Match Reports: Round 6 vs Scoresby

We travelled to Scoresby with intent of playing a competitive game to keep us up there in top spot, but the opposition had other ideas. On another sunny day, with the wind conditions possibly playing a part in the day’s proceedings, the team took the field. Scoring was proving elusive in the first quarter. It was well into the latter half that Kev accepted a handpass from a Regan Davis mark and kicked truly. The pressure being applied by the opposition was causing the team to fumble and miss their targets; they couldn’t get their free flowing run going. A good pack mark in front of goal by Monkey added 6 points to our score. And one of the few highlights was Kev’s running goal from the boundary which bounced the right way for a goal! We had a hard fought 10 point lead at the first break. Scoresby kept up the pressure in the second quarter with most of the play in their half. Scoring again hard to come by. Our defence was holding strong and repelling the forward attacks but we couldn’t get it down to our forward line. They were first to the ball and we were found wanting. Scoresby had kept us goalless in this quarter and took in a 5 point lead at the main break.

After regrouping at half time the boys came out determined to get their match back on track. Colombo was a standout this quarter and played a part in the only two goals we put on the board for that quarter. Scoresby was finding the space and kicking accurately – we weren’t and the points kept mounting. It was a 7 point ball game at the last break in a very low scoring affair. In what was proving to be a bruising affair the boys tried to get into the match in the last but couldn’t stop the run of the opposition. A courageous attempt at a mark in defence by JD unfortunately saw him off for the rest of the quarter – glad to report he’s sore and ok – but didn’t stop Scoresby from adding to the scoreboard and they went on to take the game by 21 points and keep the Jets goalless in the last. It’s a game to put behind us and learn from – no doubt the mindset will be fully focused on what needs to be done from hereon in starting with Boronia next round.

The D.Squad were hoping to make amends for last week’s defeat when they ventured to Scoresby last Saturday. They faced with some strong cross winds as they took to the field on Saturday and our defence was under pressure from the first bounce. The ball was rebounding between backlines with neither team making an impression on the scoreboard. Scoresby appeared to have all the play in the first quarter which saw them go in 8 points at the break. The boys were trying everything in the second quarter and the new look DMac seemed to be everywhere, but Scoresby knew how to play their ground and were utilising the open spaces better, continually attacking their forward line. Scoring was still hard to come by and the highlight of the quarter for us, must have been a running passage of play starting with a mark to Parks on the far wing , to DMac to Davey O and then back to DMac with a mark on the goal line resulting in a goal. The squad was down by 20 points at the main break.

The running football continued in the third but Scoresby were finding their targets, we were struggling to find ours. A long goal by Dylan Robson-Long the highlight of the quarter but the opposition had extended their lead at the last break. We had more of the play in the last and managed to hit the scoreboard through Rivers and Aaron Abbruzzese, but couldn’t bridge the game going down by 45 points – not a good day on the park. To the boys credit they kept trying all day.

UNDER 19's

The U19's had been looking forward to the challenge of playing Scoresby at their home ground as our best test of the season to date, and we welcomed James Bruce for his first game as a Jet.

The first quarter saw several classy passages of play from our younger players as Trey Braione was selfless by hand, Joel Gosbell intercepted then delivered cleanly, and Cam Osborne kicked truly at goal. Captain Lucas Grierson was welcomed back after interleague and Seniors games, and instantly exerted his influence across half back. With 12 to 6 inside 50's we led by 23 points at the first change.

Cam Evans had a great contest all day in the ruck with a taller opponent, but Cam's fierce follow-up efforts in the contests at ground level stood him apart. Jack Lacey hit up Fin Brown, whose strong marking out in front allowed him to kick two majors in the quarter. Wade Van Leeuwen’s attack on the ball was evident all day, Ben Savage’s inside 50 tackling pressure was great, and Connor Van Der Wal had safe hands in defence. The highlight of the quarter, however, was Henry Ballard’s 50 metre chase to desperately touch the ball on the line to save an opposition goal, then an Olympic-standard hurdle over the fence because he was moving so fast! The Jets laid 21 tackles in the first half to lead by 41 points at the long break.

The third quarter saw Brent Honey continuing to mark and rebound from centre half back, and Kyle Delaney stepped up to an unfamiliar role in the back line, and made the most of every contest. Scott Dawson was also beating his opponent consistently, making scoring tough for Scoresby. Ben Irvine sharked many of the centre clearances, and contributed to our 11 to 4 inside 50’s as we “moved forward with more purpose” … quote from our Super-Statistician Michael Kral. We took a 67 point lead into ¾ time.

The wind picked up through the game, and affected accuracy at times, but not for Josh Robertson who slotted his third for the day in the last term. We ran out 69 point winners in a real team performance that the lads should all be proud of. We now look forward to meeting Boronia at the Hanger next week.

Scoresby 4.4-28

Heathmont 14.13-97

Goal Kickers: F. Brown 4, W. Van Leeuwen 3, J. Robertson 3, J. McDonald, B. Irvine, T. Braione, C. Osborne
