Jets took a slender two point lead into the first break.
Coach Gareth Woodcock was pleased with the first quarter efforts, but did highlight that the Jets were losing at the stoppages. More coverage around the ball ups was requested.
The Jets started to take control during the first half of the second quarter, with two majors to Leigh Odermatt and one more to Aitken before the Cougars responded in the last ten minutes with two goals to Scott McDonnell and another to Doughty. Coldstream led by the slimmest of margins at the major break.
Coach Woodcock spoke to his players on field prior to heading back to the rooms. He was pleased generally, but concerned about the last ten minutes where a drop in work rate, lack of accountability and lack of defensive pressure allowed the Cougars back into the game.
The Jets started well again in the third quarter with two more goals to Aitken in the first nine minutes. Scrappy play ensued until Doughty responded with his 5th major at the 20 minute mark. Dylan Sverns replied with his first goal of the day to round out the quarter. The Jets took back the lead by 11 points at the last break.
Gareth was well pleased with the Jets improvement at the stoppages, and believed our boys had the legs left to run out the game well.
Injuries to Luke Broadbent, Odermatt and Sverns didn't help things, but the final term was dominated by Coldstream as they booted 5.3 to 0.3 to run out winners by 19 points. Doughty booted another four to finish with nine for the game, and Cougar Captain Matt Price kicked the last one just prior to the end of the game. Full credit to Coldstream for running the game out to the end.
Gareth's summary of the last quarter was that whilst the back line remained solid, the midfield were unaccountable in not manning up enough, and the side went with a bit too much handball instead of trying to kick forward. The disappointment was evident, from the playing group to the coaches and supporters - this was one that got away.
Whilst much attention is given to Mick Aitken each week, I wish the Jets had applied the same back to the elusive Doughty. Peter Forsyth, Matt Baker and Jaime Villani combined well to drive the ball from defence. Chris Paver, Kevin Clark, Steve Burns and Dave Sindrey played very solid games and used their pace well. Dylan Sverns continued his good form, and Jaime Campbell made the most of his return from injury. A special mention was made of Rade Djuric for his never give up run at the ball and efforts to lay tackles.
Let's hope the Jets can bounce back when they host Warrandyte this week.

Comments: A big crowd was in attendance for the Jets first game against Warrandyte since round 18 2005. The relegation battle to stay in 3rd division was won by the Jets that day to the tune of 74 points. Fast forwarding to 2009 and the Jets and Bloods had just one win each heading into this round 5 match up, hence a win being so important to staying in touch with the ladder leaders.
The first quarter saw Warrandyte squander their scoring opportunities, kicking 0.5 to 3.2. Mick Aitken kicked his first just two minutes into the game. Levi Horton slotted through a lovely goal from a tight angle in the pocket about 15 minutes later, before Dylan Sverns smothered a kick in by Warrandyte's full back and Chris Paver roved truly to kick his first.
Coach Gareth Woodcock was pleased with the first quarter effort from the Jets, citing good work rate and communication amongst the players. He reminded the players to be aware of Warrandyte pushing back into defence, and to have full coverage at the centre bounces.
The second quarter saw Warrandyte fight their way back into the game well. Goals to Adam Gamble, Ben Torney (3 majors for the term) and Michael Morello were answered with singles to Aitken and Horton. The Bloods took a slender 6 point lead in at half time, had they kicked straighter, it could have been more.
The Jets had been out-run a bit during the second quarter and weren't attacking quite enough. A couple of 25 metre penalties proved costly too. Gareth reminded the boys to look at all options when kicking to the forward 50 and urged them to pick up the pace again.
The third quarter saw the Jets draw even on the scoreboard thanks to Aitken with another 3 goals and Pete Forsyth getting his first from a stint at half forward. Singles from Lee Evans, Matt Wood and Morello kept Warrandyte well in it. Rade Djuric had started to win a few tap outs against his taller opponent during the quarter and Forsyth's move to half forward proved very beneficial again.
The final quarter was quite tense as both sides did their best to claim the four points. The Bloods prevailed in the end with goals to Evans, Ton Naughtin and Luke Dunn, before Ali Knudsen responded with the Jets only goal for the quarter.
There were many solid contributions from Jets players during the match. Once again, the back line were represented with Matt Baker, Chris Walters and Steve Buckle all doing well. Peter Forsyth played well at both half forward and half back. Steve Burns, Ali & Jono Knudsen, Jaime and Will Villani, Dave Sindrey and Chris Paver all ran the ball well. Jaime Campbell was commended for his job in limiting Matt Wood's impact in the second half. Mick Aitken played at his usual high standard too.
With the disappointment behind them, the team now looks forward to visiting Tormore Reserve this Saturday to take on Boronia, currently fourth on the ladder. Hopefully the good vibes from their last visit there (scene of last year's grand final victory) and a relentless effort will see them win over the Hawks. Make sure you're there to cheer them on.

Comments: The Jets travelled to Tormore Reserve for their first game there since their historic three point win over Chirnside Park in last years 4th Division Grand Final. The challenge this time would be just as difficult, facing the home side in Boronia who were sitting 4th on the ladder. The last time these two teams met was back in 2006 when the Jets hosted the Hawks and won by 21 points in round sixteen.
The breeze was unpredictable for much of the day, not always there, but when it was it favoured the canteen end of the ground.
The Jets opened the first quarter with a nice goal to Leigh Odermatt. Tom McNamara, Tristan Kreymborg and Dean Grice responded for the Hawks with successive goals five minutes later. Kevin Clark chimed in with a goal at the 14 minute mark to keep the Jets in the hunt. Boronia fought on with another goal to Kreymborg and then Jess Bolton to finish out the quarter 18 points up.
Coach Gareth Woodcock was pleased with the tackling and accountability from the Jets players, but urged them to run the ball more and to look for centre corridor options first before taking the easier option out wide.
The second quarter saw the Jets respond well as Chris Paver kicked truly just 30 seconds in for a goal. Scott McKenzie replied for the Hawks before Dylan Sverns and Mick Aitken returned fire for the Jets, bringing the margin back to about 6 points. Another goal to Kreymborg and Odermatt rounded out the first half.
Gareth was pleased with the way the Jets ran the ball that quarter. As Duncan Jones was winning a few hit outs, Gareth stressed for the midfielders to talk up and help Duncan improve the clearance rates.
The following quarter saw a superb tussle between the two sides with neither prepared to allow an easy goal to be scored. The pressure was intense, resulting in just single goals to Richard McNamara and Grice, then Aitken in reply. The Jets physical presence, tackling and work rate were fantastic as they kept themselves in contention, just 13 points behind at the last break.
The final quarter saw the Jets continue the pressure. An opening goal to Dave Sindrey in the first minute was followed by Odermatt's third for the day 10 minutes later. Kane Murphy goaled for the Hawks before Jono Knudsen brought the margin back to just 3 points at the 15 minute mark. Boronia were able to step up a notch when it counted though, as Kreymborg booted three more majors in 7 minutes, followed by a couple more to Richard McNamara and McKenzie to round out the quarter and finish 33 points ahead.
Gareth was pleased with the first three quarters of the game, and obviously disappointed with the end result. Whilst the work rate was good, a few opportunities in front of goal went amiss. He praised Dave Want's effort in his senior debut for the Jets, highlighting his ability to back himself and run the ball when the opportunity arises. Steve Burns did a great job on Grice. Duncan Jones made the most of his late inclusion, his rucking and second efforts earning praise from the coach.
I thought Jono Knudsen led the team well in the absence of Levi Horton, out injured. Despite what appeared to be a nasty clash of heads with Chris Brandner in the third quarter, he fought on with his usual determination and courage. Steve Buckle continued his great form, and another new player to the club this year, Mark Okur, picked up quite a few possessions. Chris Paver deserves a mention too as he never stopped running the ball with his incredible pace. Chris Walters, Matt Baker and Will Villani also played pretty well.
This week sees the Jets hosting Upper Ferntree Gully. With the competition (Mooroolbark aside) fairly evenly spread, the Jets are still only two games and percentage out of the top four, even though they sit ninth on the ladder. A couple of wins would provide a welcome boost to their confidence and see them move up the ladder once again. Make sure you're at HE Parker to support them this Saturday.

Comments: The Jets hosted Upper Ferntree Gully in fine and still conditions last Saturday. With the 1989 reserves grand final reunion and annual past players association luncheon in full swing, a big crowd was on hand to see if the Jets could lift for their 2nd win of the season.
The last time the two sides met was back in round 18, 2006. Heathmont were already destined for 4th Division via relegation and had nothing to lose except pride. It turned out to be quite an entertaining and attacking game, with Mick Aitken booting 11 goals to take his season tally to 80 at one end, and Grant Noon an kicking 9 at the other end to crack the ton for Upper as they held on to win by 27 points.
The first quarter started with both sides attacking well. Ben Hoath opened the scoring for Upper with two goals in the first five minutes before the Jets replied with three in a row to Mick Aitken soon after to take over the lead. Upper returned fire via goals from Shannon Graham and Luke Galliott before Leigh Odermatt got his first for the day. Upper took a slender four point lead into the first break.
When coach Gareth Woodcock addressed his players at quarter time, he warned them to be mindful of their opponents hard running from their half back line and urged them to lift their work rate with tackling.
The intensity of the game was maintained during the second quarter with three goals a piece in the first eleven minutes. Luke Broadbent snagged the opening goal of the term just two minutes in before Jayden Sherlock from Upper replied a minute later. Dylan Sverns was followed by Tim Watts, Odermatt & Sherlock as the goals kept flowing in quick succession. The scoring eased somewhat in the second half of the quarter with Matt Petracca getting his first, followed by Aitken getting his fourth from a set shot after the siren.
The Jets returned to the rooms for the major break just five points behind and looking determined. Gareth said they were taking the game on well and would need to keep that pressure up in order to stay in it. He asked the forwards to mix things up a bit by moving in and out of the 50 metre arc to generate some leads, and reiterated to the smaller players to be front and centre ready for the crumbs should a mark be spoilt.
The Gully boys stepped things up a notch in the third quarter, stifling the Jets attack whilst maintaining a steady stream of goals. Tim Riseley, Sherlock, Tate Hickelton and Brad Carroll blew the lead open before Aitken responded at the thirteen minute mark with his fifth for the day. Further goals to Carroll and and Rudi Falovic saw Upper hold a 25 point lead at the last break.
Gareth commented that whilst the work rate was pretty good, the Jets conversion rate was letting them down. Booting 1.5 for the quarter to Upper's 5.1 showed how much inaccuracy can hurt on the scoreboard.
Matt Baker was shifted to the centre for the last quarter to try and break things up a bit. Upper managed to keep their work rate up for the final term as the Jets ultimately faded. They opened the term with goals to Dominic Di Mascio and two more to Petracca before Aitken got the Jets final major for the day at the 17 minute mark. Further goals to Petracca and Sherlock sealed the Upper Gully win by 58 points, giving the Jets their biggest loss for the year.
Gareth addressed the team on field at the conclusion of the game. He was disappointed that there were only about four Heathmont players who matched the work rate of the Gully boys for the whole game. Poor decision making at times, combined with a lack of discipline when manning up on direct opponents were the major factors in the blow out.
Best players for the Jets included Aitken with his six goals for the match, Steve Buckle continuing his good form across the half back line, and Dylan Sverns who worked tirelessly against taller and stronger opponents in the ruck. Will Villani provided plenty of drive from the back pocket and Dave Sindrey seemed to have regained some confidence in his game, making leads across the wing and backing himself to run the ball forward on numerous occasions.
Gareth chose to award players after the game who had been given a task and stuck to it well. Jaime Campbell, Steve Burns, Luke Broadbent, Duncan Jones and Chris Paver were the recipients.
The Jets travel to Quambee Reserve to play North Ringwood (currently eighth on the ladder) next Saturday. Hopefully a full four quarter effort will be rewarded with four premiership points to the Jets. Make sure you're there to offer your support.

Comments: The Jets travelled to Quambee Reserve to take on North Ringwood. Apparently this is the first meeting between the two sides since 1985. My own records don't go back that far and so much has changed since then that it barely matters, although there was some light hearted banter about whether Ari van Tilburg was still playing for Heathmont at the time - we're talking a long time ago folks!
Quambee Reserve was once a landfill area (as was HE Parker I believe) and has a cutting into a hill along the southern goal end. A moderately gusty breeze blew in from the south favouring the northern end of the ground.
The Saints kicked with the breeze in the first quarter, opening with goals to Josh Barton and Anthony Sharp before Leigh Odermatt replied for the Jets. Daniel Walls chimed in for his first of four for the day and Jaime Villani responded soon after with a nice shot from the pocket. The Saints added two more for the term and took a handy 21 point lead into the first break.
Coach Gareth Woodcock addressed the players and asked them to evaluate their options before blazing away to Odermatt, and to watch the Saints run off half back.
The second quarter was much more even. With two goals to both Odermatt (great snap from the pocket for his third goal for the day) and Mick Aitken (his second came after the siren for half time), and a single to David Sindrey at the end of one his dashes through the centre, the Jets looked to have turned the tide and were starting to hold their own. The Saints meanwhile had more accuracy kicking into the breeze with six straight for the quarter, all from different goal kickers. Rod Mitchell, Sharp, James Dean, Jamie Miles, Walls and Barton helped ensure the Saints build their lead to 25 points at the main break.
The Saints started the third quarter off with quick goals to Walls and Mitchell. Chris Paver had been one of our best afield until tragedy struck around the nine minute mark. He was carted off on a stretcher with a broken leg following an attempted tackle gone wrong. Once play resumed after a six minute delay, the Saints slammed home eight goals (from seven different players) in 15 minutes to blow the Jets away.
Gareth urged his players to try and win the last quarter at least, a difficult situation with no uninjured interchange players left. Being more disciplined in manning up would be the key if the Jets were to accomplish this.
To their credit, the Jets did win the last quarter, just, with goals to Will Villani, Dave Want, Brodie Wag and a fourth from Odermatt. With the damage done in the third quarter, the Saints wouldn't have been to fussed as they ran away with an 86 point victory.
Best players for the Jets in my opinion were Chris Paver who continued his fine form before injury struck, Steve Buckle and Matt Baker for their work across the back line, and Jono Knudsen who continually puts himself in the contest, cops his fair share of bumps as a result, but keeps on going like a captain should.
The Saints fully deserved the victory as they played a more disciplined match and won more of the clearances. The injuries to Luke Broadbent (late in the first quarter - didn't return) and Aitken (missed the second half), and of course Paver, just added to a miserable day at the office for the Jets.
We can only hope that with the week off, some injured players will return in time for the game against the undefeated Mooroolbark team on June 13th. We're going to need a strong and focussed team to knock them off.

Comments: The Jets hosted undefeated ladder leaders Mooroolbark last Saturday in overcast but fairly still conditions. There was a good crowd on hand to witness the first match between the two teams since round 12 in 2006, when the Mustangs prevailed by 7 points in a very low scoring affair - only 11 goals were kicked in total for the game. The Jets have suffered through injury and a bit of inconsistency in recent weeks so I was looking forward to seeing how they would go against the Mustangs. Being a milestone 100th game for Matt Baker might provide the Jets with extra incentive to win.
Luke Miller got the scoring underway for Mooroolbark with a goal at the two minute mark. The Jets were quick to respond with two each to Peter Forsyth and then Mick Aitken in a six minute burst that had the team fired up nicely. Division 3 goal kicking leader Kire Talevski got his first goal at the 14 minute mark for the Mustangs. Intense pressure from both sides was the order of the day, with an extra goal to Aitken and Talevski rounding out the quarter. With Robby Savory (back for his first senior game in quite a while) combining well with Aitken and Forsyth, there were plenty of options up forward and it was a very promising start.
Coach Gareth Woodcock was pleased with the players discipline in manning up one on one, and also that the Jets were holding their own at the stoppages for the quarter. He reminded them to chip short or take extra time on their decisions, rather than blazing away into the forward line too quickly.
As top sides so often do, the Mustangs bounced back at the start of the second term, with five goals in a row coming from Talevski, Sam Wubbeling, Mark Alexander and Paul Hagar in the first ten minutes. The Jets lifted in response and were rewarded with two more goals to Aitken before Miller kicked a late one for the Mustangs.
Despite the strong effort by the Mustangs which saw them win more clearances from stoppages, the Jets trailed by just 16 points at the major break. Coach Woodcock was pleased with Savory's efforts in presenting across the forward line and urged the team to stay switched on to the task at hand.
The Jets were kicking to the creek end with the aid of mild northerly at their backs as the third quarter got underway. Savory snagged his first goal with a nice snap from about 35 metres out in the pocket in the first minute of play. Aitken followed up with his sixth for the game soon after, before a quick reply from Alexander for the Mustangs. Aitken goaled again at the 9 minute mark. Once again, our luck with injuries was not good with both Forsyth and David Want retiring hurt and off to hospital. Savory and Aitken goaled again, as did Talevski to round out the quarter, and the Jets had a slim 3 point lead going into the last break.
Once again, the message from coach Woodcock was to remain focused and do the best with the limited bench.
Matt Polkinghorne got his first goal to open the scoring for the Mustangs at the 3 minute mark of the final term. Dave Sindrey kicked a great goal on the run in reply a couple of minutes later. After that, the Mustangs got on top and ran away with the game with six goals in a row coming from Talevski (he finished with 7), Wubbeling, Alexander and Tommy Lee.
Mooroolbark showed that they can lift when needed and were able to pull away for a well deserved 36 point victory. Despite that, there was a lot to like about the Jets performance on the day. I was impressed with their disposals in particular, it seemed like a lot more kicks and hand passes were hitting their intended targets regularly than in recent times. Their accountability in manning up was another feature for much of the game, aside from a couple of lapses.
Best players in my opinion were Aitken (hard to deny someone who is double teamed most of the day and still boots 8), Steve Buckle, Forsyth before being injured, Ali Knudsen for his run through the centre, Sindrey for his ability to find space on the wing so often, and Dylan Sverns who contested well in the ruck and also dropped back in the hole across half back when needed. Chris Walters, Daniel Irwin, Chris Ryan and Steve Burns played solid games too.
Injuries are a fact of life for all football clubs, and I take nothing away from Mooroolbark's performance on the day. What I hope for is that the Jets can get the likes of Odermatt, Horton, Clark, Paver and Danny Baker back on the park soon, along with Forsyth and Want. That way we will hopefully regain some momentum and win a few more games before the season is out.

Comments: The Jets visited Springfield Park to play Whitehorse Pioneers, currently third on the ladder, last Saturday. Conditions were overcast, with a moderately strong southerly breeze favouring the "up hill' or scoreboard end of the ground. The Pioneers took round one honours at HE Parker and had progressed well since the last meeting so it was going to be interesting to see how the Jets would measure up this time.
As you can see from the scores above, it was a very dark day indeed for the Jets. Put simply, they were out-classed from start to finish. The first quarter wasn't too bad, with the Jets holding their own at the stoppages and manning up reasonably well. There were patches of good play at times, but the discipline and consistency that saw the Jets seriously challenge Mooroolbark the previous week wasn't fully there.
To their credit, Whitehorse took advantage of the situation and received a welcome percentage boost on the ladder. With a spread of 12 different goal kickers, they were very hard to contain defensively. Aidan Kerin set many goals up for the likes of Paul Fiorenza, Jarrod Marshall, Adam Barker and Jamie Carpenter.
There were some solid performances from the Jets. Ali and Jono Knudsen were fearless in their attack on the ball right through the game. Darryn Paul, Daniel Irwin, Steve Buckle and Steve Burns continued their good form, and Mick Aitken did his best with limited delivery into the forward line. Jake Sherriff made his debut at senior level, up from the colts who had a bye this week. He clearly showed he has a lot of potential and made the most of his opportunity.
One good thing to come from the game - no ambulances were needed to take any Jets players to hospital, unlike in previous weeks.
Hopefully the players can put this game behind them quickly and move on with some focus, confidence and optimism when they host Nunawading this coming Saturday.

Comments: The Jets hosted the Lions last Saturday in perfect conditions, given we're in the middle of winter. Whilst cool and overcast, any breeze was minimal and there was no chance of any rain. In their first meeting this season back in round two, the Lions over powered the Jets late in the last quarter to sneak home by six points.
The Jets lengthy injury list resulted in opportunity for three senior debut's for this game; Sam Anderson, Chris Barry and Nathan Parker all coming up from the reserves. Despite further changes in personnel, it was hoped the Jets could bounce back following their shocking effort the previous week against the Pioneers.
As is often the case, Mick Aitken snagged the first goal for the Jets, just two minutes into the match. Robby Savory chimed in with his first major six minutes later. A tense struggle ensued with the Jets defence holding strong, and the forwards unable to convert with much accuracy until Chris Barry goaled at the 21 minute mark. Lions captain Sam McCallum goaled soon after, followed by a reply from Aitken. The Lions rounded out the quarter with late goals to Andrew Goland and Liam Riley.
Coach Gareth Woodcock was quite pleased with the efforts from his players as he addressed them at the first break. He asked them to give the likes of Aitken and Savory room to run onto the ball when delivering to the forward line, and for the onballers to stay tight with their opponents.
Nunawading opened the second term with three goals in a row coming from Riley and Chris Adolph, before Darryn Paul and Aitken could respond for the Jets. Joel Anderson snagged his first for the Lions at the 12 minute mark. The Jets were on a roll thereafter, with goals coming from Aitken, Leigh Odermatt, Chris Ryan and Savory, to increase their lead to 22 points at the main break.
The mood amongst the players as they entered the change room was very positive, far more so than in recent weeks. Gareth had a few messages during the break including to take care with tackles, chip the ball around rather than bomb long too early, and to look for Savory as he seemed to have the upper hand at half forward.
Aitken kicked truly for two more goals in the opening minutes of the third quarter. McCallum, Goland and Rhys Harrop replied as the Lions fought back. The Jets persisted strongly, leading to another two goals to Aitken before Adam Clarke and Gareth Britten goaled for the Lions to bring their deficit back to just 14 points at the last break.
Gareth's address to the players was short and simple, the game is up for grabs as long as they have the determination and desire to succeed.
The Lions were not about to give in easily. With quick goals to Anderson, Britten and McCallum, they took the lead at the eight minute mark. The Jets lifted when they needed to, delivering to Odermatt for two quick goals in reply. The Lions returned fire again, with McCallum getting his fourth major to even the scores at the 23 minute mark. Savory kicked a behind soon after, followed by the goal that sealed the result at the 25 minute mark.
Whilst much of my commentary above focuses on goals kicked, it was truly a team effort that got the Jets over the line. When the Lions hit the lead and again drew even, I was rapt that the Jets had the spirit to keep going and eventually win.
As great as Aitken and Savory were up forward, Steve Buckle, Dylan Sverns, Chris Walters, Matt Baker and Chris Ryan held things together down back. Jono Knudsen led by example once again, tackling hard and doing all the 1%'ers that can make or break a game. Rade Djuric rucked strongly for much of the game and Steve Burns continued with his good form.
This is the sort of win that can turn a season around and inspire confidence among the players. I hope that is the case when they travel to Mitcham this coming week, as a win would see them open up a three game break on the ladder over the home side who have yet to register a win this year.

Comments: The Jets travelled to Walker Park to take on Mitcham last Saturday. When the Jets hosted the Tigers in round three, they broke through for their first win of 2009 with a 28 point victory over the visitors. The Jets would have to wait until Round eleven for another win (against Nunawading - see above), whilst the Tigers had come close but not quite got there for their first victory. A win this week would be critical for both sides, a three game break on the ladder awaited the Jets if they won, whilst the Tigers could close the gap to just one game on the ladder and gain some confidence if they won.
It was an overcast day with a moderate north westerly pushing diagonally across the ground, marginally favouring the Maroondah Highway end. The ground was wet from earlier rain, although further showers held off until late in the game.
The first quarter got underway with a goal to Mick Aitken at the four minute mark. Dave Sindrey's smart kick along the ground from about 35m out four minutes later was swooped upon by Aitken for his second goal of the term. Josh Appleton got the Tigers on the board with a goal at the 13 minute mark as the pressure intensified. Mitcham had plenty of shots on goal at the Maroondah Highway end during the term but inaccuracy was costing them on the scoreboard. A late goal to Ben Miller saw the Tigers go into the first break with a slender seven point lead.
Coach Gareth Woodcock was disappointed with the lack of accountability the Jets were showing. He urged the half forwards to tighten up and the back line players to weigh up their options before blazing away too quickly.
The second quarter saw Aitken goal six minutes in before a quick reply from John Tymenson. James Quilty and Andrew Herd followed that up with goals of their own. Aitken steadied the ship for the Jets with two more goals in quick succession before Miller goaled just after the siren for half time. The Tigers increased their lead to 14 points at the main break.
Gareth was pleased with the second half of the quarter for the Jets. He encouraged the team to stay positive, get more front and centres at the contests across half forward, and for the forwards to mix up their movements to create more leads.
The third quarter saw Leigh Odermatt goal just two minutes in. Jarrod Witnish replied soon after for the Tigers. Odermatt kicked his second goal about five minutes later whilst Mitcham continued their assault at the other end with several more behinds. Aitken kicked two more for the term, whilst Mitcham added three more courtesy of Quilty, Miller and Reese Kelly, and took a 20 point lead into the last break.
Gareth urged the Jets to show some accountability and try to remain positive for the last quarter. That clearly didn't happen unfortunately as Mitcham had ten scoring shots to nil, including two goals from Aaron Miller, and one more to both Appleton and Herd. The Tigers ran out convincing 50 point winners. Had they kicked straighter, the damage could have been far greater.
As the Tigers headed to the change rooms to belt out their club song for the first time this year, the Jets were in warm down mode, reflecting on their disappointing performance. A lack of intensity and perhaps a sense of complacency had contributed to one of their poorest showings since a soggy day in round 12, 2007 when Surrey Park smashed them by 54 points. That proved to be a turning point for the Jets then, and I can only hope it works again now.
There were few solid contributors for the Jets. Aitken presented well up forward whenever possible. Steve Buckle, Matt Baker, Daniel Irwin and Chris Walters were kept busy down back. Jono Knudsen worked hard at ground level and Rade Djuric likewise in the ruck.
Congratulations to Mitcham on the win, they clearly wanted it more than the Jets. The next challenge for Heathmont will come from Coldstream, currently seventh on the ladder, this coming SUNDAY at HE Parker Reserve. Make sure you're there to support the boys when they take on the Cougars.

Comments: The Jets hosted Coldstream last Sunday in overcast conditions. There was a moderate northerly favouring the creek end of the ground and sporadic showers throughout the game.
The importance of this game was high for both teams. The Cougars were seventh on the ladder and only two games behind the Pioneers in third, so a win would keep them in finals contention. For the Jets, the battle to remain in third division whilst being just one game ahead of Mitcham should be incentive enough. Wanting to atone for last week's loss against the Tigers, and help Levi Horton and Darryn Paul celebrate milestone games (200th & 150th respectively) with a win should certainly have done it. Unfortunately, that was not to be the case.
The Cougars came out ready to play in the first term with six unanswered goals, kicking up hill into the breeze. Matt Price kicked his first major just two minutes in. Daniel Den Braber, Leam Doughty and Wayne Devisser added more goals before the Jets finally snagged their first score for the game, a point at the 14 minute mark. The Jets were not hitting their targets across the forward line, making for easy turnovers to the Coldstream defence. Further goals to Doughty and Price rounded out the quarter for the Cougars and gave them a 34 point lead at the first break.
Coach Gareth Woodcock reminded his troops to remain accountable. He asked for more from the forward line in particular, more strong leads required, and a general lift in work rate from everybody.
The second quarter saw the Jets take control early. Kevin Clark signaled his return to the seniors with a lovely snap from the pocket in front of the bar four minutes in. Mick Aitken kicked his first goal six minutes later, followed by Dave Sindrey, Chris Ryan and another from Aitken in quick succession. The Cougars replied with goals to Adam Dale, Matt Stark and Devisser to take a 23 point lead into the major break.
Gareth's address at half time focused once again on the forward line and the need to make space for the likes of Odermatt, Savory and Aitken to run to the marking contest. He praised Sam Anderson for his work in the ruck, and for the better work rate of the on-ballers in manning up and tackling in the middle.
Price kicked the opening goal of the low scoring third quarter at the eight minute mark. Aitken replied a few minutes later for the Jets in what was a really defensive term from both sides. Den Braber and Doughty both added majors to further extend the Cougars lead to 40 points at the last break.
The players were urged by Gareth to lift their work rate and accountability and fight the game out to the end.
Vaughan Wheeler goaled six minutes into the last term for the Cougars, followed by two more for Doughty. Leigh Odermatt replied for the Jets soon after, before further goals to Doughty, Dale, Price and Patrick Murphy blew the lead out to 12 goals. Late goals to Jaime Campbell and Steve Burns brought the final margin back to 60 points.
A lack of consistency seems to be the Jets undoing at the moment. They have shown many times this season that they can match it with most sides for most of the game, but lapses like the opening six goals to nil first quarter can be very costly indeed.
The back line had their work cut out for them and several of them played very well, such as Chris Walters, Matthew Baker and Steve Buckle. Dylan Sverns was outstanding across half back too, utilizing his height and strength to great effect. Sam Anderson had a purple patch in the second quarter, rucking well and taking several great marks.
This was a very disappointing game for the Jets, given all that was riding on the game. Their next challenge is to play fourth position Warrandyte this coming Saturday, so it won't get any easier. I hope they can get the mind set right to make it a closer match than the past two have been.

Comments: The Jets headed to Warrandyte Reserve to take on the Bloods in yet another important game. The Jets need every point they can muster to avoid relegation, despite the four point lead on the ladder over Mitcham. The Bloods, fourth on the ladder going into this game, were looking to strengthen their position in the lead up to the finals.
A sunny but windy day greeted the crowd gathered for the match. The Bloods kicked with the aid of a decent breeze toward the Warrandyte Rd end of the ground and didn't muck around, with goals to Jade "Death" Hill, Tom Naughtin and Michael Morello coming in the first ten minutes. Mick Aitken (playing at centre half forward this week with Robby Savory in at full forward) goaled for the Jets a couple of minutes later, before the Bloods replied with majors to Ben Torney, Ross Ansaldi, Morello and Ansaldi again. Leigh Odermatt snapped truly from a tight angle in the pocket at the 20 minute mark. Luke Dunn closed out the quarter five minutes later to give the Bloods a commanding 41 point lead.
Coach Gareth Woodcock was pleased with the level of tackling in the first quarter, and with Sam Anderson's efforts in jumping into the ruck against a much larger opponent in Hill. Whilst impressed with Aitken's efforts in presenting leads at centre half forward, he reminded the players to seek other options in Savory and Odermatt when Mick was being double-teamed.
Morello got the Bloods going with another goal in the first minute of the second term before Robby Savory was able to reply a minute later. Will Villani and Kevin Clark helped steady the ship a little with goals soon after, before the Bloods ran riot to close out the term with another five goals in ten minutes - Torney, Morello, Steve Christopher and Alex McIntosh doing the damage. The home side had extended their lead to 50 points at the main break.
The more vocal players such as Chris Walters, Levi Horton and Steve Buckle did their best to talk things up in the rooms at half time. Gareth seemed happy with the work rate of the players but suggested their disposals had let them down. There had been passages of play with too many handballs coming undone, rather than going long to a leading forward. He urged the boys to not give up, and not allow the Bloods any easy possessions.
The third quarter saw the sun disappear and a slow down in proceedings on the ground. Tim Beasley kicked the first goal for Warrandyte at the 15 minute mark. Clark replied for the Jets soon after. Morello kicked another two late goals to finish off the quarter. Unlike the first term, the Bloods had struggled for accuracy in front of goal with seven behinds. If not for that, the 79 point margin could have been much higher.
Gareth was pleased with the quarter as the players had tightened up on their opponents and started to take time with their decision making. He urged them to continue and at least try to win the last quarter by running the game out.
Horton and Clark had two goals on the board for the Jets to open the final term. Adam Tsapatsaris and Morello replied for the Bloods. Jono Knudsen marked strongly and kicked truly at the 13 minute mark before Naughtin and Christopher replied for Warrandyte. Luke Broadbent kicked a major at the 23 minute mark before Hill and Matthew Wood responded in kind for the Bloods. Warrandyte were victors by 84 points. Morello finished with eight goals and was simply unstoppable.
This was the third big loss in a row for the Jets and their disappointment was evident as they left the field. Some of the better players were Ali Knudsen (very keen after a week on the sidelines due to concussion), Kevin Clark who's finding his feet again after an extended period away injured, Jono Knudsen and Steve Buckle. Levi Horton showed glimpses of his best as he returns to match fitness. Dylan Sverns was in great form in the first term before a corky saw him sidelined for much of the match.
The Jets host Boronia this coming weekend and really need to make the most of this opportunity to get an extra win on the board. It won't necessarily be easy as the Hawks will be doing their best to get back into the top four on the ladder, currently one game and percentage away in sixth position.
Make sure you get along to HE Parker Reserve this Saturday and support the Jets as much as possible.

Comments: The Jets hosted the Boronia Hawks last Saturday in fine but somewhat breezy conditions due to the northerly favouring the creek end of the field for much of the game. Their first match up back in round six saw Tristan Kreymborg dominate at full forward, booting six goals for the Hawks and going a long way to securing their 33 point victory. The Hawks had progressed to sixth on the ladder with seven wins for the season since then, so the challenge for the Jets to keep ahead of Mitcham in the relegation battle was going to be going to be tough based upon their recent showings.
The Jets (kicking to the creek end in Q1) started with Mick Aitken in the ruck, an unusual choice if not for his freakish ability to leap high with little run up. It was a brilliant move as he connected well on the first several ball ups, setting up clearances for the Jets to drive the ball forward before rushing back to his usual spot at full forward to snare the first two goals, before Odermatt got his first just seven minutes in. Richard McNamara goaled for Boronia two minutes later. Aitken took one of his spectacular grabs soon later and converted truly for his third goal. The positions settled back to normal as both sides fought to control the centre for the following twelve minutes, before the Jets broke the scoring drought through Aitken, Odermatt and then Aitken again just after the siren.
To say the Jets supporters were pleasantly surprised with the 36 point lead at the first break would be an understatement. The players were pumped and keen to get back into it as coach Gareth Woodcock addressed them in the huddle. He urged them to maintain the pressure and be prepared for the Hawks to come out firing. He asked Aitken to keep up the great work, and to mix up his leads a little more if possible, and for Dave Want to use his pace to take on his opponent and drive the ball forward.
Aitken once again started the quarter in the ruck, and it paid off with two more goals at the two and eight minute marks for him before a quick reply from Scott McKenzie for the Hawks. Boronia lifted their work rate and were able to subdue the scoring rate of the Jets. They struggled for accuracy in front of goal however (3.7 for the term) before Kreymborg got a couple of late ones to bring the margin back to 28 points at the main break.
Gareth asked the forward line to stay deep in the third quarter to make most of the breeze, and for all to stay focused on the job ahead.
The Jets dominated the third quarter with six unanswered goals coming from Aitken (three in a row), captain Levi Horton, and then Odermatt with another couple to close out the quarter. It was truly inspiring stuff and probably one of their best quarters this year, holding the Hawks to just two behinds and extending their lead to 62 points.
The players were switched on and ready to go during the huddle at the last break. Gareth had little to say other than keep it up.
The Jets did just that. Aitken started in the ruck again and the Jets took off with five goals straight in the first 15 minutes, Horton, Aitken, Kevin Clark, Dave Want and Robby Savory doing the damage. Jess Bolton goaled soon after for the Hawks, Odermatt replied for the Jets. Mckenzie got his second at the 24 minute mark and Jono Knudsen, Savory and Odermatt responded to blow the lead out to 102 points. Steve Cross and Kreymborg goaled in the dying minutes for the Hawks and brought the final margin back to 89 points.
Gareth was beaming after the game and joined players and spectators alike to belt out the club song with great gusto back in the change rooms. He was rapt with the entire team's performance. Their work rate never let up through the entire game. Calls from the trainers for the boys to rehydrate with Gatorade went largely ignored as the celebratory beers arrived. What a game!
It is impossible to ignore Aitken's impact on the game. Whilst he has kicked more than 11 goals in a game before, his contribution in the ruck to help get some centre break momentum at the beginning of each quarter really set the team up well. When Odermatt wasn't spoon-feeding Aitken or the other forwards, he was back to his best booting six majors for the day.
Dylan Sverns continued his fantastic form across the half back line and showed how much we missed him when injured during the Warrandyte game last week. Luke Broadbent, Dave Want, Dave Sindrey and Darryn Paul provided plenty of drive from the back line and along the wings. Levi Horton improved yet again on past week's efforts as he returns to match fitness and led the side well. Ali Knudsen and Will Villani were the best of the smaller players on the day, and Chris Walters and Matt Baker performed well in defence all day.
It really was a full team performance, one that I'm sure will provide a much needed boost of confidence for the Jets as they run out the remaining three games. The 89 point margin provided a 6.64% increase on the ladder, a much needed jump to nearly draw level with Mitcham, although they hold a one game advantage over the Tigers. With games against Upper Ferntree Gully, North Ringwood and finally Mooroolbark, they have their work cut out for them to stay ahead of Mitcham and avoid relegation. This win couldn't have come at a better time. Go Jets!

Comments: The Jets travelled to Kings park to take on Upper Ferntree Gully, currently second on the ladder and a real threat to the undefeated Mooroolbark sitting in first place in the looming finals. The Jets had come off an impressive win against Boronia and would have gone into the match hoping for a close result, despite the good form of the home side.
It was an overcast and drizzly day with a decent north westerly wind favouring the Willow Rd end of the ground. Mick Aitken was a late withdrawal due to injury, replaced by Rade Djuric at short notice after originally being named on Thursday night. The Jets would need to work hard to fill the gap up forward but with options like Robby Savory and Leigh Odermatt available, nothing is impossible.
The opening of the first quarter saw both teams fighting it out in a fairly even contest possession wise. Luke Galliott goaled for Upper at the six minute mark (they started with the breeze in their favour), followed by captain Troy Tranter soon after. The Jets made several forays to the forward 50 during the term but could manage just three behinds. Matt Petracca got his first major for the game at the 21 minute mark, Tranter kicked his second after the siren at quarter time.
Despite the home side having a handy 27 point lead at the first break, the Jets had played reasonably well. Coach Gareth Woodcock was pleased with the Jets discipline at manning up, forcing the Uppers to play wide. He also liked the good defensive work and asked the team to be more direct down the middle in the second quarter to try and capitalise with the breeze.
Jayden Sherlock opened proceedings for Upper with his first major at the five minute mark. The Jets battled on and eventually Dylan Sverns was able to slot a great goal through on the run from about 30 metres out, tight in the pocket. As the Jets work rate dropped off, the home side ran riot with three more goals each to Petracca and Sherlock to close out the half 63 points ahead.
Gareth noted that the Jets players had failed to adjust their style of play when their immediate opponents started to take control. With Leigh Odermatt now sidelined with an injury, it was Luke Broadbent's opportunity to step into the key centre half forward position for the third quarter.
There was some great improvement for the Jets when play resumed. After a deluge of heavy rain subsided, Darryn Paul and Levi Horton goaled at the 13 and 18 minute marks respectively before Galliott and Petracca responded for Upper. Late goals to Jono Knudsen and Kevin Clark saw the Jets reduce the deficit to 50 points at the last break.
The final quarter was a very defensive effort from both sides, rebounding out of the back line well. Petracca's sixth goal came at the eight minute mark, Knudsen got his second five minutes later. Ben Hoath goaled at the 22 minute mark, as did Robby Savory soon after. Petracca claimed his seventh major to close the game out and help deliver a 62 point victory to the home side.
Despite the final margin, I was pleased with quite a few elements of the game. Aside from the second quarter where the Jets failed to take advantage of the breeze, they played pretty well and didn't give the game away easily at all in the second half.
Darryn Paul played a ripper of a game until retiring hurt half way through the last quarter. Ali and Jono Knudsen continued their good form, throwing themselves into many a physical contest. Robby Savory presented well and made the most of somewhat limited delivery to the forward line. Steve Buckle and Steve Burn were solid throughout, running the ball well off the half back line. Matt Baker and Chris Walters were also good in defence.
With percentage being a concern for the Jets in their efforts to avoid relegation, their determination to not give up in the second half was rewarded with a modest gain of about .5% on the gap to Mitcham. The Jets still sit one game ahead but trail on percentage by just .85% after Mitcham were soundly defeated by Warrandyte.
The Jets must go full steam ahead when they host North Ringwood this coming Saturday in order to win and avoid a trip back to fourth division. Good luck lads!

Comments: The Jets hosted North Ringwood last Saturday in yet another crucial game. With just a one game lead over Mitcham on the bottom of the ladder, the Jets were pumped to try and make that two games lead to ensure they would remain in 3rd division for 2010. The Saints would have been keen to atone for their 93 point loss to ladder leaders Mooroolbark the previous week. I was just hoping we didn't have any hospital trips for our players, such as what happened in the Jets loss to the Saints back in round eight with Chris Paver and Luke Broadbent.
It was a fine and sunny day with a nice northerly breeze favouring the creek end of HE Parker Reserve. The council's recent asphalt works had come up a treat, allowing the big crowd on hand to stand in front of the clubrooms in comfort, rather than the usual mud.
The Saints were kicking against the breeze in the first quarter, Anthony Sharp booting the first goal for the match just three minutes in. The Jets were able to respond with quick goals to captain Levi Horton and David Sindrey. Josh Barton goaled soon after to even the scores up a bit before Steven Buckle and Kevin Clark booted their first goals late in the quarter to give the Jets a handy 11 point lead at the first break.
Coach Gareth Woodcock was pleased with the Jets efforts in the first term. He said that they did over use the ball in some passages of play and asked them to go longer in the second quarter where possible. Whilst Kevin Clark and Robby Savory were presenting well up forward, there were times where there could have been more support front and centre of the marking contests.
The opening of the second quarter was quite even with goals to Saints players Grant Aitken and Matthew Weeks equalled by Mick Aitken and Clark for the Jets. Heathmont's work rate dropped off in the second half of this quarter allowing the Saints to take a slender four point lead into the main break after further goals to Jess Springett and Jason McConnell. The lead could have been far greater had the visitors been more accurate in front of goal, having kicked ten behinds for the half.
Steve Buckle was very vocal in the rooms during the break, reminding his teammates that the season is on the line, right now. Gareth was concerned with the continued over use of the footy, and with the loss of structure across half forward. He reminded the players to kick to space when driving forward and allow the likes of Aitken and Savory room to run onto it.
Jono Knudsen goaled four minutes into the third quarter, Clark followed that up with his third for the game a few minutes later. The Saints replied with quick goals to Grant Cochrane and Oran Aziz before Stephen Burns got his first for the Jets. Barton and Aitken kept the score ticking for North Ringwood, whilst Savory and Horton did likewise for the Jets to set up a seven point lead at the last break.
Gareth praised the work rate of the Jets in the third quarter, and of Rade Djuric's ruck work. It had gone a long way to slowing down the scoring rate of the Saints. Playing long with solid structure had done wonders.
The final quarter saw North Ringwood gain the upper hand through two quick opening goals to Sharp. Aitken and Adam Baltruweit made it four in a row to the Saints, giving them a 14 point lead. Despite several scoring opportunities, Clark finally got the Jets only goal for the term at the 26 minute mark, time running out all too soon. The Jets own inaccuracy in front of goal (11 behinds for the second half) proved to be their down fall in this eight point defeat.
The disappointment on the players faces couldn't be disguised, this was one that could have been won and made a lot of difference. Gareth was very pleased with their efforts overall, they'd had a red hot go for most of the game. As Wally Galbraith (reserves coach) said to them back in the rooms after the match, they should reflect on the disappointment of the day and channel it into determination for the final round game against Mooroolbark (who were finally defeated by Whitehorse Pioneers that day).
The better players for the Jets included Levi Horton with a true captain's effort, Steve Buckle who was fantastic from half back and through the middle, Dylan Sverns, Jono Knudsen and Luke Broadbent. Kevin Clark was sensational in the forward pocket, mopping up the crumbs to boot four goals for the day. Matt Baker did well down back and Chris Ryan really excelled in the second half.
Unfortunately for the Jets, Mitcham knocked over Boronia to claim ninth spot on the ladder with a handy 3.87% advantage. Both sides face ladder leaders next week, Mitcham are up against Upper Ferntree Gully and the Jets travel to Mooroolbark.
There is no next week - GIVE 'EM HEAPS JETS and do your best to avoid relegation.

Comments: The Jets travelled to Heights Reserve last Saturday for a do or die effort against Mooroolbark to try and avoid relegation. It would be a formidable task given the record of the Mustangs this season, 16 wins straight followed by a loss to Whitehorse Pioneers last week, something they'd be keen to atone for in front of their home crowd. The Jets did reasonably well when they hosted them back in round nine, where a slender three point lead at the last break was finally overrun and the Mustangs won by 36. This game had a lot riding on it for the Jets and their supporters. Mick Aitken was a late withdrawal from the game due to recurring heel soreness, replaced in the side by Jaime Campbell.
It was a fine and sunny day that greeted the large crowd on hand. A strong northerly (worth about 5 goals advantage) was in effect, favouring the old scoreboard end of the ground. The Jets kicked with the wind in the first quarter and due to the intense pressure applied by both sides, struggled to capitalise. Whilst only scoring a single behind for the term, the Jets managed to restrict the flow of the Mustangs by forcing them to go wide most of the time. Kire Talevski broke through for the only goal of the quarter at the five minute mark. The rest of the quarter was full of great tackling and defensive pressure from both teams, stifling the scoring opportunities.
Coach Gareth Woodcock was full of praise for the defensive efforts of his players when speaking with them at quarter time. He rated the tackling as the best he'd seen from them in a few weeks. He asked the team to be alert for centre corridor opportunities in the second quarter as the Mustangs were likely to try and push the Jets wide when they played against the breeze. It was suggested that they use their pace to carry the ball a bit further before kicking to the forward 50 metre zone.
The Mustangs turned up the heat in the second quarter, making the most of the breeze at their backs. Alex Wadsworth goaled just 30 seconds in to the term. The Jets did their best to restrict them, and the home side did their best to keep Heathmont in the game with seven behinds for the term. Goals to Dan Lemon, Wadsworth, Talevski and Luke Jones went unanswered until Leigh Odermatt found space in the goal square and snapped truly over his shoulder for the Jets first major at the 28 minute mark. Matt Jackson replied a minute later to give the Mustangs a very handy 44 point lead at the main break.
Gareth was pleased with the pressure applied and the efforts in tackling, particularly when chasing the ball. He stated that the decision making when the Jets had control of the ball was largely letting them down. He suggested they try and slow the play down a bit to take more time to make better decisions when disposing the ball.
The third quarter was much like the first with the Jets able to restrict their opponents, but at the same time struggling to make the most of the breeze advantage. Talevski snagged his third goal for the Mustangs at the eight minute mark. Robby Savory responded for the Jets with a lovely set shot from about 55m out at the 14 minute mark. The defensive pressure was intense with just one late goal to Matt Polkinghorne to round out the quarter and increase the Mustangs lead to 48 points.
With seven behinds kicked by the Jets, this was a quarter of several missed opportunities to fight their way back into the game. That said, the Mustangs were also struggling for accuracy. Gareth asked the Jets to hang in there as much as possible and try to hold up play as much as possible, with percentage being a potential factor in the relegation battle with Mitcham.
The final quarter saw the scoring increase in the Mustang's favour again. Talevski and Scott Dimitriou extended the lead to 10 goals by the 12 minute mark. Another goal to Savory was pretty much the last gasp for the Jets, followed by further goals to Polkinghorne, Luke Miller, Lemon and Jones for Mooroolbark. The Mustang's inaccuracy of 25 behinds for the game reduced the damage to just 80 points when the siren blew. It could have been much worse!
In his final address to the players as coach (for now at least) Gareth stated that the Jets work rate was great against a top side, but in the end they just couldn't match up against them.
Best players for the Jets included Matt Baker who did really well against 3rd division leading goal kicker Talevski by restricting him to just four goals, Dylan Sverns continuing his great form across half back, Chris Ryan, Dave Sindrey and Kevin Clark for their pace around the wings and centre, and Steve Buckle. Rade Djuric gave 100% in the ruck and around the ground too.
With Mitcham having a much closer result against Upper Ferntree Gully and finishing over 6% ahead of the Jets, it looks like Heathmont will be returning to 4th division for 2010. The only thing that might shake that up a bit is if another team decides to apply to enter the competition and winds up in 4th division.
Whatever the case, the Jets will have learnt a lot this season and know that further depth is needed to cover the injuries that have plagued them this season. Hopefully they can rebound under new coach Steve Buckle and be competitive in 3rd division soon.
