Match Reports: Round 7 vs Boronia

SENIORS

The Seniors were out to make amends for their efforts against Scoresby last week, with four changes to the side and they came out firing with a couple of quick goals on the board! Their free flowing game had returned and they were running, hitting targets. Two goals to English and one to Knowles and Colombo saw us take in a 22 point lead at quarter time whilst keeping Boronia goalless. It was a more even quarter in the second but an injury to ruckman Jon Wynn saw him take no further part in the game. The goals were still flowing and were being spread around. Kev with a usual kick off the ground started the run and Jono chipped in for two; one from a set shot at the 50 metre arc and the other evading a few of the opposition from the top of the square, back in after injury. Jarrod Spurrell also kicked truly, and in some frantic play in front of goal Ryan Young managed to kick one through the pack to score. We went in at the main break 34 points in front.

It was Boronia's turn to hit the scoreboard with two quick goals in the opening minutes of the third quarter. The team rallied and their flow on game paid dividends, with Knowles again hitting the scoreboard and then Rourke to give us some breathing space. Colombo was carving up the field from back to forward and rewarded with two goals. Boronia matched goal for goal that quarter and we took in a 35 point lead at the last break. The team raised it a level in the last with their running game making inroads, one of the highlights of the quarter was Sinders run and bounce on the wing and a kick ending up in Kev's hands and he very rarely misses! It was to be a five goal quarter with Rourke, Colombo, English all contributing and a Knowles kick from the pack to seal the game and a 46 point win. The Coach said it was a solid team effort and the best they had played in a while. He was full of praise for the Under 19 players Lucas Grierson and Brent Honey's contribution, and to Ben Abbruzzese and Chris Nayna who took over the ruck duties after Monkey's injury. He thought Colombo's performance was his best so far this season and Knowles was in everything. The win has us still on top of the ladder one game clear of our nearest rivals – one of which we play this Saturday – Ferntree Gully.

RESERVES

There was a big audience for the match Saturday, with the club hosting their President's Lunch, and the local Auskickers and their parents, who were waiting to play their grid game. I will admit that this reporter's attention was more on the function and the speakers, which was making it difficult to watch what was happening on the field. The squad started off well with a goal to Trent Matthews but it was a goal for goal quarter, a snap by Jack Henriks [the first of his three for the day] and a goal to DMac saw us take in a two point lead at quarter time. A game ending injury to Parks decreased our running stocks and the boys seemed to go missing in the second quarter with Boronia taking in a 23 point lead at the main break.

Unfortunately we couldn't make inroads in the next quarter with only one goal and the lead stretched out to 50 points at the last break. The coach called for a big effort in the last and squad did just that and matched the opposition in most areas but it was all too late, with Boronia running out 10 goal winners.  VV made mention of a few of the players, whose efforts were noteworthy for the whole four quarters: Godra who again was amongst the best and worked tirelessly all day, Jack H and his goal contribution, DMac who tried to create opportunities, Fowlie for his ruck work around the ground and special mention to Aaron Abbruzzese who was given a role to do and didn't falter all day! I’m sure the boys will be looking for a better effort next week.

UNDER 19's

Although we have 33 players on the U19 list we only had 23 available to play against Boronia, for a variety of reasons including injury, Senior selection and work. The first five minutes of the game were dominated by the opposition but they did not hit the scoreboard. When the Jets got going it was through centre clearances, creative handball to runners, and great second efforts from Cam Evans and Wade Van Leeuwen. Fin Brown continued his scoreboard impact from recent weeks with two of our five goals in the term as we held a 34 point margin at quarter time.

Jack McDonald led from the front in the second quarter (and throughout the game) with strong attack on the ball. Ryan Burleigh was busy with several shots on goal including a major from outside the arc, Josh Kral owned the far wing, and Henry Ballard was the general in the back line, taking several intercept marks. As we had expected, Boronia were physical and in close at the contest. This created some skill errors and turnovers from the Jets, and the opposition capitalised to win the quarter and narrow the margin to 21 points at the long break.

The wind picked up in the third quarter. Boronia put two spare defenders behind the ball, and the game became an arm wrestle. Despite winning the inside-50 count 12 to 5, we fell into the trap of kicking long with the wind into the forward line, and struggled to hit targets in the congestion. Neither team kicked a goal in the term, and our lead of 24 points was in the balance at three quarter time with the oppo kicking with a strong wind in the last quarter.

Coach Gary Burleigh gave the players a rev and they responded when it counted. Connor Van Der Wal and Kyle Delaney showed great composure in defense, Joel Gosbell read the ball well and was silky by foot, Krally's great chase to create a turnover was uplifting, and when Fin Brown sealed the game with a snap from the netball courts the crowd rose! We responded to the challenge across the day, and although inaccurate at goal, our 26 scoring shots to 8 highlighted that we controlled much of the play.  The Coach was full of praise in the rooms after the game labeling it, "Our best win for the season".
