Comments: The start of a new season brings new players and a sense of optimism, something clearly evident at the Jets at the moment. Having secured some fresh recruits such as Darren Sheen, Anthony Hickey, Luke McDermott & Luke Chaplain and combined that with a tough preseason training regime, the squad that fronted the Cobras was pumped up and ready to rumble.

The Jets hosted the Cobras for just the second time in the club's history. The last time the two sides met at H.E. Parker was in round 13 last year when the Jets won by 35 points, a result that was seen as redemption for a poor showing back in round five that year when the Cobras won by 26 points at home.

The weather conditions were overcast and cool, with a moderate (two to three goal advantage) southerly blowing up from the creek, favouring the railway line end of the ground. The oval itself was in fantastic condition as is usual at this time of year. Hopefully any rainfall this winter will be moderate and it will stay that way.

The Jets got off to a great start with early goals to Robby Savory, Jono Knudsen and Sheen, the latter turning to the supporters in 'the pocket" whilst pumping his fist to fire them up early. Jake Rowe responded with his first for the Cobras at the 11 minute mark to steady the ship for Canterbury. The Jets returned fire with four more in a row from Sheen, Gould, Sheen, and Knudsen to open up a handy six goal lead. Late goals to Brent Isles and Andrew Baker saw the Cobras deficit reduced to 28 points at the first break.

Coach Steve Buckle praised his teammates for their great start to the match. He was pleased with the pressure they were applying through tackling, and also their forward structure which left enough room for either Sheen or Savory to surge forward on a lead, something we saw plenty of during this match.

The second quarter was far more even overall as the Cobras found their feet, with Rowe booting his second goal in the opening minute of the term. Savory followed suit for the Jets soon after. Brett Johnson goaled for the Cobras at the five minute mark. Both sides struggled for a bit before Hickey kicked accurately for his first Jets goal eight minutes later. Sheen booted number three for the game before a quick reply came from Johnson. Two more in two minutes from Sheen had "the pocket" cheering loudly once more. A late goal to Rowe after the siren reduced the Jets lead to 34 points at the main break.

Buckle was disappointed with elements of that second quarter when addressing the team in the rooms, suggesting a lapse in concentration had cost the Jets some momentum. He balanced that out with praise for Knudsen (second, third and fourth efforts at the ball were outstanding), James Gould (back from East Ringwood this season), Dave Sindrey and Steve Burns.

The third quarter saw the Jets exert great defensive pressure, so much so that they held the Cobras to just two points for the term. At the other end of the ground, Savory booted two more goals in quick succession around 10 minutes in followed immediately by Hickey with his second. Sheen kicked his seventh for the game at the 20 minute mark.

The Jets had extended their lead to 61 points at the last break. Buckle was stoked, as were his teammates and the supporters gathered around the huddle. What else was there to say except "More of the same please, lets run it out and see if we can finish off with a 10 goal quarter". Buckle may not have got that wish, but he would be far from disappointed overall.

The final term saw the Jets finish as they started, strongly. With goals coming from Leigh Odermatt, Sheen, Kieran O'Driscoll, Savory (two in a row), Sindrey and Sheen again after the final siren, there was little the Cobras could do to respond, despite late goals to Clayton Skate and Justin Perillo.

With a 94 point victory behind them, the Jets left the field full of smiles. Following an energetic rendition of the club song back in the rooms, Buckle addressed the team. He found it hard to single too many players out as it was such a strong team effort. He was very pleased with the newcomers to the club, saying that they had fitted in well and all players were still learning a new style of game plan from last year.

In my opinion, the best players included Sheen & Savory (what a duo to have in form up forward!), McDermott rucked well, Knudsen was simply unstoppable, Matt Baker was great down back, and the pace of Sindrey, Peter Ferrier and Dave Want ran rings around their opponents time and again.

One interesting thing to note is that missing from the Jets side for this game were Levi Horton, Kevin Clark, Ali Knudsen and Mick Aitken, the former pair building up some fitness with a run in the twos, the latter pair hopefully returning from injury in the not too distant future. I'm not sure who you could drop to let them back in, but it would be a nice problem for the coaching panel to work on should it arise.

What a great start to the year for the Jets. I look forward to seeing how they will travel against Glen Waverley Hawks next Saturday. Thanks to the Cobras for hanging back and socialising after the game too, that's what local footy is about.

Comments: The Jets headed to Capital Reserve to take on the Hawks for the first time since round six in 2010, a day that saw them soundly thrashed by the home side to the tune of 122 points. The Jets nearly redeemed themselves at home in the return match in round 18 last year, falling short by just 10 points.

Following a strong showing against the Cobras last week, I was interested to see how the Jets would go against the Hawks. Weather wise, it was a mild day, mostly overcast, with a strong northerly coming in from the clubroom end of the ground.

With the first quarter underway, it became clear that the Jets were switched on and ready to play. The Hawks were kicking with the aid of that favourable breeze. Brad Riddle booted their first goal five minutes in. Matt Fraser followed suit five minutes later before Leigh Odermatt replied for the Jets a minute later with a nice snap from about 30 metres out.

David Sindrey was given a free kick a few minutes later following a deliberate, but unnecessary attempt to rush the ball through for a behind by the Hawks, resulting in his first goal for the game. Matt Carnelley booted his first to close out the quarter. The only downside to the quarter was the accidental blow to the head sustained by Luke Broadbent. He was unable to return to the field for the remainder of the match.

The Jets had held on well to trail by just 9 points at the first break. Coach Steve Buckle urged his teammates to try to control the tempo of the game a bit more. Take time to consider disposals and try not to blaze away in to the forward line. He noted Dylan Sverns and Pete Ferrier for their great efforts during that quarter.

The second term saw the Jets turn that nine point deficit into a one point lead. Following an early goal to Simon Grasser for the Hawks, the Jets slammed home the next three in a row, courtesy of Robby Savory, Ferrier and Jono Knudsen. Carnelley kicked his second goal at the 21 minute mark to slow the Jets momentum.

Bucks was pleased with the second quarter when addressing the team at half time. The intensity was great, but he suggested that the switches in play from one pocket to another across the backline needed to be more quickly executed.

The third quarter once again saw the lead change. Carnelley kicked with his third goal at the five minute mark. Sindrey kicked a ripper on the run to even the scores a few minutes later. Andrew Azzopardi, playing his 100th match for the Hawks, kicked truly at the 14 minute mark, followed by another goal to Carnelley and then Jarrod Butcher. Savory kicked his second to close out the quarter for the Jets.

The final huddle had the Jets trailing by nine points once again. Bucks urged his teammates to remain disciplined, spread out and run, and above all else, start the final term strongly.

Darren Sheen started the quarter off for the Jets with his only goal for the game. Carnelley bagged his fifth soon after. Further goals to David Holmes and Rob Davies blew the lead out to about 20 points before a late goal to Anthony Hickey. The final result, a 13 point loss to the Jets.

Bucks said there were a lot of positives to take from the game. The Jets had not given up at all, and had definitely improved. It was a very close contest and hopefully the players will learn from the few mistakes made.

Best players in my opinion were David Want, Sindrey, Knudsen, Hickey, Ferrier, Steve Burns, Peter Forsyth, and Savory.

One test of a good side is to see how they bounce back following a defeat. I'm really looking forward to seeing the Jets when they take on the Zebras at Forest Hill next Saturday. Hopefully they will return with another victory.

Go Jets!

Comments: The Jets headed to Forest Hill Reserve to take on the Zebras in a keenly anticipated match. The home side had started the season with good wins over the Basin and Eastern Lions, whilst the Jets were looking to bounce back following a hard fought loss to ladder leaders, Glen Waverley Hawks.

The Jets had made three changes for this game, Levi Horton, Kevin Clark and Travis Ling came up from the reserves to replace Luke McDermott, James Quirk and coach, Steve Buckle.

The Zebras defeated the Jets twice last season. In round seven at H.E. Parker Reserve they won by a point, following a last quarter surge by the Jets that unfortunately ran out of time. Then in round sixteen, they stormed home to overtake the Jets in the last quarter to win by 28 points. The last time the Jets defeated Forest Hill was back in round fifteen of 2008, with a resounding 76 point thrashing at H.E. Parker Reserve.

The weather conditions on Saturday were fine and sunny. There was a moderate westerly breeze that picked up as the game progressed, favouring the clubroom end of the ground. The Jets kicked with the aid of that breeze in the first quarter.

The Zebras took control of the first quarter early on. Whilst kicking against the breeze, they seemed to have little trouble slotting through goals via Ash Jones, Max Burton and Stuart Wynd in the first nine minutes of play. Darren Sheen broke the drought for the Jets with his first goal at the 12 minute mark. A second goal to Burton saw the Zebras regain that three goal buffer before Levi Horton snared his first at the 22 minute mark. Neither side goaled for the rest of the term.

Coach Steve Buckle addressed the team in the huddle. He said that the home side had jumped early and were applying a fair bit of pressure, resulting in rushed, poor decisions. He asked that the players take some extra time to size up their options, make a switch across ground if necessary, and deliver better to the forwards who were already leading out very well. He also asked for guys contesting the ruck in the absence of McDermott such as James Gould and Kieran O'Driscoll to offer more of a contest, despite the sometimes daunting task.

Will Villani got the Jets moving with a goal just four minutes into the second quarter. The Zebras fired back with two in quick succession to Adam Slater (easily the biggest bloke I've seen play EFL). The Jets responded in kind with another goal to Sheen, and one to Jono Knudsen, before David Black kicked another two for the home side. Leigh Odermatt was starting to really have a big impact on the game and booted his first goal soon after. Anthony Hickey booted his first major at the 30 minute mark to put the Jets within a point. Sheen slotted one through a minute later, after the siren. That goal really lifted the Jets psychologically, taking a five point lead with them back to the rooms at the main break.

Bucks was well pleased with his team during his half time address. He remarked at how the tide had turned, the Jets were now controlling the tempo more often, having cleaner disposals and hitting their targets more easily.

The third quarter saw Sheen take the game apart. I won't say it was single handedly as every forward knows how crucial delivery is, but it certainly was entertaining to watch. With the Jets controlling the midfield and winning their fair share of clearances, Sheen was able to boot through five goals in 25 minutes, despite having up to four defenders surrounding him at marking contests. Slater, Hayden Sekula and captain Ryan Payne managed one major each for Forest Hill for the term, whilst Hickey slotted his second through to close out the quarter and give the Jets a lead of 15 points at the last change.

Bucks asked for more of the same for the last quarter - keep up the pressure and hard work. The Jets did just that, delivering a third successive six goal quarter. Ryan Clarke brought the margin back to nine points for the Zebras with a goal six minutes in. Sheen bagged his ninth a few minutes later. Some seven minutes passed before Odermatt booted his second (a lovely snap from the pocket), and his third came soon after. Payne kicked the last goal for the home side at the 21 minute mark. The Jets ran the game out with late goals to Kevin Clark, Sheen and Will Villani.

After the game, Bucks was one very happy coach. Despite the slow start in the first quarter, the players had worked harder, stuck at it and delivered a truly memorable away game victory. He did warn that early complacency against the likes of Ferntree Gully could be far more damaging to the score line should the Jets start slowly again.

There were so many great contributors for the Jets. Knudsen continued his strong form, as did Hickey and Peter Ferrier. James Gould contested well in the ruck, a position I'm not sure he would have played too much of previously. Odermatt turned his form around (somewhat subdued last week) with a cracker of a match this week. His marking around the ground and delivery to the forward line was magnificent.

Dylan Sverns did a great job in defence, holding Slater to just three goals for the match. Clark, Horton and Ling proved their worth in being promoted back to the senior list with solid performances too. And what about Mr Sheen? Ten goals is a fair effort any day. Keeping the colts players who support him from one end of the ground to the other entertained is a bonus.

This match was the perfect response to last week's loss. Let's hope they can continue that form with a win at home against Kilsyth after the Easter break.

What a win! Go Jets!

Comments: The Jets hosted the Cougars for the first time since round five in 2008, a match that saw the Jets run out convincing 56 point winners. The return match in round fourteen that season at Pinks Reserve saw the Jets win by 33 points. Whilst the Jets went onto win the flag in 2008 and hence go up to third division for 2009, it was the Cougars who took the opportunity to try out third division in 2010 when Nunawading asked to come down to 4th division to regroup for a while.

There has always been a keen rivalry between the two sides and the large crowd in attendance last Saturday was proof enough of that. The Cougars had come off a win before Easter against South Belgrave, whilst the Jets were looking to keep their momentum up following the great win against Forest Hill. The only change from that game for the Jets was a with the ruck - Luke McDermott coming in for Kieran O'Driscoll.

A perfect autumn day (mild, sunny, no breeze to speak of) set the scene at H.E. Parker Reserve as the match got underway. Leigh Odermatt opened the goal kicking for the Jets just two minutes into the game. Jono Knudsen followed suit soon after with a classic roving effort in the goal square - back turned to goals, he kicked it over his head backwards and straight through - nice work if you can get it. Caleb Rigley goaled for the Cougars at the 11 minute mark. Knudsen responded with his second five minutes later. Jarrod Deans slotted through a major for Kilsyth, only to have Knudsen once again reply for the Jets soon after. Darren Sheen opened his account to close out the quarter and give the Jets a handy 23 point lead at the first break.

There were some injury concerns for both sides arising from the opening term. Peter Ferrier (Jets) and Jarrod Conroy (Cougars) had an accidental clash of heads in a marking contest. Ferrier returned to the ground later that day with staples holding together a cut, whilst I believe Conroy came off far worse and was needing plastic surgery that night. Hopefully he's ok. Additionally, Peter Forsyth retired with a leg injury.

Coach Steve Buckle was pleased with the pressure being applied by the Jets - lots of tackles and 'one percenters'. With just two fit players on the bench, he highlighted that the rotations would be fewer and the team would have to work harder to cover the absences.

The second quarter saw the Jets kick away in style with four goals in 12 minutes. Sheen kicked the first and Odermatt the next two, the latter of which followed several very persistent tackles from Anthony Hickey to cause a turnover and propel the ball forward. Luke Chaplin popped one through too. Paul Cameron got his first goal for Kilsyth, followed by a quick reply by Sheen

It was around this time in the game that Knudsen copped a nasty knock to the chin and had to leave the field for a while. Cameron got another just two minutes later. Robby Savory booted his first at the 19 minute mark, followed by Travis Gordon for the Cougars soon after. Sheen and Hickey closed out the quarter with one each, blowing the lead out to 50 points.

Bucks said the second term was terrific as the Jets stayed focused when the match turned more physical. The backline were holding up well, Steve Burns and Dylan Sverns in particularly good form. He asked the team to keep tackling hard, run the Cougars of their feet, and to try and deliver the ball higher to Sheen to give him more chance to use his strength in marking contests.

The third quarter was more subdued on the scoring front. Sheen kicked his fifth major two minutes in. Cameron responded with his third for Kilsyth a few minutes later, followed by teammate Hamish Hosking. Sheen was involved in one of the funniest scenes at the footy I've seen for a while soon after. Following a strong wrestle for a mark, he flexed his muscles Pop Eye style in front of his opponent who by this stage had had enough - retaliation ensued resulting in a yellow card send off whilst Sheen went back to boot his sixth for the game. You had to be there! Sheen's seventh and final goal for the game came two minutes later. Kevin Clark closed out the term with his first goal.

Bucks addressed the team at the final break. He asked that the team run the game out well and aim for a 100 point win if possible. With the lead currently 72 points, it was well within reach.

The Jets did just that with an eight goal final term. Odermatt booted two, followed by Dave Sindrey and Clark in the space of nine minutes. Jie Smith responded for Kilsyth at the 13 minute mark, before Levi Horton, Odermatt and Knudsen slammed home three more. Late goals to both Jarrod Rickard for Kilsyth and Savory (on the siren) saw the Jets win by 103 points.

This was a crushing display by the Jets. Despite the injuries (even captain Steve Shore finished bandaged up) the Jets still had the conviction and desire to stick to their game plan and run the visitors off their feet. Great stuff.

Best players are often awkward to choose in a game where everyone is doing their bit. I agree wholeheartedly with those listed above (from the EFL page) in Dave Want, Travis Ling, Burns, Odermatt, and Sverns. I also reckon Luke Chaplin, Knudsen. Savory and Clark contributed well too.

The Jets are in ominous form at the moment, just as well as they host the Eastern Lions this week, currently sitting just below them in third on the ladder. It should be a ripper of a game so make sure you're there to see it.

GO JETS!

Comments: The Jets hosted the Eastern Lions last Saturday on yet another perfect autumn weather day. Mild, occasionally sunny, but generally overcast, at least the rain stayed away, as did any sign of a breeze. The last time these teams met was at Fairpark Reserve in round twelve last year when the Jets overcame a melee and very heavy, muddy conditions to come out on top to the tune of 22 points.

This week saw four changes to the Jets line up from last week: out of the side were Peter Forsyth, Peter Ferrier and Steve Shore, all injured, and Matt Baker out due to personal commitments. In came Sam Barling, Kieran O'Driscoll, Nathan Parker and Mick Aitken. This was the first senior game for Sam, Nathan and Mick since last year. Mick last played in round three last year so many were keen to see if he'd lost any of his goal kicking ability, and also how he'd fit in with the new kid on the block, Darren Sheen. It turns out there was little to worry about on either count.

The Jets started out where they left off last week against Kilsyth, dominating play at every opportunity, controlling the tempo and limiting the opposition's ability to score at all. Robby Savory got the scoring underway with a goal in the first minute. Anthony Hickey followed suit four minutes later, then was sin-binned by the umpire with the yellow card following a retaliatory indiscretion soon after.

New recruit (!) Aitken chimed in with two in a row, followed by Jono Knudsen and Kevin Clark closing out the quarter with one each. Whilst Aitken and Sheen were working out their positions up forward, the back six for the Jets continued their awesome work in defence, holding the Lions goalless with many attacks repelled straight back out.

Coach Steve Buckle was very pleased with the great start by the Jets when he addressed them at the quarter time huddle. His only minor concern were some occasional turnovers at half back and he suggested that the players look around for more options before disposing the ball.

The second quarter was far more even on the scoring front with the Lions fighting back to lose the term by just one point. Will Villani kicked truly three minutes in to extend the Jets lead. Luke Gordon finally got the Lions on the board a few minutes later, closely followed by Leigh Murphy after the Lions burst free from the centre break. Seven minutes later, Darren Sheen popped up for his first, followed by a very quick reply from Darren Murphy for the Lions. Sheen closed out the quarter with his second to give the Jets a 26 point lead at the main break.

The half time address from Bucks was quite different. He expressed concern at how the Jets appeared to slacken off a bit, apart from the backline. There was a lack of discipline evident with players running off their opponents too often, getting sucked into contests too easily. The Lions meanwhile had lifted in the midfield, winning consecutive clearances from the centre, spreading out well and delivering better to their forwards. He urged the Jets to refocus on what worked well in the first term and gain control once more.

Heathmont followed instructions well. Hickey booted his second following a push in the back six minutes in to the third quarter. Aitken booted another couple before Ben Podger Carroll replied for the Lions. Sheen booted three in a row for the Jets to bring "the pocket" alive. Jayden Murphy and Aitken snagged a goal each to close out the quarter - the lead now 42 points in favour of the Jets.

The final huddle was more relaxed for Bucks. He asked the players to run the game out and build on the lead already established. The aim was to see if they could pull off another 100 point win. They got close, but not quite close enough.

Early scoring in the final term was all one way traffic with more goals to Sheen, Aitken (x2) and then Levi Horton. Podger Carroll popped up for his second for the Lions, closely followed by David Ryan. Leigh Odermatt finally managed to kick his first goals with two in quick succession around 20 minutes in. Darren Murphy and Podger Carroll closed the game out with a goal each for the Lions. The end result - an 87 point win to the Jets.

Bucks was happy with the end result but highlighted that a full four quarter effort is needed next week against Silvan. He thought the whole team contributed well but did go on to mention the following as having played exceptionally well: O'Driscoll, Parker, Odermatt (work rate very high again), Jamie and Will Villani, Savory, Aitken and Sheen.

Aitken's return to the side was a very positive one - seven goals straight. Whilst he missed a couple of grabs, he completed many too, and showed no sign his leap has diminished. I found that surprising given the achilles troubles he's had for so long. Sheen managed six goals and seven behinds in an uncharacteristically inaccurate day by his standards. From what we've seen so far, that's not likely to occur too often. Both of them heeded the Bucks advice and largely kept out of each other's way when on a lead. Combined with Hickey, Odermatt, Savory and Clark, they made up a very formidable forward line.

It would be remiss of me to not mention the form of Dylan Sverns. His consistency has been outstanding at full back this year so far. I'm tipping he'd be jostling for lead position with Odermatt and Knudsen in the Best and Fairest votes of the season to date. Nathan Parker played well along the wings too, suggesting he will be hard to displace out of the side when others return from injury.

Aside from a lapse in discipline for the game plan in the second quarter, I was rapt in the end result. For second on the ladder to knock off third by that margin was very pleasing. To take first place on the ladder as a result was a bonus, one that should further elevate the mood around the H.E. Parker clubrooms.

The season is looking really good so far for the Jets and it will hopefully continue when they head to Silvan for the first time next Saturday.

Go Jets!

Comments: Silvan hosted the Jets for the first time ever last Saturday. Silvan transferred into the EFL for the 2011 season from the YVMDFL. Whilst their home ground may have been an unknown to the visiting Jets, there were a couple of familiar faces on the Cats side to welcome them in former Heathmont players, Gary Timms and Brett Hartman.

The ground itself is on the smaller side of those I've visited, but does have a couple of nice viewing decks elevated along one wing, hence the different perspective in many of my photos this week. The weather was quite cool and at times drizzly, although the sun did make a few appearances during the day. Wind was not a factor in this match.

The Jets had made three changes to the side from last week: Out: Dylan Sverns, Mick Aitken, Luke Broadbent. In: Matt Baker, Peter Ferrier, Steve Shore.

The Cats started the first quarter running well and booting two goals in as many minutes courtesy of Adam Newing and Trent Matthews. The Jets responded a few minutes later with Darren Sheen and Levi Horton both goaling. Luke Toebelmann brought up the Cats third goal at the 13 minute mark. The Jets then slammed home four goals straight with Sheen, Odermatt, Jono Knudsen and Robby Savory doing the damage. Savory's goal was a spectacular one, kicked from about 40 metres out up against the boundary line - awesome. Jaime Villani laid a great tackle in the backline to prevent another Silvan goal late in the quarter.

Coach Steve Buckle was pleased with the way the Jets responded to the Silvan style of play and early pressure. He thought the Jets run was better once it got going, but did think a few players were drifting into the contest needlessly at times, rather than hanging back with their opponents. He singled Savory and Sam Barling out for praise for their first term efforts.

The second quarter saw the Jets totally dominate. They held the Cats goalless whilst booting seven majors to extend the lead from 20 to 63 points. Knudsen and Dave Want got the ball rolling with early goals in the first two minutes. However, it wasn't until the 13 minute mark that the Jets converted for their third goal for the term, once again from Knudsen with a lovely snap from the pack, about 20 metres out. Anthony Hickey, Leigh Odermatt (x2) and Savory added the remaining goals for the Jets.

Bucks addressed the players back in the rooms at the major break and was rapt with their first half. Despite the smaller ground not being suited to the Jets free flowing, running style of play, the Cats were unable to keep up during that first half. Savory, Hickey, Will and Jaime Villani, Barling and Odermatt were all praised for their first half work rate. Whilst Bucks suggested the Jets could double the 10 goal lead in the second half, they would not have it all their own way.

Sheen got the scoreboard ticking for the Jets with a goal in the first minute of play. The Cats then took advantage of some 'lazy, undisciplined footy' by the Jets (Buck's words) to slam home four goals in a row, courtesy of Matthews, Chris Goodlet (x2) and Ben Straughair. Odermatt responded for the Jets with a lovely goal from the centre square at the 25 minute mark. Sheen popped through a couple more, followed by Sean Toohey for the Cats to close out the quarter.

Bucks was disappointed that the Jets had got ahead of themselves and started lairising in the third term. Silvan had started to put their head over the ball a lot more, hence them winning the quarter, 5.5 to 4.4.

The final term saw the Jets refocus and run the game out well. Savory goaled at the two minute mark, before a quick reply from Hartman for the Cats. Savory booted his fourth a couple of minutes later. Inaccuracy in front of goal only delayed the onslaught to follow, Sheen booting three more in five minutes in the middle of the term. Tony Ripepi kicked another for the Cats at the 19 minute mark. Sheen kicked his ninth major for the game late in the term, only to have a reply from Justin Cuzzupi. The final margin was 79 points in the Jets favour.

After the game, Bucks was mostly positive about the Jets efforts. Aside from letting their zone game plan drift late in the game, and not reacting quickly enough at times, he was well pleased with the Jets ability to switch back on and close out the fourth quarter well, following an average third term. Hickey, Sheen, Savory, Peter Ferrier, Matthew Baker, Kieran O'Driscoll, Jaime Villani and Steve Burns were all rated highly by Bucks for their efforts.

Baker made a very welcome return to the backline, given the absence of Sverns. Combined with Burns and Jaime Villani, they held the Silvan forwards at bay for much of the game. Odermatt and Knudsen were sensational all game - their work rate is something to be admired. Sheen was awesome up forward, his strength and smarts in front of goal are very entertaining to observe. Savory is playing some of his best football in my opinion, drifting up the ground when needed and claiming his fair share of marks and goals. Dave Want and Hickey continue to impress with their tackling ability too.

Overall, it was an impressive result for the Jets. I believe that if they remain focused for a full four quarters, they'll be very difficult to beat this year. I hope I'm proven correct next week when they host Ferntree Gully, currently second on the ladder. Any lapses could see them exposed by such a strong team. Get along and support the Jets and help them to another victory.

Go Jets!

Comments: The Jets hosted the Eagles last Saturday in a top of the table clash between first vs second on the ladder. In the build up during the week, coach Steve Buckle reminded the squad how much they owed the Eagles following the drubbing the Jets copped in round three last year at Ferntree Gully Reserve, to the tune of 128 points. With no return match to redeem themselves last season, the time had come to atone for their biggest loss from last year.

It was another perfect autumn day for footy at the Hangar, fine, sunny and with a mild northerly favouring the creek end of the ground. A big crowd was on hand as a result of the fine day. Only two changes had been made from the previous round with Dylan Sverns and Luke Broadbent returning from injury, whilst Nathan Parker and Sam Barling were omitted. I heard that some big names in Ben Morris and Danny De Ieso (captain) were returning for the Eagles, so it looked to be a good strength lineup for both sides.

The Jets started the game off quite well with a true rover's style goal to Jono Knudsen just two minutes in. Ryan Pierce returned fire for the Eagles a soon after. James Gould goaled for the Jets as did Kevin Girola for the Eagles to keep things on an even keel. Kevin Clark goaled at the 13 minute mark, followed by two to Darren Sheen to close out the term, giving the Jets a 17 point lead at the first break.

Bucks was pleased as he addressed the squad in the huddle. Despite the fantastic start, he suggested there were a couple of areas that could be improved; stepping back from the mark to avoid smothers by the opposition, and exploiting the Eagles with pace by moving on a bit quicker.

The Jets responded well in the second term. Sheen continued his tally with his third major at the seven minute mark. Anthony Hickey slotted through a great goal from about 45 metres out on the run about five minutes later. Sheen booted his fourth a few minutes later. The Eagles were struggling but did manage a goal at the 23 minute mark via Michael Caligiuri, only to have Jaime Villani respond immediately for the Jets. Morris kicked his first for the game for the Eagles, but thereafter it was all Jets.

David Want managed to get a kick off to Sheen before getting set on the deck with a hip 'n' shoulder. Sheen converted for his fifth major. Three goals in four minutes to close out the term came from Leigh Odermatt, Kevin Clark and Odermatt again, the latter of which was a ripper from 40 metres out in the pocket in front of the cricket nets. That flurry of goals had the Jets in front by 59 points at the major break.

Coach Buckle was rapt at the half time break with the way the Jets stepped it up a cog or two in that second term. He asked that the players remained focused in the second half as he was sure the Eagles would not give up too easily. He was pleased with the way they were sharing around the goal kicking too, something mentioned in the lead up that should be done, just in case Sheen is being held one day. Whilst the whole side was playing exceptionally well, he mentioned Odermatt, Want, Gould, Luke McDermott and Matt Baker as stand outs in that first half.

Unlike the past couple of games, the Jets remained 100% focused on the mission at hand. The third quarter was another eight goal to two demolition job. Knudsen booted his second goal for the game four minutes in. Play was delayed a couple of minutes later following quite a serious accidental clash of heads between Jack Calanan and Matthew Hayn for the Eagles. One left on a stretcher and both went to hospital with concussion as I understand, hopefully they've pulled up ok.

With play resumed, Knudsen struck again with his third major for the game. Eagles captain De Ieso was yellow carded at the 12 minute mark for some indiscretion or other. Robby Savory booted his first soon after. This was followed by more goals to Sheen (x2) and Clark. Pierce joined his captain on the bench courtesy of yet another yellow card at the 23 minute mark, something they could ill afford with two teammates out concussed. Odermatt and Sheen booted another goal each to send the Jets to the last break with a staggering 95 point lead.

During the final huddle, Bucks just asked the Jets players to maintain their focus in the last term and weather the storm of the Eagles playing the man as much as the ball out of frustration.

The boys did just that and more, outscoring the visitors by eight goals to one. The load was shared out as requested with goals coming from Savory, Odermatt, Luke Chaplin, Odermatt again, Sheen, and Clark in that order, before Morris booted his second for the game at the 26 minute mark. The Jets weren't done yet, with Sheen booting his tenth and Odermatt his sixth to close out the match. The only other item of note from the last quarter was a third yellow card for the Eagles, offered to Jess Moore.

The Jets were full of smiles as they left the ground to head to the rooms. Any misgivings from last year's thrashing were replaced with a sense of pride at turning the tables on the Eagles this time around.

Bucks was as stoked as the players. He stated how proud he was with the Jets discipline for the entire game. Results like that do not come along without everyone contributing, however he did single out Odermatt, Kieran O'Driscoll and Want for extra praise.

Aside from those already mentioned by Bucks at the end of the game, I was very impressed with McDermott in the ruck, he seems to be back at full strength following a couple of quieter weeks. Not only did he win many hit outs, his marking and run around the ground was great. Savory continued his good recent form with plenty of strong marks. Clark is looking more ominous every week, his four goals testament to him running himself into form after work commitments disrupted his pre-season. Anthony Hickey and Knudsen were both sensational with their tackling and delivery to the forward line. Matt Baker and Dylan Sverns led a formidable backline too.

And it would be remiss of me not to mention Sheen. Anyone who boots ten deserves a write up. What you may not realise is that he gives off numerous handballs when a teammate is in better position than he is, and that his second and third efforts are as good as anyone's should the opposition manage to spoil a marking contest. Remarkable poise for someone just 22 years old.

Personally, I rate that as one of the best wins I've ever seen at Heathmont, at least for intensity and discipline for the entire game. If you came to see a close match, you'd have left disappointed. If you came to see the Jets flying at full speed, you were in the right place.

Lets hope that form can continue when they travel to Batterham Reserve next Saturday to take on arch rivals, the Basin.

Go Jets!

Comments: Following an astonishing win over Ferntree Gully in round seven, the Jets traveled to Batterham Reserve to take on the Basin last Saturday. The Bears have been seen as one of the big improvers in recent weeks and Jets coach Steve Buckle rated the challenge this game presented as very high during team selection on Thursday night. Only one change was announced for this game, Peter Ferrier out injured, replaced by Sam Anderson following his solid form in recent reserves games.

The last time these two sides met at Batterham in round 17, 2010, the Bears were victorious by 17 points. The earlier game in round 9 that year was worse, with the Jets losing by 66 points at home. We have to look back to round 12, 2008 for the last time the Jets won over the Bears, that day by 82 points. The two sides have shared a very competitive rivalry for some years now, so I was keen to see how things would go in this game.

It was a cool, overcast day with minimal breeze. The ground was a little heavy given the recent rainfall earlier in the week, although not overly muddy. The first quarter started off in a very free flowing manner. Leigh Odermatt struck first with a goal four minutes in, Max Kruger responded in kind soon after for the Bears. Some quick delivery to the forward line saw Darren Sheen boot two in a row - no amount of fat jokes from the Bears captain Daniel Den Braber could disrupt Sheeny's concentration as he kicked straight through the middle. Dave Sindrey goaled immediately after, the third in as many minutes.

Matt Smith and Scott MacKay responded for the Bears with a goal each before Sheeny booted his third at the 17 minute mark. Kevin Clark kicked his first about five minutes later from a set shot, 20 metres out in the pocket. Anthony Hickey chimed in with the Jets seventh goal for the quarter to give them a handy four goal break. The Bears kept coming though with three quick late goals to Brent Gallichio, Rhys Fearn and Gallichio again to reduce the margin to just seven points at the first break.

Coach Steve Buckle addressed the Jets in the huddle. He expressed concern at the lack of discipline shown by them in the last ten minutes of the quarter, allowing the Bears some easy goals. He asked them to retain their focus, not drift too far off their opponents and to go low and hard at the ball.

The second term saw the Jets dominate play for the first half of it at least. Clark, Jono Knudsen, Luke Chaplin and Sheen kicked one major each in the first 12 minutes of play. Glynn Pratt was yellow carded at the six minute mark, sent to the Bears bench for a compulsory rest. The second half of the term saw the Bears goal through Brendan Redwood and Andrew Battye. They could have caught up to the Jets had they not been so inaccurate in front of goal. As it was, the Jets took a narrow lead of just nine points into the major break.

The mood in the rooms was a little down, despite the lead held at the time. Bucks suggested that the Jets were not using the switch often enough, nor running in numbers enough. He highlighted that the Basin midfielders were running well and that they would keep coming. He urged the Jets to keep their heads up and rise to the challenge.

The Bears bolted with a goal to captain Den Braber from the opening bounce clearance, just what they needed - a quick start. Clark and Sheen responded for the Jets with one each. The Bears got on a roll with three in a row from Smith, Gallichio and Michael Callinan, to finally put them in front by three points at the 14 minute mark. The lead swapped several times thereafter with goals to Clark, Gallichio, Sheen and Den Braber. A late goal to Andrew Cultrera put the Bears up by ten points at the last break. The fact that the difference was ten behinds was a concern to me - ten extra scoring shots on the board.

Bucks stated the Jets were in unfamiliar territory, being down on the scoreboard. He mentioned that the Basin were more desperate for the ball and more committed to the contest at the moment. He asked that the Jets keep up the pace and stick to their structures as much as possible in the final term.

Sheen booted his seventh goal for the match with a lovely snap from the pack in the first minute of play. The Bears responded with two quick replies from Gallichio and Smith to keep the pressure up. A tense period of play with strong defence from both sides saw the goal kicking dry up for a while. In fact, it was the 20 minute mark when Hickey booted his second of the game to give a little spark back to the Jets. The home side were not to be denied though, with the final goal coming from Battye to give them a 14 point victory.

Back in the change room after the match, Bucks was disappointed with the loss, as were the players judging by the looks on their faces. Bucks suggested that the Basin simply wanted the ball more than the Jets and that it got them over the line in the end. The Jets had at times been undisciplined in manning up against their opponents, thus giving them too much freedom to attack when their midfield started to hit its stride. On the positive side, the Jets never did give up and ran the game out quite well. He asked that the players learn from the experience and prepare to bounce back next week.

Dylan Sverns, Steve Burns and Kieran O'Driscoll all had solid games across the backline. Steve Shore, Hickey and Knudsen all worked tirelessly, with plenty of solid tackles and shepherds delivered. Clark and Sheen were fantastic up forward too. I thought Sam Anderson played well in his first senior game for the season, winning numerous hit outs and giving Luke McDermott the chance to drift back a bit into a defensive sweeper role at times, something he did quite well too.

Full credit to the Basin - they won on the day with more desperation to do so. For the Jets, hopefully they will learn to never give an inch, and stay focused on the task at hand at all times.

Next week sees the Jets hosting Surrey Park, a side that is struggling to say the least. My motto - never take any side lightly. I hope the Jets rebound strongly for a big win at home.

Go Jets!

Comments: The Jets hosted Surrey Park, a team that is certainly struggling, last Saturday. The Panthers haven't had a senior win since 2008, but according to a recent news article (click here to read it if you're interested) things are looking up for them all the same. The Jets meanwhile were looking to bounce back following their loss to the Basin last week, and also to celebrate the 100th game milestones for David Sindrey and Leigh Odermatt. Additionally, black armbands were worn as a mark of respect to Rex Ablett who unfortunately passed away last Sunday.

The last time the two sides met was in round four last year when Heathmont triumphed by 102 points at home. The Jets had made three changes from last week - Out: Steve Shore, James Gould and Steve Burns due to injury. In: Sam Pezzimenti for his first senior game, Jack Batchelor for just his second senior game, and James Quirk. Weather wise, it was a cool and mostly overcast day, with no rain or breeze to impact on the contest.

The first quarter was all Jets as the boys slammed home ten goals to nil. Following an opening goal to Kevin Clark at the three minute mark, there was a brief pause in goal scoring until Dave Want booted the next at the ten minute mark. Thereafter, the Jets slammed home eight more goals in 12 minutes, all whilst holding the Panthers scoreless. Those goals came from Luke Broadbent, Darren Sheen, Anthony Hickey, Odermatt (x2), then Hickey, Odermatt and Sheen again. The Jets headed to the huddle with a 67 point lead.

Coach Steve Buckle was pleased with the great start to the game. He highlighted how well the handballs backwards to a free teammate were working well, and the backline and midfield were dominating. His only cause for concern was the natural temptation for the forward line to become congested with too many hoping to snag a goal. He asked that the team remain disciplined with their game plan and leave some space for the designated forwards to run into.

Robby Savory got the second quarter underway with a lovely long goal from about 50 metres out and followed up with his second a few minutes later. Sheen booted two in as many minutes soon after, as did Odermatt, followed by yet another two to Sheeny. Batchelor kicked his first ever goal for the seniors, a lovely snap on the run from about 30 metres out whilst being tackled as ball hit boot. His teammates made sure he enjoyed that one by celebrating it with him. Clark kicked his second for the game at the 21 minute mark, followed by Odermatt and Sheen (x2) to close out the first half. The Jets were up by 148 points, the Panthers yet to score.

Bucks addressed the team in the rooms. He reminded the Jets to respect their opponents, but also to show them no mercy as teams have done to the Jets in the past. He praised debutante Pezzimenti for his second and third efforts at each contest, along with Batchelor, Savory and James Quirk for their solid first half efforts too. He was rapt with the discipline showed by all.

The third quarter was more of the same, unfortunately for the Panthers the Jets slammed home another nine unanswered goals. Broadbent booted his second goal for the game to get things rolling, closely followed by Sheeny with two more. Sindrey booted one at the 12 minute mark to further make his mark on his 100th game. Further goals came from Sheen, Clark and Savory. Danny Pullen from the Panthers was Surrey Park was yellow carded at the 22 minute mark, saluting 'the pocket' as they wished him well with his spell on the bench. Odermatt closed out the term with another couple of goals to give the Jets an amazing 204 point margin at the last break.

Despite the mammoth lead, Bucks suggested that the Jets had eased off a little in that third quarter. He decided to mix things up a bit in the last term by sending Will Villani, Odermatt, Clark and Savory to the backline and sending Dylan Sverns, James Quirk, Jono Knudsen and Matt Baker up forward. This was done to test out how the players would cope with change should the need arise in future games.

The changes made did give Surrey Park some respite from the onslaught. Mitch Varcoe finally booted their first goal for the game at the three minute mark. Sheen booted two more around ten minutes in. Ash Grace booted the Panthers second and final goal for the match soon after. Sheen and Odermatt booted one more each to finish on 14 and 9 respectively and close the game out. The Jets won by 219 points.

Following the match, Bucks praised the team for their efforts. He ranked Broadbent, Quirk, Sheen, Pezzimenti and Batchelor amongst the best, along with milestone players Odermatt and Sindrey.

Whilst it was a very lopsided result, it was one that the Jets needed to have all the same. The win sees the Jets return to top of the ladder with a very healthy 67% gap over Glen Waverley. The Basin, Ferntree Gully and Forest Hill fill out the top five, with each team on seven wins and two losses. How's that for an even competition!

For Surrey Park, it was yet another big loss. It would be natural for many a side to depart quickly and try to forget about such a game. The Panthers stuck around for quite a while after the match for a few beers and a chat. We wish them well for the future and thank them for their company after the game.

Following the Queen's Birthday weekend break, the Jets return to H.E. Parker Reserve to host Nunawading. Make sure you're there to cheer them on.

Go Jets!

Comments: The Jets hosted Nunawading last Saturday. For those not up with recent history of Nunawading, following some struggles on and off the field in 2009 in 3rd division, they asked to be dropped to 4th division for 2010 to regroup. This in turn had a flow on effect at Heathmont, something I won't dwell on here.

The Lions last played the Jets in round ten last year at Koonung Reserve, a match that had the Jets romp home to the tune of 124 points. When the Jets last hosted Nunawading, the result was similar, a 92 point win in round two last year. Despite the recent form, it was always going to be interesting to see this match up between first and seventh on the ladder.

Some changes had been made in the Jets line up in the lead up to this match. Peter Forsyth and Steve Shore made a welcome return, replacing Sam Pezzimenti (omitted) and Luke Chaplin, who decided to leave the club to pursue work opportunities in Western Australia.

The weather was fine and mostly sunny at H.E. Parker Reserve, although recent rain and some earlier games had seen the centre area start to look a bit chopped up and the rest of it feeling heavy underfoot.

The game got underway slowly for the Jets. The Lions had quite a few taller players in their side that manned up well against the Jets initially, applying their own pressure and controlling the pace as much as possible. Brett Shalders opened up the goal scoring for the Lions at the six minute mark. Rhys Harrop followed suit seven minutes later. Despite plenty of forward 50 zone entries, the Jets accuracy was questionable with nine behinds for the term. The only goal for the Jets came from David Want at the 19 minute mark.

With scores level, coach Steve Buckle addressed the players in the huddle at the first break. He pointed out how the Lions were controlling the tempo of the game with short kicks. The Jets weren't chasing enough to stop this flow. Robby Savory was leading well along with the other forwards, however the delivery wasn't quick or accurate enough. With only about eight players putting in, it was time for all to get involved with some one percenters and lift!

Shalders booted his second for the Lions six minutes into the second quarter. Kevin Clark replied for the Jets a few minutes later, followed by Leigh Odermatt, Anthony Hickey, and Darren Sheen with one each over the following nine minutes. The rest of the quarter was scrappy, although the Jets managed to deny the Lions any further goal opportunities with some tight defensive work.

The Jets headed to the rooms at half time with a handy 20 point lead. Hickey spoke positively to the players, urging them to keep their heads up and get involved in the second half. Bucks reiterated that, suggesting there was lots of room for improvement. He said that the Jets were still flat footed at times. With increased endeavour and fitness, the Jets should be able to exploit the predictable nature of the Lions game style. He did praise the back line players in Dylan Sverns, Peter Forsyth and Kieran O'Driscoll for a solid first half.

The third quarter saw the Jets assume control and put an unassailable lead together. Levi Horton got the ball rolling with goals at the five and 13 minute marks. Robby Savory snagged his first immediately after, followed by another to Horton. Savory then kicked his second followed by Odermatt, Dave Sindrey and Sheen to close out an eight goal to nothing term and give the Jets a massive 70 point lead.

Bucks praised the team for their third quarter improvement. The hard work had given the team that good feeling back. The forwards had lifted their work rate, chasing hard when needed. Disposals were sharper and confidence was up. Fantastic.

Odermatt booted his third for the match just a minute or two into the final term to further extend the Jets lead. Matthew Whitty responded for the Lions six minutes later. Want booted his second at the 12 minute mark, followed by Odermatt with another couple soon after. Craig Higgins slotted one through for the Lions to close out the term, the Jets winning by 84 points in the end.

Back in the rooms after the match, Bucks praised the team for running out the game so well. The extra training they've been through in recent weeks may not have been fun, but the benefits were evident in the way they played in the second half. Bucks gave out awards to Horton, Odermatt, Want, Jaime Villani, Savory and Sverns later that night, with Sverns declared best on ground. He is certainly playing fantastic footy and it's hard to dispute Bucksy when he says that Dylan is the best full back the division at the moment.

I was very pleased with Levi's efforts, particularly in that third quarter when he booted three goals, and assisted with several others via accurate disposals to teammates or some fierce tackling. His leadership qualities as a former captain shone through. Robby Savory played one of the best games I think I have seen him play, his work rate up forward and then pushing back was sensational, very much like Odermatt. David Want was great along the wings too.

With some worrying signs early, the Jets responded well in the end. I hope they can bring a full four quarter effort with them next week when they take on Kilsyth at Pinks Reserve.

Go Jets!

Comments: The Jets traveled to Pinks Reserve last Saturday for the first time since round 14 in 2008. That day saw the Jets win by 33 points with Dave Sindrey booting six goals for the game. More recently, Kilsyth played the Jets in round four this year at H.E. Parker reserve and were thumped to the tune of 103 points. Word had passed through during the week that the Cougars fancied their chances in this one, despite them having only won three matches for the season to date.

The Jets had made two changes for this match, bringing in Peter Ferrier and Steve Burns, replacing Jono Knudsen (injured) and Jack Batchelor (omitted). Weather wise, it was a cool but fine day, with a reasonable breeze blowing in from the northern end of the ground, a breeze that seemed to really pick up in the second half. The Jets kicked into the breeze in the first quarter.

Kilsyth came out swinging, literally, from the beginning. Travis Gordon was shown a clean pair of heels on the way to a marking contest by Leigh Odermatt at the two minute mark. Once Odermatt had kicked to the forward line, Travis decided to whack Odermatt in the nuts in a premeditated strike, sending him to the deck for a good couple of minutes to catch his breath. It was disgusting, un-sportsmanlike behaviour. The fact that a boundary umpire who saw the incident did nothing but issue a verbal warning that Gordon would be reported if it was repeated was pathetic in my opinion. It should have been reported the first time! Why condone it?

Anyway, the Jets stayed disciplined despite further physical attention from the Cougars. Odermatt booted his first goal of the game at the ten minute mark. Darren Sheen did likewise a minute later from a set shot, despite the now customary barrage of fat jokes shouted at him. I swear, it just makes him concentrate even harder and hence even more accurate in front of goal. Luke Broadbent managed to boot the Jets third goal for the term from 30 metres out, following a sprint through the middle at the 22 minute mark. Most importantly, the defence was holding up strongly, keeping the Cougars to just one point for the term.

Coach Steve Buckle addressed the players in the huddle at quarter time. He said that Kilsyth were head hunting and the Jets were remaining focused. He asked the team to look around when driving the ball into the forward line in case Sheen was not the best option on offer. He also asked them to speak up a bit more and increase the run and carry through the middle. He cited Kevin Clark as one of the best players in the first term.

Despite the Jets were now kicking with the breeze in the second quarter, they were unable to make the most of it due to the scrappy style of game play on offer and some puzzling inaccuracy in front of goal. Sheen booted his second for the game at the four minute mark with a deft rover's style of snap off the deck, out of the pack in the goal square. Nice one. He followed up with another four minutes later following a fantastic pass from Kevin Clark. Robbie Ward kicked the Cougar's first goal at the ten minute mark. The Jets struggled for goals for the rest of the term, despite plenty of opportunity. At least the Cougars were being held in check still.

The Jets headed to the change rooms with a handy 31 point lead at half time. Despite the fact they had won the quarter, he was concerned they were playing dumb footy at times. Whilst having plenty of possession of the footy, the Jets were rushing their disposals, resulting in turnovers. He commended Clark, Odermatt and Luke Broadbent for their efforts in the second quarter. He suggested Kilsyth were out to reduce damage rather than trying to actually win and that the game could go two ways; the Jets could continue as is and grind out a moderate win, or put the foot down, play smarter and come away with a major win. He urged the Jets to play smarter and make the Cougars commit by running at them.

The third quarter had the home side kicking with the now stronger breeze. The scrappy play continued until Kilsyth player Paul Cameron goaled six minutes in. Chris Baker did likewise three minutes later, giving Kilsyth some momentum and confidence. Further goals to Ward and Frazer four minutes later saw Kilsyth get within a point of the Jets. Things were looking a little worrying until Robby Savory got his first goal, closely followed by two more to Sheen to steady the ship at the 21 minute mark.

Bucks was pleased with the response by the Jets in the latter part of the third quarter. He highlighted the importance of centre breaks as Kilsyth had a four to one advantage during their early run. The Jets won the next three clearances and converted each into a goal. He urged the onballers to give 100% and for the rest to run in numbers to maximise clearance opportunities in the fourth quarter.

Finally, the Jets found their mojo and started to really apply scoreboard pressure. Dave Want opened the goal kicking for the Jets with his first at the five minute mark. Savory kicked his second a couple of minutes later. Clark finally booted a much deserved goal at the 12 minute mark, a lovely snap from 40 metres out. Kilsyth's only goal for the term came from Frazer a few minutes later. Sheen responded immediately, closely followed by Hickey and Odermatt.

When Sheen booted his seventh, Cougars captain Justin Minogue decided he'd try strangling him, thus resulting in an immediate free kick and goal number eight to Sheen. A real captain's effort, leading by example there. Just three minutes later, Minogue tried it on again in a marking contest in the pocket, once again, a free kick was awarded to Sheen. Due to the tighter angle, he prepared for a set shot but then hand balled to an unattended Levi Horton just past the goal square, who in turn booted goal number nine for the term. Nice!

The Jets ended up winning by 72 points, a handsome victory given the circumstances. Bucks was pleased that the Jets had won the game by staying focused and not getting sucked into retaliating. Further, he suggested that the Kilsyth coach should be embarrassed for seeing the Cougars play in such an undisciplined manner. One of their players had actually kicked his Jets opponent in the leg, rather than shake hands at the end of the game. How bad is that? Jets Captain Steve Shore also said that it was the dirtiest game of footy he'd ever encountered. Given the amount of games he's played, that speaks volumes.

Best on ground for the Jets was easy to call in my opinion - Kevin Clark played a blinder. His work rate all day was sensational, right across the ground. Odermatt overcame that early low blow to dominate at centre half forward and show his opponent how to go about it. Dave Want was busy along the wings. Travis Ling was instrumental in the last quarter in particular when he was switched into the middle. Sverns and Broadbent starred in the backline too. And of course, Sheeny was grouse up at full forward. His strength in marking contests is matched by a steely resolve when lining up for goal.

In the end, I was very pleased to see the Jets come away with a win. Ultimately though, it was a pretty ordinary day at the footy given the circumstances of how it was played. I hope for a much better day when the Jets play South Belgrave next Saturday.

Go Jets!

Comments: The Jets traveled to South Belgrave last Saturday for the first time since round one in 2010. That game saw Heathmont come away with a 14 point win. The return match at H.E. Parker Reserve had South Belgrave run away comfortable 40 point winners in round 11. The Jets were sitting pretty on top of the ladder in the lead up to this match, whilst South Belgrave had dispatched Forest Hill last week to put the Saints within a game of the top five.

There were two changes for the big game against South Belgrave. Mick Aitken and Jono Knudsen come in for Luke Broadbent (injured) and David Want (personal reasons). The weather was kind in that there was no rain to speak of and plenty of sunshine, however there was quite a breeze coming in from the clubroom end of the ground. Most folk have a gauge for how strong the breeze is in terms of goal advantage. I'd put it at about five goals worth, although it did die down at times and returned in sporadic gusts.

The first quarter got underway with the Saints kicking with the breeze. Lukas Appleby booted the first goal for South Belgrave two minutes in, followed by another to Dave Bilston shortly after. Jono Knudsen roved the packs well in the pocket and snapped truly at the eight minute mark to get the Jets on the board. Ari Shearer added one more for the Saints a few minutes later, followed by a reply by Levi Horton for the Jets. Robby Savory and an opponent clashed heads around this time, both receiving nasty cuts which were duly bandaged up before they could return to the field. Rob Comfort and Shearer kicked a goal each to round out the quarter and give the Saints a 22 point lead at the first break.

Coach Steve Buckle addressed the Jets in the huddle. He asked the players to be aware of some short boundary throw ins. Further, he suggested the players were not switched on or responding quickly enough at times. He urged them to create pressure by running at their opponents, and also to be mindful of the ball dropping short in defence. Now that the Saints would be kicking into the breeze, our defenders were to play in front wherever possible.

The Jets hit back in the second quarter. Following opening goals to Mick Aitken, Knudsen and Darren Sheen in the first eight minutes, Sheen put the Jets three points in front at the 13 minute mark with his second goal. Appleby replied for the Saints soon after, followed by Kim Aboujaber. Leigh Odermatt slotted through the final goal for the term, on the run from about 30 metres out at the 26 minute mark, reducing the deficit to just four points at the major break.

Back in the rooms at half time, Bucks was pleased with the way the Jets got the momentum back and controlled the footy. He praised Savory and Odermatt for their high work rate. However, he expressed concern that whilst the backs were getting plenty of the ball, they were often kicking to smaller players up the ground, rather than taller targets. There were too many players going up for marking contests, leaving nobody down at ground level to rove the spillages. He asked the midfield to lift, particularly around the stoppages.

The third quarter was quite defensive early on. Nick Cox booted his first for the Saints four minutes in, followed by a quick reply by Odermatt. Accuracy was proving a problem for both sides in the gusty conditions. Luke Pride kicked the next goal for the Saints at the 18 minute mark to extend their lead out to about 10 points. At the 23 minute mark, the Saints went on a spree, booting five goals in six minutes courtesy of Aboujaber, Appleby (x2) and Tom Hallinan (x2). They were dominating the centre breaks and getting clearance after clearance during this passage of play.

The Jets headed to the huddle 40 points behind. The breeze in the final term may help, but it certainly wouldn't do all the work for them. Bucks said the boys had a fight on their hands if the were serious about winning the match. He was concerned that some players were hovering over the ball rather than getting down low for a clean pick up. He urged them to work harder.

One noticeable change was to bring Aitken into the ruck for the final term, hoping his extra leap may assist with the tap outs. It did work for most of the hit outs that I saw, but unfortunately wasn't enough on its own to get the Jets over the line. Clint Lantsbery goaled for the Saints at the four minute mark, followed by Brodie O'Loughlin and Cox. Kevin Clark snapped a ripper of a goal at the 14 minute mark, on the run from about 45 metres out. Appleby replied with his fifth at the 18 minute mark to reinforce the Saints lead. The Jets managed three more goals to close out the game courtesy of Anthony Hickey, Kieran O'Driscoll and Clark. The final margin - 37 points.

Following the game, Bucks expressed his disappointment. Rather than berate them, he encouraged the team to discuss the weaknesses in the game and what they can do to improve when placed under pressure next time. He cited Clark, Steve Shore, Hickey, Peter Forsyth and Travis Ling as being amongst the best players for the match.

I thought Hickey was best on ground personally, with Kevin Clark not too far behind. The amount of contests Hickey threw himself into, even late in the game when most are tiring a bit, was phenomenal. Peter Forsyth was solid in defence all day too.

At the end of the day, the Jets played pretty well, but their opponents wanted the win more to improve their chances of playing finals. It did just that for the Saints, moving them into fifth on the ladder, whilst the Jets tumble from first to fourth, despite their healthy percentage.

With some key matches between top teams in the coming round, hopefully the Jets can work their way back up quickly with a win against Silvan this coming weekend.

Go Jets!

Comments: The Jets hosted Silvan for the first time ever last Saturday. Their only previous match up was in round six this year when the Jets beat the Cats by 79 points up at Silvan Reserve. Like any new side to a competition, the Cats are still finding out about the EFL teams and standard of play. They've managed three wins for the season, having beaten Surrey Park by 83 and 53 points, and Canterbury by 53 points also. Whilst the Cats were hoping for win number four, the Jets were just hoping to bounce back following the defeat to South Belgrave the week prior.

The Jets had made four changes for this match, bringing in Dylan Robson-Long for his first senior game with the club, Jack Batchelor, David Want and Darryn Paul. Out from the side were Jaime and Will Villani (personal reasons), Luke McDermott (sick) and Peter Ferrier (omitted). The weather was kind on the day, cool but mostly sunny and importantly dry. The ground at H.E. Parker is starting to get a bit chopped up due to recent heavy rains.

The first quarter had the Jets kicking to the Dandenong Creek end of the ground and was a very low scoring affair with numerous turnovers from both sides. Debutante Dylan Robson-Long made his mark early in the match with plenty of possessions. Dave Want made a welcome return from his week off (we sure missed his pace along the wing last week) when he booted the first goal for the Jets at the seven minute mark of the term with a lovely snap from the pocket in front of the cricket nets. Anthony Hickey followed that up with a long goal on the run from about 45 metres out a few minutes later. Whilst the Cats were able to muster five scoring shots, they were all behinds, some rushed through by Jets defenders.

The Jets had a slender eight point lead as they headed to the huddle to be addressed by coach Steve Buckle. Bucks said that whilst the Jets endeavour was good, their decision making was letting them down across half back and half forward. He asked them to link up better with handballs in a run and carry style of play, draw their opponents to them before disposing of the ball. He praised the backline for their efforts. He also suggested they needed better coverage at stoppages as Silvan were playing a man loose at times.

The second quarter got underway and the Jets made the most of an early centre break, delivering the ball to Sheen for his first goal just one minute in. Scrappy play continued for much of this term too. Want popped up for a second goal at the 14 minute mark, Leigh Odermatt got in on the act five minutes later to bring up the Jets fifth for the game. Sean Toohey finally broke through for the Cats first goal at the 25 minute mark, bringing the Jets lead back to 25 points at the end of the first half.

Bucks was clearly disappointed and concerned with elements of the Jets game when he spoke to them back in the rooms. He said players were not always walking back far enough when kicking over the mark, resulting in poor disposals. Further, there were a couple of occasions where the Jets had stopped chasing an opponent, allowing a comfortable escape. He reiterated the run and carry message and urged the players to be smarter when kicking to the forward line.

The third quarter saw the Jets lift considerably. Sheeny booted a ripper of a goal at the two minute mark. He scooped up the ball delivered by Hickey, turned out toward the boundary line to evade an opponent on the charge, then dobbed it from about 20 metres out on a very acute angle. He followed up with a suitable celebration as only he can, giving high fives to several supporters in the pocket. Andrew Malcolm - if you're reading this, Sheeny is the master of the goal celebration. You were good, but not this good. Sheeny followed up with his third soon after.

Mick Aitken goaled at the 11 minute mark. There was a ten minute gap on goals scored until Travis Ling kicked truly. Aitken and Sheen booted one more each to round out the third term and give the Jets a handsome 65 point lead at the last break.

Bucks was pleased with the improvement in that third term. He praised captain Steve Shore, Darryn Paul and Jack Batchelor for their relentless work rate and attack on the ball. He asked the players to use the switch in play to the other side of the ground more in the last term to try and break the game open further.

The final term started with a bang. Following a centre break clearance and a deft backwards palm of the ball by Sheeny, Odermatt had his second goal of the game in the opening 30 seconds of play. Sheen goaled again five minutes later to further extend the Jets lead. Silvan weren't going down without a fight altogether though, with Adam Newing booting two goals in as many minutes soon after. Sheen booted number six at the 15 minute mark, only to have Newing respond with his third a couple of minutes later. Robby Savory had been playing out of his customary forward position, across the half back line and in the ruck. He managed to find time for a couple of late goals though to close out the game and help the Jets to a 76 point victory.

The post-match address back in the rooms was mostly positive. Bucks said that the Jets had ground that game out and he he wasn't overly happy with it, something the players agreed with. Silvan had won the first 15 minutes of that last quarter, at a time when Bucks had asked for more from the Jets. Both Shore and Hickey reminded the team that lapses can be costly, especially against the stronger sides in the competition. Bucks reminded defenders to stay goal side of their opponents too. He was pleased that everyone had contributed, and reminded the players of the three big games we have coming up. Bucks mentioned Steve Shore, Peter Forsyth, Anthony Hickey, Robby Savory and Dylan Robson-Long as some of the best players for the game in his opinion.

I was very pleased with Dylan Robson-Long too. For his first senior game at the Jets, he looked like he had been with them for months, such was the ease with which he fitted in. He had numerous possessions throughout the game. Some our smaller players had a large impact on the game too, such as Kevin Clark, Levi Horton and Jono Knudsen. Along with Shore and Hickey, they contributed greatly with their tackling. Peter Forsyth and Steve Burns provided plenty of drive out of the back line too.

In summary, it was a reasonably solid performance, one that got the job done. One thing is certain, the Jets will need to lift considerably if they are to beat Ferntree Gully next week. I'm sure they can if they are mentally switched on. I look forward to seeing how they go and hope you will join me to cheer the boys on next week up at Ferntree Gully Reserve.

Go Jets!

Comments: The Jets headed to Ferntree Gully last Saturday for a second vs third on the ladder clash. Despite having a very healthy percentage on the ladder, the loss to South Belgrave had proved costly for the Jets so they were keen to take a win from one of the other finals contenders to push their way back up. Ferntree Gully were obviously out to redeem themselves following their round seven capitulation to the Jets which resulted in a 145 thrashing.

Ferntree Gully Reserve has not been a happy hunting ground for the Jets in recent times. The Eagles trounced the Jets in round three last year to the tune of 128 points. Our last win up there was in round four in 2008, by just four points. The weather was once again kind for winter in Melbourne, a moderate northerly was blowing through from the clubrooms end of the ground, and like the game against South Belgrave, it seemed to pick up a bit in the second half. Whilst mostly overcast, it was dry and the sun managed to break through a bit as well.

The Jets had made four changes from the previous week. In came Jaime Villani, Will Villani, Luke McDermott and Luke Broadbent. Out of the side were Darryn Paul and Jack Batchelor (both omitted), and James Quirk and Anthony Hickey (both injured).

The Eagles kicked with the breeze in the first term and came out strongly. The early part of the quarter had both sides sizing each other up for match ups and defenders working overtime. Ben Lockhart goaled for the Eagles at the seven minute mark, then teammate Phil Muscat did likewise from the centre break clearance a minute later. Ben Rawlings and Ben Morris added a goal a piece for the Eagles, putting them up by about 25 points at the 20 minute mark of the term. David Want had been playing well but retired hurt due to a broken nose at the 14 minute mark, thus depriving the Jets of a bit of pace along the wing. With just a solitary behind scored late in the quarter, things were looking a little worrying at the first break.

Coach Steve Buckle was reasonably pleased that the Jets had had their fair share of controlling the footy in the first quarter. But he was also concerned that the decision making when kicking out from the backline was a bit poor, resulting in turnovers. Whilst the switch from one side to the other to break open the game had been encouraged, the Jets were not executing it well enough. More players running and linking up were needed to make the switch work. He urged the boys to follow instructions and stick to the game plan.

The second quarter saw the mostly scrappy style of play continue. The Jets took a while to get going, finally scoring a much needed goal through Leigh Odermatt at the 14 minute mark. Shaun Jamieson returned fire for the Eagles three minutes later with his first goal. Dave Sindrey dobbed a long goal on the run, shepherded over the goal line by Mick Aitken. Once again, the Eagles had a quick reply, this time from Lockhart with his second. Whilst the Jets were showing signs of improvement by equalling the Eagles in that term, it was alarming that they only had 14 points on the board for a half of footy.

The mood in the rooms at half time was mostly up beat amongst the players as they had started to turn the game around in that quarter. Bucks, whilst pleased with the endeavour shown, was still concerned with several elements of the Jets play. Such as the switch still not working as well as it should, and kicking letting the Jets down. The kicks into the forward line were drifting too high and long, rather than being short, low and sharp to give the likes of Darren Sheen and Mick Aitken the chance to run onto it with a good lead. He did praise both forwards for increasing their efforts in that term. He asked the players to lift in the second half and to remain wary of being goal side of the stoppages to prevent quick clearances by the Eagles.

The breeze strengthened during the third quarter, becoming more consistent. The Eagles started off with a couple of quick goals from Kevin Girola and Lockhart in the first five minutes. Sindrey snapped one from the pocket to bring the deficit back to 31 points at the eight minute mark. As was the case earlier in the match, the Eagles had the answers with quick replies from both Michael Caligiuri and Rawlings. The Jets took control for the rest of that quarter, eventually breaking through with three quick goals in as many minutes to close it out, courtesy of Aitken (x2) and Travis Ling.

The Jets headed to the huddle 28 points behind, not an impossible task given that they would be kicking with the breeze in the final quarter. Bucks was pleased with the improvement but stressed that a consistent effort for the remainder of the match would be needed to see victory come the Jets way.

The final term started promisingly when Levi Horton goaled in the first minute. The Eagles defence lifted and held the Jets at bay for the remainder of the game though. Eagle Josh West was yellow carded and reported for striking Luke McDermott at the eight minute mark. He later accepted a two match suspension at the end of the game, rather than front the tribunal. That wasn't enough to upset the Eagles. A second goal to Muscat a couple of minutes later stifled any momentum the Jets may have mustered. The final goal to Caligiuri at the 19 minute mark put any chance of a comeback out of reach. The Eagles ran out convincing winners by 35 points.

Bucks was far from happy when the boys returned to the change room after the match. Whilst ok to wear a loss if the boys follow instructions and the game plan fails, he was not happy that the instructions were mostly not adhered to, resulting in the loss. He was angry about the lack of discipline shown in one of the biggest games of the season. He was frustrated that the positive mood during the week and even pre-game at the ground was left behind as soon as the boys took the field. He said that they must improve if they are to defeat Forest Hill next week and have any serious chances in the finals should they make it.

The best players according to Bucks included Luke Broadbent and Peter Forsyth who provided heaps of coverage across the backline and drive into the forward line, Luke McDermott who followed up a solid day of ruck work with many tackles, Leigh Odermatt who spent some time on the ball away from his traditional centre half forward position during the third quarter, plus Steve Shore and Kieran O'Driscoll. I'd add Dave Sindrey, Travis Ling and Dylan Sverns into the mix of best players too.

Overall, it was a very disappointing result for the Jets. Despite the win over the Eagles earlier in the season, people have a valid point when questioning how far the Jets will go following this defeat, and those to South Belgrave, the Basin and Glen Waverley.

The boys really need to apply themselves 100% to every game if they are to succeed in season 2011. Hopefully they will start to bounce back with a win over Forest Hill next Saturday at home and take it from there.

Good luck lads.

Go Jets!

Comments: The Jets hosted the Zebras in a crucial match for both sides. Following some recent losses resulting in a tumble to fourth position, the Jets were keen to cement their position in the top five with a win in Will Villani's 100th senior game for the club. The Zebras have likewise had a tumble to sixth and were trying to stay in touch with the top five. The last time these two sides met at H.E. Parker Reserve, the Zebras held on for a one point win as the Jets stormed home in the last quarter. Their most recent match in round three this year saw Darren Sheen boot 10 goals at Forest Hill reserve to help the Jets to a handy 46 point victory.

The Jets had made two changes fort this match, bringing back Anthony Hickey and Darryn Paul to replace Mick Aitken and David Want, both out injured. Once again, the weather was kind. Fine and sunny, no breeze to speak of, ideal. The ground was in reasonable nick considering the recent rain, chopped up a bit in the main traffic areas around the centre and goal squares, but otherwise good.

The Jets kicked to the railway end of the ground in the first quarter. Darren Sheen started on the bench under coach's orders. Robby Savory kicked the Jets first goal two minutes into the match. Luke Harley replied for the Zebras a few minutes later. Levi Horton shepherded a Dave Sindrey goal through at the ten minute mark. Travis Ling and Kevin Clark booted one each at the 20 minute mark, closely followed by Sheeny with his first two, the latter of which was a ripper of a set shot from the boundary in front of the scoreboard. Ash Jones finally booted the Zebras second goal, only to have Anthony Hickey nullify it with a quick reply a minute later, giving the Jets a 32 point lead as they headed to the huddle.

The change in confidence from last week was evident for all to see as coach Steve Buckle addressed the team. Bucks was very pleased with the way the boys were running and linking up, getting down low with head over the ball when needed, and putting on lots of forward pressure. He praised Luke Broadbent and Robby Savory in particular for their efforts in that first term.

The second term saw the Jets at their best, holding the Zebras scoreless due to some great defensive pressure, whilst slamming home six majors. Ling booted his second for the match a few minutes into the term to get the score flowing again. Leigh Odermatt followed that with his first soon after. Sheen booted two in as many minutes, followed by Levi Horton and another to Savory to close out the term. Awesome stuff.

Back in the rooms at half time, Bucks was stoked. He said that the game plan was being followed and was working very well. Peter Forsyth, Kieran O'Driscoll, Sindrey, Steve Shore, Ling, Darryn Paul and Savory all got a mention for good play.

The third quarter had the Jets continuing their dominance of this game. Goals to Clark, Sheen and Savory in the first 13 minutes opened up a 90 point lead. Veteran playing coach for the Zebras, Stuart Wynd, booted his only goal for the game soon after. Sheeny booted two more for the term, bringing his total to seven for the game and 98 for the season. Would he reach the ton?

Bucks spoke to the team at the last break, suggesting that the Jets had basically broke even that quarter after a slower start. He urged the boys to be first at the ball, run the game out, and see they could make it a big day for not only Will Villani in his 100th game, but for Sheeny too with his 100th goal.

Forest Hill goaled first via Max Burton at the four minute mark. Will Villani booted truly a few minutes later. Harley responded quickly with his second for the Zebras, only to have Odermatt respond in kind soon after. An altercation at the 15 minute mark saw Zebras captain Ryan Payne yellow carded and a free awarded to Sheeny. Then the umpire noticed Sheeny was bleeding again from an earlier incident and sent him off under the blood rule too, much to the dismay of those in "the pocket" awaiting his 100th goal. Jono Knudsen took the kick instead as play resumed.

Captain Steve Shore got in on the goal kicking with his first at the 19 minute mark. Sheeny returned to the field quickly to snag no. 99, then two minutes later, no. 100 for the season. A crowd invasion promptly ensued as supporters joined teammates on the field for a brief celebration of this marvelous effort. Sheeny wasn't done yet, booting his tenth for the game to close out the match. The Jets won by 119 points. Wow!

After the game, Bucks was rapt, as were the players. Two individual milestones had been achieved in fine style, but just as importantly, a win to the Jets created a buffer between them and Forest Hill on the ladder, one that will be very difficult to claw back for the Zebras with just three games remaining until finals. Bucks praised all for a fantastic effort in a crunch game.

Sheeny was best on ground for sure. He started the first three quarters on the bench and still managed to boot ten goals and give the team and supporters something to cheer about with his 100th goal of the season. Peter Forsyth and Matthew Baker were awesome across the backline. Forsyth took may strong marks, Baker shut down any chance Wynd had of repeating his 16 goal haul from last week. Savory once again proved how versatile a player he is, presenting well all over the ground and slotting through a few goals when opportunity presented. Hickey's return from injury was superb with many tackles and disposals to the forward line. Sindrey and Will Villani also had solid games.

The up and down fortunes of the Jets continue. I hope they can take the good feeling that comes from a satisfying win like that through with them for the remainder of the season. If they're mentally switched on and give 100%, they can beat anyone.

Let's see how they go against Canterbury next week.

Go Jets!

Comments: The Jets traveled to Canterbury for just the second time to play the Cobras. Last year's round five match there was a pretty dismal day for the Jets with far too many passengers on the team resulting in a 26 point win to the Cobras. The past two occasions the two sides have met at H.E. Parker Reserve have seen the Jets win by 35 and 94 points respectively. Following the solid win against Forest Hill last week and with no change in line up this week, the Jets had every right to enter this game full of confidence. My only concern was whether that would possibly translate into complacency.

The weather was cool, overcast and for the most part fine. There were several minor showers along with a mild breeze through the second half of the game, but nothing that had any real impact on the game itself.

Darren Sheen opened the goal kicking up for the Jets with two majors in the first four minutes of play. Jake Rowe replied for the Cobras a few minutes later. Leigh Odermatt responded for the Jets immediately after courtesy of a quick centre break. Sheen had his third on the board a couple of minutes later and the Jets were looking 'up and about' as Bucks would say. Rowe booted his second goal at the 15 minute mark to keep the Cobras in touch. The Jets then slammed through three more in four minutes courtesy of Odermatt, Anthony Hickey then Odermatt again. Rowe kicked a quick reply for Canterbury, only to have Sheen nullify that effort with his fourth goal just after the siren went to end the term.

With the Jets already up by 34 points, coach Steve Buckle had reason to smile as he addressed the team in the huddle. He was pleased with the great start but asked the team to be smarter with their handballs, and to keep an eye on the zone defence as the midfield was being left too open at times.

The second quarter saw the Jets keep up their momentum. Odermatt snapped truly to keep the scoreboard ticking three minutes in, closely followed by Levi Horton. Clayton Skate kicked his first for the Cobras in reply. Brett Johnson did likewise a few minutes after that. The Jets closed out the quarter with three unanswered goals from Hickey (x2) and Jono Knudsen to give them a 51 point lead at the major break.

Bucks told the players that he thought it was a decent, but not great quarter from the Jets. Canterbury had had too much of the play. The Jets decision making and disposals were failing at times. Continuing the theme of recent weeks, the switch in play from one side of the ground to the other needed to be done 100% or not at all, and the delivery to the forward line needed to be more accurate. These were some of the little things for the Jets to improve upon in the second half. Bucks urged them to concentrate and get back to the level they were at last week against the Zebras.

The third term was more defensive from the Cobras side, restricting the Jets to just three goals. Fortunately they could manage just two themselves. It took 12 minutes for Knudsen to break through with the first goal for the quarter. Rowe and Rohan Walmsley kicked two in a row for the Cobras. Knudsen's third goal was courtesy of a great rove from the pack at the 22 minute mark. Sheeny kicked his fifth for the game to close out the quarter and help extend the Jets lead to 57 points.

Bucks spoke to the team in the huddle, suggesting that whilst there were a few match ups that he had taken a little while to get fixed up in the start of the third quarter, there was a lot of improvement needed from the players also. He called it a dumb, lazy style of footy, one that won't do the Jets any favours against top sides later in the season. He urged them to lift, celebrate their goals and show some passion.

The fourth quarter turned the game on its head, going from ultra defensive to very attacking. Johnson booted his second for the game just two minutes in before an immediate reply by Robby Savory. Johnson booted another followed by two more to Sheeny and one to Dylan Robson-Long. Heath Dent and Walmsley responded for Canterbury, then Horton for Heathmont. Johnson kicked his third for the Cobras, Sheeny followed up with numbers eight and nine for the Jets. Johnson and Torin Knights kicked one each to close out the game. With eight goals a piece in the last quarter, it was entertaining at least. The Jets ran out winners by 59 points.

In the after match address, Bucks said that whilst the Jets had ground out a pretty good win in the end, there was much to improve on. He stated that Canterbury are a a pretty fast side who block hard and work hard for each other. He reminded the Jets to bring their 'A' game every week and to start thinking of how they can improve next week.

Some of the best players according to Bucks included Steve Burns, Hickey, David Sindrey, Darryn Paul, Jaime Villani, Odermatt and Horton. It's hard to disagree with that assessment, they all played very well. I was also impressed with Kieran O'Driscoll and Steve Shore's efforts.

It was certainly a far better showing than last year's effort at that ground, but one that suggested the Jets were just coasting along at times. I hope they can put in a full four quarters against the Eastern Lions next week. Despite the Lions struggling, they love a good scrap and will be well and truly ready for a tough match at Fairpark Reserve.

Good luck Jets!

Comments: The Jets headed to Fairpark Reserve last Saturday to face off against keen rivals, the Eastern Lions. With the Lions sitting seventh on the ladder and the Jets fourth, and given the recent history of tough contests between the two sides, this was shaping up as a good match.

The last time the two sides met at Fairpark Reserve in round 12 last year, the Jets triumphed by 22 points in a very physical encounter (including a melee). The most recent meeting in round five this year saw the return of Mick Aitken with seven goals, and Darren Sheen with six goals, helping Heathmont to a handy 87 point win at H.E. Parker Reserve.

The Jets had announced two changes for the team from last week, bringing in James Quirk and Mick Fraser, replacing Peter Forsyth (injured ) and Dylan Robson-Long (omitted).

The weather was cool, overcast, wet, but not too windy. There were a number of showers that came through during the course of the game. Fortunately we were spared the worst of the deluge that swamped Heathmont itself that afternoon. Whilst this was the wettest game of the year so far, I've seen a lot worse in previous years.

With the first quarter underway, Anthony Hickey got the Jets off to a great start with a goal in the opening seconds of play, following the centre break. Steven Sigismundi responded for the Lions three minutes later. A bit of push and shove between Darren Sheen and his opponent saw Sheeny yellow carded at the eight minute mark.

Whilst the Jets were dominating most of the play, it took until the 19 minute mark for another goal to be registered, this time courtesy of Levi Horton. Will Villani followed up with his first five minutes later. Jayden Murphy replied for the Lions, quickly followed by Sigismundi with his second to keep them in touch. Hickey booted his second goal on the siren to give the Jets a nine point lead at the first break.

Coach Steve Buckle addressed the team in the huddle. He stated that the Jets had had most of the play but the Lions were making the most of every opportunity they had inside their forward 50. He praised Dave Sindrey, Hickey and Mick Fraser for their good starts, and the whole team for their intensity. He urged them to use the centre corridor that was being left open by the Lions.

Hickey started the second quarter off in the same manner as the first, with a quick goal from the opening centre break. Darren Murphy provided a quick reply for the Lions with his first from the next centre break. The Jets then booted three in a row via Leigh Odermatt, Kevin Clark and Sheen, followed by yet another quick reply by Darren Murphy. Sindrey booted his first goal at the 21 minute mark. The Lions responded via Leigh Murphy a couple of minutes later to close out the quarter 18 points behind the Jets.

Bucksy had much to say in the rooms at half time. He believed that the Jets were keeping the Lions in the game with poor accountability by about eight players, and by getting sucked into the contest too readily, rather than leaving a man outside the contest to mop up. The centre corridor was still under utilised in that second term and the Jets were probably using too many handballs for the wet conditions. He urged the team to block, shepherd, link up, talk it up and celebrate goals.

The third quarter was the quietest as far as goal scoring went. At the six minute mark, a rather alarming accidental collision occurred between Robby Savory and Bart Hoggett. Savory was running with the flight of the ball, eyes looking back over shoulder, towards Hogget and Sheen. Sheen avoided the main impact from what I coud tell, but both Hoggett and Savory were left gasping. Whilst Hoggett was escorted from the field by the Lions trainers, Savory recovered from the bump to goal from the resulting kick (he did mark the ball just prior to the collision). Savory became the second Jets player to be yellow carded some five minutes later though, following some heated attention from an opponent.

Odermatt booted his second at the 17 minute mark with a nice 40 metre shot from the pocket. Darren Murphy put his third through at the 20 minute mark for the Lions. Six minutes later, Sindrey kicked a ripper from 35 metres out on the run, copped a decent bump for his troubles, but celebrated in style.

The Jets gathered in the huddle with a 37 point lead under their belts. Bucks praised Savory for his courage and Kieran O'Driscoll for his improvement in that third quarter, along with efforts from Clark, Steve Burns and Luke Broadbent. He said they had weathered the storm well, and also praised the back line for their great efforts in limiting the Lions scoring. He reminded the Jets to use the corridor more and limit those handballs.

The fourth quarter had the Lions fire the opening shot with another goal to Jayden Murphy three minutes in. Thereafter, it was one way traffic with goals to O'Driscoll, Sheen, Odermatt, Clark and Hickey for the Jets. That final run of goals had the Jets finish up convincing 63 point winners.

Following the game, Bucks was pleased with the improvement shown in the second half by the Jets and hopes that the boys can bring that momentum to the next game. He said that Savory had probably turned the game around for the Jets with the courageous example he set. He also rated Darryn Paul, Broadbent, Jaime Villani, Will Villani, Fraser, Burns and Hickey highly for their efforts too.

I certainly had Hickey in mind for best on ground, with four goals and heaps of tackles, he was outstanding. Savory was great too, continuing his solid form of recent weeks. Broadbent is improving week by week, providing plenty of drive out of half back. This is extra important given the absence of Dave Want at the moment, with Luke's pace proving troublesome for his opponents. The Villani's, Clark and Sindrey are playing well too. I also want to mention our two ruck men in Luke McDermott and Sam Anderson. Both are mobile, can compete well with a good leap, but also love to lay a tackle, something that some lanky ruck men are reluctant to do.

Given the wet conditions, I was really pleased with the result. The Lions can never be underestimated (nor should any side ever be in my opinion) as they have given us some grief in recent matches. I agree with Bucks when he says he hopes the Jets enjoy their footy and continue their good form next week.

Best of luck for next Saturday's final home/away game against the Basin. It should be a cracker!

Go Jets!

Comments: The Jets hosted the Basin in the most important match of the home and away season this year for both sides, the winner to claim third spot on the ladder and an a crucial double chance in the finals. The last time the two sides met at H.E. Parker Reserve was in round nine last year, with the Bears prevailing by 66 points over a demoralised Jets outfit. In round eight this year, the Jets were close, but not close enough and lost by just 14 points at Batterham Reserve. WIth a finals double chance on offer combined with Jaime Villani's 100th senior game, I was really looking forward to seeing how the Jets would go.

The Jets had made two changes for the big game, bringing in Peter Forsyth and Dave Want to replace Levi Horton (injured) and Mick Fraser (omitted). Weather wise, it was another perfect day for footy. Whilst it was mostly overcast, there was minimal breeze and importantly, no rain to interfere with the contest.

A huge crowd was on hand at The Hangar as the game kicked off. The back lines from both sides were responsible for many rebounds early on. Darren Sheen broke through for the first goal of the game at the six minute mark. Andrew Battye responded in kind for the Bears four minutes later, followed by their captain, Dan Ben Braber at the 18 minute mark. Sheen got two in a row for the Jets only to have quick replies by Brent Gallichio and Andy Cultrera swing the lead back to the Bears favour at the end of the first quarter.

The Jets headed to the huddle seven points adrift. Coach Steve Buckle remarked that the Basin players were more committed to the contest at the moment, with better numbers at the ball when needed. He mentioned that the Jets back line had improved after a poor first half of that quarter. He urged the team to get their running game going and 'Don't die wondering". One key move for the second quarter was to put Anthony Hickey onto Ben Braber.

The second term was a slow one on the goal kicking side of things, with just three in total. Cultrera nailed his second for the game at the eight minute mark to extend the Bears lead out to two goals. Fourteen minutes had passed before Leigh Odermatt kicked a ripper from a long way out (45 metres?), on the run along the boundary near the scoreboard. Ben Braber pegged that goal back with his second a couple of minutes later.

Bucksy wasn't overly happy as he spoke to the team in the rooms at half time. The only positive he could come up with was that the Jets were only trailing by 11 points, despite playing very ordinary footy by their standards. Marks were being dropped, handballs were missing targets, and disposal by foot was not much better. He urged the boys to stay positive, run and carry, and not to overuse handball.

The third quarter saw the slow scoring tempo pick up a little. Kevin Clark roved the pack beautifully to snap his first goal at the seven minute mark. Robby Savory booted one from outside the arc five minutes later. When Clark followed up soon after with yet another snap shot to claim his second goal, it looked like the momentum may have swung in the Jets favour. The Bears were having none of that as they replied with goals from Gallichio, Marcus MacDonald and Cultrera to restore their lead back to 13 points at the last break.

Bucks looked more at ease as he spoke to the lads in the huddle. He was pleased with the improved effort shown in that quarter. Whilst the Jets had had most of the footy, they were still being let down by slow decision making at times. He asked them to speak up more on the field and hit the last quarter with everything.

Sheeny booted his fourth at the four minute mark right from the goal line, following a 25 metre penalty courtesy of his opponent Matt Smith disputing an umpire's decision. Clark followed through with his third a few minutes later and the Jets were right back in it. Odermatt looked almost laconic as he drifted backwards before booting his second goal at the 11 minute mark. He kicked his third just two minutes later, courtesy of a high tackle related free kick. The Bears fought back with a goal to Cultrera at the 19 minute mark bringing the Bears deficit back to just six points. Batteye's second goal, five minutes later, put the Bears in front by just one point.

The atmosphere was charged, the home crowd hoping the Jets could get back in front with limited time left on the clock. Two minutes later, following some important defensive marks, the ball finally made it's way in Sheeny's direction once more. Despite being dragged backwards and off balance by Smith, he still had one arm free to secure the ball as it bounced off his left shoulder. The crowd roared! I've seen Sheeny take numerous one arm marks like this through the year so I know it was no fluke, however it would be fair to say that none were as important as this one. He converted truly from 20 metres out to give a five point lead back to the Jets. Play resumed from the centre square and the Jets held out the Bears in a tense finish to win this thrilling contest.

The team was led off the field by 100th gamer Jaime Villani - I'm sure he'll remember this milestone fondly. After the boys belted out the club song with great gusto, things finally quietened down so Bucks could wrap up the match with is post game appraisal. A wry smile slowly appeared first, followed by the word "Terrific". He said that any questions people may have had over the Jets ability to fight back and win a close one were now answered. He was pleased that nobody dropped their head when the Bears hit the front again in the last quarter, they just stayed focused and fought on. Whilst he stressed how much of a team effort it was from everyone, he did make special mention of Luke MacDonald's dominance and Kieran O'Driscoll for playing a blinder and keeping his teammates up and about.

I was one of many happy Jets supporters that afternoon. Apart from the demolition job the Jets did on Ferntree Gully, they had struggled to play a full four quarters against other top sides. This was no exception, they just ran it out a lot better and with more ticker. Well done to all.

I rated Sheeny's game as awesome. Whilst he only bagged five goals, he worked his butt of all day despite obvious frustration at the way the ball was coming in most of the time. Odermatt was fantastic too, his last quarter goals couldn't have come at a better time and really provided some lift. Hickey, Clark and Jaime Villani were the best of the smaller players. Dylan Sverns and Peter Forsyth were rock solid in defence, both taking crucial marks late in that last quarter.

What a way to finish the home and away season, in front of a big crowd in thrilling fashion. The Jets did not lose a single game at home this season. I certainly hope they can maintain their enthusiasm and momentum as they go into their first final against Ferntree Gully next Saturday.

Go Jets!

Comments: The Jets traveled to their favourite finals stomping ground at Tormore Reserve, Boronia last Saturday to take on the Eagles in the qualifying final. With the ladder sorted, percentages count for nothing now, it's just down to who wins on the day. The winner of this match will go on to play top of the ladder Glen Waverley Hawks whilst the loser will get a second chance against the winner of the elimination final played on the Sunday. Needless to say, there was plenty at stake in this match.

I'll keep the recent past history between the two brief; round seven saw the Jets smash the Eagles at the hangar by 145 points, round 14 had the Eagles strike back by 35 points at the nest. The Jets named two changes for the game; Levi Horton and James Gould returning, replacing Steve Burns (injured) and James Quirk (omitted). The weather was superb again, plenty of sun and only a mild northerly breeze present.

The first quarter got underway with the Eagles holding most of the play in their forward half of the ground. Their initial efforts at scoring were all wayward. The Jets started to find some rhythm to the match about half way through the quarter, eventually finding Darren Sheen at the 17 minute mark who duly booted the first goal for the Jets. Just prior to this, James Gould suffered a nasty broken ankle during a tackle and left the field as Sheeny was lining up for goal. Some seven minutes later, Sheeny booted his second to give the Jets a nine point lead as they headed to the huddle.

Coach Steve Buckle remarked that the Jets had started very sloppily, all over the place, and were lucky to have a lead at all. He suggested the back line was too slow to respond when the ball flew in, and further, that they were rushing the kick ins instead of holding out for some teammates to present. He urged all to communicate better, run, link and carry.

The second quarter saw the Eagles get their first major soon after the centre clearance, courtesy of Ben Morris. Kevin Clark booted his first at the eight minute mark for the Jets, Sheeny followed through with his second six minutes later. Paul Giannopoulos and Ryan Pierce booted one each for the Eagles to reduce their deficit to just three points at half time.

Bucks addressed the boys back in the change room with mixed feelings. He said that whilst that second quarter wasn't bad and the Jets had shown plenty of endeavour, the Eagles had got away a bit. Poor disposals were hurting the Jets flow; missed kicks and handballs were costly. He urged the team to mix it up a bit when delivering to the forward line, and put the onus on Luke Broadbent to try and stifle Kevin Girola.

The third term started similarly to the second with a quick goal to Morris. Ben Lockhart kicked his first for the Eagles at the 11 minute mark, closely followed by teammate Pierce with his second. Sheen dribbled one along the ground and through for another goal at the 17 minute mark, then followed up with his fourth about six minutes later. This bought the Jets back in range, despite the worrying amount of scoring shots (many wayward) by the Eagles. Pierce booted his third goal right on the siren at three quarter time, extending the Eagles lead to 11 points at the last break.

Bucks said that third term was much like the first, fumbles costing dearly. He asked the team not to be afraid to switch the play, out and around the opposite wing. He urged the onballers to stop the Eagles run through the middle, and for Robby Savory and Leigh Odermatt to give more.

The final term continued the theme of the day with few majors kicked and a number of shots straying offline for behinds, this time for the Jets too. Clark broke through for his second goal of the game with a lovely snap at the ten minute mark. The Eagles were galvanised into action and kicked three in a row thereafter, with Phil Muscat, Lockhart and Morris doing the damage. Sheeny booted his sixth at the 26 minute mark to bring the Jets back within three goals but alas, it was too little, too late, the Eagles won by 16 points.

After the game, the disappointment was clear as the Jets left the oval. Bucks addressed the subdued playing group back in the change room. He said that despite the hard work by many, there were a few on the team not prepared to sacrifice their own style of play for the betterment of the team as a whole. He praised the Eagles defensive zone structure and rued the Jets inconsistency. He mentioned Kieran O'Driscoll, Sheen, Anthony Hickey, Dylan Sverns and Steve Shore as all playing solid games.

Despite being a man down for much of the game following Gould's unfortunate break, the Jets had many opportunities to take the game and win it. There were numerous passages of tough, even footy, typical of the overly defensive nature of this game. Eventually, the Eagles converted a bit better with their extra scoring shots to snatch the win. Full credit to them.

With just two goal kickers for the Jets, it was obvious that Odermatt, Savory and others had been kept relatively quiet. Compare that to the round seven contest when the Jets had nine separate goal kickers and you'll see what I mean.

Next week is a do or die effort for the Jets when they take on South Belgrave at Jubilee Park in Ringwood. I hope they can recapture that mood from earlier in the year and rebound with a win. Anything less than that would be a major disappointment to end the season.

Good luck lads, we're right behind you.

Go Jets!

Comments: The Jets headed to the wide expanses of Jubilee Park in Ringwood to take on South Belgrave in a semi final shoot out. On the line: A spot in the preliminary final vs. an early ticket to Mad Monday. The Saints had won through to this contest as a result of a handy 49 point demolition job over the Basin last week - no easy feat at all. The Jets were in recovery mode following their 16 point loss to Ferntree Gully last week, a game in which they managed just eight goals from two individual goal kickers for the match.

The Jets made two changes for game; Peter Ferrier and Mick Aitken returning, replacing Dylan Sverns and James Gould, both out injured. Whilst both Mick and Peter had played well in recent weeks in the reserves, I admit to being a bit concerned at how they would cover the loss of Sverns given his impact on the season to date. Weather wise, all was good again. Another sunny late winter afternoon with only a moderate southerly occasionally favouring the upper end of the ground.

The Jets started this game off well. Aitken booted truly to open the goal tally up two minutes in. Dave Bilston responded for the Saints soon after, closely followed by their prolific full forward Lukas Appleby. Darren Sheen booted two in a row in reply to put the Jets back in front. Appleby kicked his second at the 16 minute mark. Aitken booted a late one to close out the first quarter with the Jets holding a narrow six point lead.

Coach Steve Buckle addressed the team in the huddle, pleased with their early progress. He was happy that the Jets forwards were not letting South Belgrave return the ball from kick ins easily, the pressure applied created more opportunities for the Jets to score again. He mentioned Steve Shore holding out Appleby, plus Odermatt, Aitken and Sheen as key contributions in the first term. The run, link and carry was working well, especially when the Jets moved the ball on quickly.

The second quarter had the Jets kicking up the hill and kicking on with the game. Jono Knudsen goaled at the four minute mark, only to have Eamon Perry reply for the Saints a minute later. Aitken booted his third, 11 minutes in, Appleby replied in kind with his third soon after. Aitken and Sheen both added one more each before the quarter was done, extending the Jets lead out to 18 points at the major break.

Bucksy was rapt when speaking to the team back in the change room, suggesting the Jets had the Saints on the ropes. The tough week on the training track was proving worthwhile, with the new, tighter, man on man game plan working well, opening up the centre corridor for the Jets to exploit with their pace. He urged the boys to stay with their opponents as much as possible, even to the point of following them to the interchange gate, should they need to, and to remain mentally switched on.

The third quarter opened with a quick goal to Brodie O'Loughlin to keep the Saints in touch. Sheen kicked goals four and five for the arvo to open the lead back up to 24 points. Appleby responded for the Saints at the 16 minute mark, followed by Rob Comfort five minutes later, then Appleby again. The Saints were looking ominous. Leigh Odermatt had been busy from half back to half forward and everywhere in between. He finally goaled at the 24 minute mark. Appleby struck again with his sixth to close out the term; the Jets leading by just nine points. Injuries took their toll with captain Steve Shore leaving the ground late in that term, unavailable for the remainder of the match. Sam Anderson and Dave Want also spent time with the trainers.

Bucks said that the Jets play in that term was gutsy, given the injury toll. He said that the wingers needed to man up a bit more, and that the entire team would need to lift again in order to shake off the Saints. He also said if anyone dropped back to help stifle Appleby, they must make an impact on the contest.

The Jets did indeed lift, kicking four goals in the opening eight minutes of play. Sheeny had three in a row, the second of which followed one of his famous 'lean backwards" contested marks. When Luke Broadbent drilled one from 50 metres out on the run (we're talking a true 50 metres out here, being on a full size ground), the Jets were on a roll and the supporters were sensing a victory in the making. Alex Bakens and Mark Haley kicked one each for the Saints. Sheen responded at the 17 minute mark with goal number nine. Dave Taylor kicked one for the Saints a couple of minutes later. Sheen finished with a late one to bring his tally into double digits, and help the Jets to a marvelous 27 point win.

Following a very enthusiastic rendition of the club song, Bucks spoke quite briefly to players and supporters alike. He said that it was a great effort by the entire team to get over the line. The new game plan had worked, despite some players having to battle on whilst injured. He praised the likes of Shore, Kieran O'Driscoll, Peter Ferrier, Kevin Clark, Anthony Hickey and Mick Aitken.

This was a very memorable game for me. The turn around in fortunes from last week to this was very pleasing indeed. The return of Aitken proved rewarding, especially in the first half when he booted four goals. Peter Ferrier was awesome down back, taking many strong marks. Along with Shore, Peter Forsyth and Matt Baker, he contributed well to help fill the gap left by Dylan's absence. He's seized his opportunity to work back into the senior side and would be hard to drop based on that performance.

Knudsen and Hickey were ferocious with their tackling, whilst Darryn Paul and Dave Sindrey provided plenty of run and carry as Bucksy calls it. And it would be remiss of me not to mention the 'MaSheen' (Sorry folks, I've been waiting all season to use that one, now's the time!) Darren Sheen. He worked hard for many of his goals in this game, and with five in the last quarter alone, was instrumental in lifting the Jets when it mattered most.

Congratulations on the new game plan Bucksy, and well done by the team to pick it up and run with it so well at somewhat short notice.

The Jets now look forward to a rematch against Ferntree Gully at Tormore Reserve in the preliminary final. I hope that any niggling injuries will be offset with a renewed sense of confidence following this great win over the Saints. I look forward to seeing how the Jets go against the Eagles on Sunday. Make sure you're onboard to cheer the Jets on!

Go Jets!

Comments: The Jets returned to Tormore Reserve, Boronia to face the Ferntree Gully Eagles for the second time in this year's finals campaign. Two weeks ago in the qualifying final, the Eagles prevailed over the Jets by 16 points. Earlier meetings between the two teams had the Jets winning by 145 points at home in round seven and the Eagles winning by 35 points in round 14 in the return match at Ferntree Gully. Last week's semi finals saw the Jets win by 27 points over South Belgrave, whilst Glen Waverley dismissed the Eagles by 41 points to book a berth in the grand final.

The stakes were high for this match, the winner goes onto play the Hawks in the grand final and gets to go up to third division for season 2012. There is normally one team promoted and one relegated, but due to the introduction of a senior side from Park Orchards into fourth division next season, two go up this year.

The Jets had made two changes for the game, with Dylan Sverns replacing captain Steve Shore (injured) and Darcy Grasby being a last minute call up for his senior debut, replacing Mick Aitken (injured). The Eagles were also without their captain Danny De Ieso, after he dislocated his elbow last week.

The weather was typical of Melbourne in Spring, overcast, sunny, fine then minor showers, calm, then breezy, although the breeze dissipated as the afternoon wore on.

The first quarter got underway with the Jets kicking against the sporadic breeze towards the clubroom end of the ground. Ben Lockhart struck first with a goal seven minutes in for the Eagles. The Jets cleared from the centre after the ensuing ball up and delivered to Leigh Odermatt for his first a minute later. Michael Topp responded soon after for the Eagles. Odermatt booted his second at the 18 minute mark, closely followed by Darren Sheen with a nice 35 metre goal from the pocket. Sheen nailed his second at the 23 minute mark. Ben Rawlings kicked a late one for the Eagles to close out the quarter, with the Jets holding a nine point lead.

Coach Steve Buckle was pretty pleased with the start made by the Jets as he addressed the team in the huddle. He praised the team for their good running, forward pressure, and playing man on man like last week. He asked that they use the switch more quickly when executing it, and for the ball to be delivered into space in front of the forwards for them to run onto, rather than on top of them. Odermatt and Anthony Hickey were singled out for praise, whilst debutante Grasby was given the unenviable task of tagging Paul Giannopoulos in the second quarter.

Sheen booted his third goal for the game at the four minute mark of Q2, courtesy of a nice pass from Kevin Clark. The Eagles managed to reply with three goals in a row in the space of five minutes via Topp, Ben Morris and Ryan Pierce. Sheeny replied with two more at the 20 minute mark to put the Jets back in front. Lockhart and Rawlings booted one more each to give the lead back to the Eagles, albeit only a narrow margin of three points, at half time.

Bucks was in a "filthy" mood back in the change rooms when he addressed the boys at the major break. He said that the Jets were not committing to manning up properly in that second quarter, resulting in some players turning on each other, and in turn, the Eagles were being kept in it. He reiterated the simple instruction to follow the opponent assigned. When combined with the run and carry style of play, the Jets were looking awesome. Sheen, Sam Anderson and Luke McDermott were praised for their efforts so far.

The Eagles booted the first goal of the third term with a quick one to Peter Cassidy-Marsh. Dave Sindrey replied for the Jets immediately and celebrated in typical Sindrey fashion (don't change Dave, your enthusiasm is awesome!). Pryce Dalgleish booted the Eagles next goal at the nine minute mark. Kevin Clark stepped in with his first a few minutes later to keep the Jets in touch. When Sheeny kicked his sixth a couple of minutes later, the Jets regained the lead by two points. Sheeny's seventh followed soon after, as did debutante Grasby with his first. Whilst there were no more goals for the remaining ten minutes or so of the term, I couldn't help but think that the Eagles may come back once again.

The Jets held a handy 18 point lead at the last break as they assembled in the huddle for another briefing from coach Buckle. He was rapt with the improvement in that third quarter. He praised Grasby for the way he had settled into the game and started having a really positive influence. He urged the team to keep up the pressure and run the game out.

The Jets did just that, in style! Will Villani floated a high kick in from the pocket for a goal in the second minute. Odermatt nailed his third a few minutes later. When Sheeny booted two more in a row, closely followed by Clark, the lead had suddenly blown out to 51 points. Robby Savory snagged one at the 18 minute mark. Grasby followed suit with his second, five minutes later. Jess Moore was the only Eagle to post a major in the fourth quarter, at the 26 minute mark. Grasby kicked his third goal to close out the game, the Jets victorious by 61 points.

Grasby received an impromptu early shower courtesy of some well aimed water bottles as he led the team off the ground. What a debut! Bucks was stoked (as were the supporters and players) as he addressed the team back in the change room. He was proud of the way they applied themselves in the second half and how every one of them committed to the cause. He rated the games of Clark, Darryn Paul, Matt Baker, Odermatt, Savory, Sheen, Will and Jaime Villani, Levi Horton, Grasby, Anthony Hickey and Jono Knudsen as being special, before emphasising how much of a team effort it was.

Whilst only trailing by three points at half time, there were some worrying signs during that break. I am so proud of the way the boys regrouped and played as a proper team in the second half. I may be wrong here, but the last time I can recall a player booting three goals on debut was when Clark played the goal sneak role to perfection some years back. For Grasby to do the same in a preliminary final on debut was special indeed. He had been playing great footy in the reserves in recent weeks so when he was included in the side, I was hoping for more of the same.

Knudsen played one of his better matches in recent times, as did Horton. Hickey continued to show his best and fairest award winning standard of play, carving up the middle at will. Savory dominated the second half with plenty of possessions whilst Luke McDermott played very well in the ruck. Our back line was great too, led by Matt Baker, Luke Broadbent and Dylan Sverns. Darren Sheen proved what a dangerous forward he can be once again with nine goals. Awesome.

The Jets have earned the right to play the Hawks next Sunday for potential premiership glory. I am certain that they have it in them to come away with their fifth senior flag. They will need to be switched on from start to finish, but they can do it. Make sure you're there to cheer them on at Tormore Reserve, Boronia on Sunday.

No white flags!

Live to Win!

Go Jets!

Comments: The Jets took on the Glen Waverley Hawks in the 2011 4th Division Grand Final at Tormore Reserve last Sunday. The Hawks had had the easier path to this match, having had a break in week one, then defeating the Ferntree Gully Eagles in week two to advance straight through and have another week off in the interim. The Jets of course had played all three weeks of finals with a loss to the Eagles, a win over the South Belgrave, then a win over the Eagles.

There's differing theories on whether the two weeks of rest would help or hinder the Hawks. Some say yes as it gives players the chance to recover from a tough season. Others say no as the match conditioning that comes with being bumped and tackled slips away. I've not played the game personally, but reckon retaining the match fitness might slightly win out over having a break, assuming your team is largely injury free.

The Jets had made two changes for this game, bringing in Mick Aitken and captain Steve Shore, replacing Levi Horton and Darcy Grasby, both omitted. Dropping a former captain in Levi must have been one of the toughest calls to make, given his experience and contributions. I was disappointed for both Levi and Darcy, but understand that the coaching panel does what it deems best at the time.

These two teams had only met once in 2011, back in round two when the Hawks won by 13 points at Capital Reserve. Both sides had obviously had great seasons since then to reach the Grand Final. I was quietly confident before leaving for the ground that the Jets could win this one, as I believed the recent man on man match up style of play was working very well. The addition of Aitken to the forward line would provide the Hawks with a second target to mind; trying to contain both Sheen and Aitken could prove to be a tough assignment.

If I was to pick just two words to describe the mood of the players before the game, they would be 'focused' and 'determined'. Motivational posters adorned the walls, including one of a striking silhouette of the late Rex Ablett, a club stalwart who passed away in late May. Following a speech from coach Steven Buckle, it was time to warm up and get moving.

Weather wise, it was typical spring time in Melbourne again. Whilst showers were forecast for the day, they had cleared off before the seniors game commenced. It alternated between sunny and overcast, and there was a substantial wind blowing in from the south, keeping the conditions cool.

The Jets kicked with the aid of that breeze as the game got under way and started very strongly indeed. Darren Sheen opened the goal kicking with his first major in just the second minute of play, followed by another some five minutes later. Mick Aitken got in in the act a few minutes later with his first. When Sheen booted his third a couple of minutes later, the Jets were on a roll. The Hawks fought back, with Simon Grasser kicking a goal at the 16 minute mark, and thereafter, they held the Jets at bay from booting any more.

The Jets held a handy 20 point lead as they headed to the huddle to hear from Bucksy. He was very pleased with their great start. The intensity was high and the boys were hard at the contest. He did suggest that the players were sometimes a little slow in reacting to turnovers. He urged them to keep a close eye on Hawks captain Wayne Magee and also Aaron Riddle. Robby Savory was to start in the backline in the upcoming second quarter too.

The Hawks took advantage of the breeze, with early goals to Brad Matthews and Darren Dewar in the first five minutes. Leigh Odermatt replied with a nice snap shot at the ten minute mark. More intense footy followed with neither side giving an inch. Sheen broke through for his fourth goal at the 21 minute mark with a strong and long kick into the breeze. Riddle responded for the Hawks with his first at the 27 minute mark, only to see that nullified by Sheen with his fifth kicked after the siren to end the first half. Impressively, despite the breeze going against them, the Jets had held pretty much level and led by 17 points at the major break.

Bucks spoke to the players in the change room, and looked very happy doing so. He urged the players to stay manned up next to their opponents in the next quarter, survive the likely early surge from the Hawks, and then to capitalise on the breeze whilst they still had it. He praised the defence for withstanding the onslaught during that second quarter.

Will Villani opened the scoring in the third quarter with an opportunistic snap at the 90 second mark. Danny Gray booted truly for the Hawks a few minutes later. The goals continued to alternate for a bit, with Aitken replying soon after, followed by Matt Carnelly for the Hawks, then Sheen and then Grasser. Hawk Rob Davies was yellow carded at the 19 minute mark following a late collision with David Want after he had marked the ball. Odermatt booted his second goal at the 23 minute mark. To even things up, Robby Savory was also yellow carded at the 25 minute mark (exactly what for, I do not know - disputing an umpire perhaps?).

The Jets headed to the final huddle 22 points ahead. Bucks was still looking happy as he spoke to the players again. He was pleased with the way they held the Hawks in that third term and urged them to get up and go again. Captain Steve Shore was out injured for the last quarter. Jono Knudsen was moved to the wing. Bucks reminded the team to use the far wing as much as possible to minimise the chances of the Hawks getting an easy path through the centre.

The fourth quarter was one that tested the nerve of players and spectators alike. The Hawks came back strongly with the aid of the breeze, booting three goals in the opening seven minutes, courtesy of Magee, Carnelly and Andrew Azzopardi. Sheen replied with his seventh goal at the 13 minute mark to steady the ship for the Jets. The Hawks weren't done yet though; Carnelly kicked his third at the 24 minute mark, followed by Azzopardi a few minutes later. An extra point was kicked to level the scores with only 25 seconds or so left on the clock. It was a draw!

Extra time is played in situations like this - once scores were confirmed by the goal umpires, the players remain kicking to the same end they were aiming for in the fourth quarter, and play for an extra five minutes plus time on. They then switch ends for another five minutes plus time on. There is no opportunity for coaches to address their players either.

It was an epic battle that followed. The Jets were under the pump as the Hawks continued their momentum with the breeze. Some stellar defensive work held them at bay until Grasser booted his third goal around four minutes and 20 seconds into overtime. The Hawks had finally hit the front. A behind was kicked (by Sheen if I recall correctly) to bring the margin back to five points in favour of the Hawks. Aitken marked just prior to the siren blowing to end the first extra time period. Despite having missed a few during the match, he managed to slot through a ripper of a goal after the siren, from around 45 metres out, next to the boundary line, and into a strong breeze. The Jets had a one point lead at the change of ends.

The final five minutes was a tense as the previous, as both teams threw everything they had at every contest. Finally, a breakthrough. Kevin Clark was awarded a free kick (I think for high contact) and booted a goal from 40 metres out, also near the boundary line. This was around the three and a half minute mark. Despite more attacks from the Hawks, the Jets were able to hang on for a thrilling seven point victory. What a game!

The Hawks players looked devastated (who could honestly blame them having come so close) as the Jets players and supporters gathered to celebrate. It was truly an amazing finish. The Jets showed real character to win this one, given the strong comeback by the Hawks.

Sheen was awarded the Frank Bibby medal for best on ground. That said, it was truly a team effort. I didn't seen anyone give less than 100% all day. Everyone had their moments. If I mention my stand outs now, they'll almost certainly change perspective a bit when I finally get to sit down and watch the replay.

The Jets were awesome. They withstood the greatest of physical and mental pressures to prevail in a classic Grand Final. They've done everyone associated with the club proud, from teammates to supporters and sponsors. If Rex were still around, he'd definitely have loved it.

To the Hawks, thanks for being part of such a great game. Whilst the loss will no doubt disappoint for a while, your guys also showed great character and perseverance to fight back into the game. We look forward to meeting you again in third division next season.

Time to wrap this one up. I hope you've enjoyed my match reports this season.

Go Jets!
